Korora Project

Last Update: 2018-03-24 02:02 UTC

Korora was born out of a desire to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for experts. The main goal of Korora is to provide a complete, easy-to-use system for general computing. Originally based on Gentoo Linux in 2005, Korora was re-born in 2010 as a Fedora Remix with tweaks and extras to make the system "just work" out of the box.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Korora runs good, its a nice distro and has Fedora under its hood ...runs smooth on my laptop that is a ACER from 2009.... my wifi and graphics were all installed without me doing anything ....big plus over the way Debian does it.

My only complaints and they are petty ones are ....the login screen....I set my desktop to auto login and for whatever reason it still shows a login name and wants me to click on something before it opens to the main screen....dont understand this at all.

My next complaint is screen resolution ...I have MxLINUX 17 on the same pc and when I get on Firefox or Google Chrome the pages are a lot clearer than when I get on them on Korora 26 and I cant figure out why.

Its a good distro runs good and seems to be stable....I read the crew that keep Korora up are not going to release a Korora 27 when Fedora makes its next release instead they are going to release Korora 28....not sure what is going on there but it kinda spooks me wanting to stay with Korora...thought I would let everyone know before they add Korora .....this may be nothing but it got my attention.

I installed Korora 26 with the KDE desktop and it worked pretty well on my HP Laptop. My only issue was when plugging in a TV to the DVI port which causes a known issue to appear. My opinion is the Gnome desktop works well and is more stable than KDE. At this point until they can fix some of the bugs in Plasma I would say to try the Gnome version instead.

I installed Korora 26 on a Dell Latitude E6420 from 2012 with a Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 500Gb HDD.
I was not expecting lightning fast speed, and I did not get it. Korora probably needs a bit more RAM and an SSD drive to run really well.
What I did enjoy is the great KDE setup. After installing 700-odd updates it worked pretty well.
I set up the Desktop wallpapers to run a slideshow, which worked well and looked good, I ran a few programmes, all of which went pretty well too.
On the whole it is a really nice distro, if you have modern hardware. The default installed programmes are pretty good choices also.
If you are new to Linux this would be a good place to start.
