Antergos

Last Update: 2018-06-11 07:38 UTC

Antergos is a modern, elegant and powerful operating system based on Arch Linux. It started life under the name of Cinnarch, combining the Cinnamon desktop with the Arch Linux distribution, but the project has moved on from its original goals and now offers a choice of several desktops, including GNOME 3 (default), Cinnamon, Razor-qt and Xfce. Antergos also provides its own graphical installation program.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I started my journey with Linux as main productivity OS with Ubutu and Mint. Rolling release distro was kind of experiment after few years with them, but I was surprised how stable, fast and easy to maintain Antergos turned to be - using it for two years now I am sure that I not need anything else. Recently I migrated my OS to new hardware - Ryzen 1800X with Radeon RX550, SSD discs and 32 GB of fast DDR4 and I have now light-fast machine for my work (photography, video and sound editing, and all research/documentation I need for this). I am considering myself as a beginner with only basic knowledge about Linux and this is just enough to operate Antergos with no stress. So far I had just few small issues with some upgrades, but all was easy to solve with my little knowledge and/or support from friendly and helpful community. I am working with KDE Plasma DE, Darktable, GIMP, Kdenelive, LIghtworks, Audacity, Blender and Libre Office mainly and all application are rock solid, reliable and fast with Antergos.

I have an old machine (more than 8 years) and installed Antergos onto it. Must say it got a new life!
Xfce is working very well on it, and the machine doesn't even feel slow.
Everything works so smoothly...

As it is a rolling release, updates may sometimes have issues. But when checking the wiki and forums before updates, no unmanageable problems have ever occurred on any of my several Antergos boxes.

I like the idea that all software, including the kernel and apps, are of the latest breed. Including the latest security updates, unlike most other distros out there.

And I must mention the Antergos forums, people there are extemely friendly and helpful! Remarkable attitude!

Do NOT try this distribution on an older computer.

My experience:

I had to try the install process 4 times. Apparently, a well-known installer bug causes a defective login manager if you choose to install more packages than necessary, making logins impossible and forcing you to reinstall.

I chose the Deepin desktop environment and it was...too much. Too much of a pointy-clicky, vivid bright, over-featured desktop experience to get real work done.

Then came other problems. The package manager refused to install 600+ updates because a single file "already existed" (???). I checked and removed the file manually, only to be told the same by the update manager.

A last flop was the impossibility of configuring a dead-common printer which every device in the network could print in. Never worked, even after re-installing and re-configuring cups a couple of times.

I assume this distro works better on newer computers - but if you were planning to install it on an older one, my advice is - Don't even think of it.
