antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-install Linux live CD distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch for x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 256 MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 256 MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.7 GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue CD, or run "live" on a USB stick, with or without persistent file storage.

  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kde-workspace" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

AntiX was unable to offer wifi support for my old HP laptop which uses a Broadcom chip. Other distros offer support and are running very well on that machine (Peppermint, Linux Lite, LXLE, SolydX and Archman).
Oh well......I do have MX Linux running on another laptop and I like it very much.

This distro is quick, nice looking, stable BUT for a left-handed person it's not usable. Tried everything to change my mouse to left-hand. In control you must set right-hand for left-hand to work!?!? And after re-boot it's back to right-hand.

Another problem was with wi-fi, you set it to automatic connect and it ignores you (like when I used windows years ago doing what it wants!).

I've just tried antiX 17 on a Pentium III Thinkpad. I haven't seen it since version 13 and I was disappointed with how it's changed. Luckily I have enough RAM to be able to use Xubuntu.

It's one of the few distros that will work on a small, old computer (Pentium III and 256MB recommended) and which comes with a non-pae kernel. It also defaults to Debian Stable, rather than Unstable or Testing. If you want a simple system and don't try to do anything fancy, it will be fine.

1. I needed two keyboard drivers. The configuration tool has a bug in the code, and editing the file directly didn't work.
2. I tried to switch from Icewm to Xfce. AntiX is no longer full compatible with Debian, and some software has to be installed in antiX versions. Their version of Xfce only allowed me to log-in as root. I reported this, but no-one could help.
3. The utility to create a bootable usb stick also appears to be broken, as it failed with both Mint and Xubuntu, even when allegedly just acting as a front-end for dd.
