antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-install Linux live CD distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch for x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 256 MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 256 MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.7 GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue CD, or run "live" on a USB stick, with or without persistent file storage.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I've just tried antiX 17 on a Pentium III Thinkpad. I haven't seen it since version 13 and I was disappointed with how it's changed. Luckily I have enough RAM to be able to use Xubuntu.

It's one of the few distros that will work on a small, old computer (Pentium III and 256MB recommended) and which comes with a non-pae kernel. It also defaults to Debian Stable, rather than Unstable or Testing. If you want a simple system and don't try to do anything fancy, it will be fine.

1. I needed two keyboard drivers. The configuration tool has a bug in the code, and editing the file directly didn't work.
2. I tried to switch from Icewm to Xfce. AntiX is no longer full compatible with Debian, and some software has to be installed in antiX versions. Their version of Xfce only allowed me to log-in as root. I reported this, but no-one could help.
3. The utility to create a bootable usb stick also appears to be broken, as it failed with both Mint and Xubuntu, even when allegedly just acting as a front-end for dd.

I like the philosophy behind antiX. It's really nice that AntiX offers a straight Debian experience that is super minimal, very easy to use, and works well with older machines as well.

Installed it on 3 machines: an EEEPC, a Pentium Desktop and a 4 year old Dell Vostro with i3. All installs were good, except that on the Vostro I seem to have accidentally installed the netbook option, which is more limited and also has a less convenient menu structure. I prefer the JWM-rox configuration, after using Puppy Linux for a long time.* JWM (and the other Windows managers) take a bit of work to configure properly using the text file configuration that comes with AntiX, though in the long run there are advantages with that. Other things, like configuring the PrintScrn key took some time to learn.

After using AntiX for a couple of months, I find the system very stable. I have swapped some of the apps to be more suited to my preferences.

On my Vostro, I also have Lubuntu. The fonts look nicer than those of AntiX, and the Desktop experience is a little smoother. But AntiX boots faster and uses less resources.

* I was till recently using Puppy Linux. Now I keep my machines in sync by using Syncthing. This works very nicely.

This is such a great operating system. I may strongly disagree with anticapitalista's political opinions which are obvious from the names he gives to the releases of this distro as well as his own name. I would give it a 10/10 if they would just leave the political BS out of Linux. Linux should be politics-free!

With LXDE, Compton compositor, Plank dock, Guake terminal, Blueman, xfce4-power-manager AND network-manager, I am idling at roughly 140-150MB of RAM, that's really good! Its about 30-70MB lower than all other distros available for 32-bit. I hope we can encourage the AntiX/MX team to leave politics out of Linux.
