Ultramarine Linux is a Fedora-based distribution featuring extra package repositories such as RPM Fusion, the Budgie (or Cutefish) desktop, and multimedia codecs. Ultramarine can be considered a spiritual successor to Korora Project and aims to make Fedora a more desktop-friendly experience.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.
I was using Fedora 33, 34 and 38 in a recent past and found Fedora already a very good solution. At the beginning of this year, I decided to take a tour of desktop environment solutions on Linux. Because I am also a MacOS user, and a Windows 11 user, I see that the dock/workspaces approach begin to be the standard approach on most OS on the market. Even with standard GNOME 4x, you can tweak the bottom bar to change to a dock. In Ultramarine, the good news is that you can have all the good thing in one installation and you can even pick the right DE that you like. And all is packaged for you in one place. It is not only the DeskTop but also the applications, the menus, the dock, themes ... I read the wiki and github and I found that the main idea is really to make Fedora as easy to install/use as possible. And I think these guys are very close to make Ultramarine one of the best Distro ! Good work. Phil.

Using UM38 for a while now, and I'm overall extremely happy with my choice. UM38 has been a solid distro for me. The main distro I used before Ultramarine was Fedora. Seeing Ultramarine is based on Fedora but has a lot of improvements that I would usually make myself too, it was a no-brainer to swap. The maintainers and community is also incredibly kind and enjoyable to talk to. Whenever I had questions, they've been ready to help me and others, even if they're questions not related to UM. Ultramarine really just works for me, and it saved me a lot of time with initial setup. It's a ready to go out of the box distro with a kind community. I'd recommend Ultramarine to anyone who enjoys Fedora but would like some improvements!

🌊 My Ultramarine Review 🐳
Using Ultramarine as my daily usage distro on my laptop for Development for like a year now, starting with Ultramarine 37. Mostly use JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA & Docker. Ultramarine is a good experience for me personally, and I will stick to it; no more distro hopping! I use the GNOME DE because I prefer it for my workflow and I have always been used to it. Very stable on Ultramarine even though I rice a lot, still no issues! Updates have always gone well. I use a Lenovo IdeaPad 15ITL05 with an Nvidia MX450. I just followed their post-install instructions for Nvidia drivers, and all has been stable since.
Ultramarine comes with some pre-installed settings & apps, they're somewhat opinionated but good for me. For example, it comes with zsh out of the box and starship for their prompt theme. I use zsh myself together with starship too, so I don't mind. If you prefer fish or something else, I guess that could be a slight -? Overall, not a big deal as changing it to something else is low effort, but it's worth pointing out.
When using the GNOME variant of Ultramarine, it also comes with Pop Shell pre-installed and enabled as GNOME Extension. Something that I like because I use the Pop Shell Tiling a lot for my workflow. Using Ultramarine over other distros just saves me a lot of time, so I can get to being productive!
