antiX

Last Update: 2018-03-24 02:02 UTC

antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-install Linux live CD distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch for x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 256 MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 256 MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.7 GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue CD, or run "live" on a USB stick, with or without persistent file storage.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I'm a computer tech and a long-time Linux fan. People give me old, broken-down computers all the time. I fix them up and give them to charity. So, I frequently work with old gear that most people would throw away. I try to install the best Linux software that will run reliably on each system. I use Linux Mint and Puppy Linux a lot, but, when nothing else will run, antiX is a dream come true. It runs on almost any machine that will POST. The installation medium offers all kinds of optional boot switches to work around the problems you encounter with 10-15 year-old, otherwise worthless machines. The installation is a snap -- way fast, and it gives you a very attractive desktop with a good suite of applications right out of the box. It's Debian-based, so you have all the Debian stability and great package support and management. What a superb product.

P.S., I can only imagine how awesome anitX would be on a modern machine!

The best general-purpose distributions I tried are MX and antix.
1. Run with persistence from USB stick. Persistence is easy to set up from the login scree (F5 + F8); then installed programs and all data 'persist' from boot to boot.
2. Fast: Boot from USB faster than Mint from HDD (to say nothing about Windows).
3. Light on RAM: 500M is used with LIbreOffice and Firefox (2 tabs, one is multimedia0 on 2G RAM almost 15 years old machine.
4. Light on CPU: runs on single core 1.7 Ghz machine.
5. Do not care much about systemd, but prefer simple approch of SySV.
