Oracle Linux

Last Update: 2018-04-18 12:04 UTC

Oracle Linux is an enterprise-class Linux distribution supported by Oracle and built from source packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Some of the special features of Oracle Linux include a custom-build and rigorously-tested Linux kernel called "Oracle Unbreakable Kernel", tight integration with Oracle's hardware and software products including most database applications, and "zero downtime patching" - a feature that enables administrators to update the kernel without a reboot.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This version of the Upstream Enterprise Linux can be a bit of a hard sell for small offices or home users. There is no out of the box support for wireless internet connections. For wireless support, download the appropriate package from CentOS or Scientific (or PUIAS, for that matter). Oracle is superior in function and speed to most UEL distributions. Oracle releases their updates days within those of UEL. CentOS and Scientific take longer and sometimes much longer. I personally don't care about ksplice because I run a small business and a network of four machines.

The oracle repos need to be supplemented with EPEL or the PUIAS computational software to be useful for high performance modeling and scientific stuff. CentOS comes with options for science out of the box. I'm giving it a low score because it's an extra chore to get wireless support and mathematical applications. A very enthusiastic 8!

I have been using Oracle Linux for 2 years as a Desktop and it is very stable system. I recently switched to Cinnamon Desktop Environment and was amazed at the stability of GUI.

if you are going to install oracle database never try any thing else.
if you are looking for real stability never go to any thing else.
this is the solid distro that you can use without doubt .
and after adding epel repository you can find whatever packages you are looking for .
