Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Last Update: 2024-02-02 02:44 UTC

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a Linux distribution developed by Red Hat and targeted toward the commercial market. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is released in server editions for x86, x86_64, Itanium, PowerPC and IBM System z architectures, and desktop editions for x86 and x86_64 processors. All of Red Hat's official support and training and the Red Hat Certification Program centres around the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. Red Hat uses strict trademark rules to restrict free re-distribution of its officially supported versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but still freely provides its source code. Third-party derivatives can be built and redistributed by stripping away non-free components.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Fedora which is RHEL's upstream distro is often hailed as one of the best distros to run on personal computers, but my biggest gripe with fedora is its philosophy to propagate FOSS only software.

There are many applications which aren't available on fedora because of its FOSS only policy. Mongodb comes to my mind to name a few. Overall, RHEL has been a pretty stable, reliable and convenient distro with support to a plethora of applications and i do hope Red Hat strives to keep it that way.

Good job Red Hat.

I have extensive past experience of using CentOS 7 + 8 as a development workstation so when looking for a distro to use on my home laptop RHEL 9 became a contender. I am using the free developers license so I have access to updates from Redhat.

RHEL is perfect for my requirements. A rock solid GNOME desktop not too far behind the upstream. The default repos are light on packages but can be supplemented with EPEL, RPM Fusion, Flathub and (did I mention I was a developer?) the occasional package compiled from source.

Not to everyone's taste but I cannot see why I should not keep using this distro for a good long time.

Update issues caused by simple bugs like curl, ssl, language, decoding error and ASCII character encoding, which were fixed months ago in Fedora but still not fixed in RHEL version 9, have not been fixed despite months of reports of update issues. These errors occur in several languages other than English and are not fixed unless the system language is set to English. This also affects AlmaLinux, CentOS and other RHEL 9 based distributions.
