KaOS is a rolling release, desktop distribution which is independently developed. The project places a strong focus on providing KDE/Qt software, running on the Plasma desktop. The latest snapshot of KaOS, version 2023.09, will likely be the penultimate release shipping with Plasma 5. "It is with great pleasure to present to you the September release of a new stable ISO. As you will note in this release announcement, work in KaOS is really shifting toward Plasma 6. This ISO is still Plasma 5 based and includes all the latest updates, but Plasma 5 & Qt5 are not where upstream development is anymore. Plan is to have this or the November ISO be the last Plasma 5 based stable ISO, after that, it will be Plasma 6 only. Major updates to the base of the system included a move to OpenSSL 3.1.3, fully updated Boost 1.82.0/ICU 73.2 stack, Alsa packages 1.2.10, kernel moved to Linux 6.4.16, Systemd 253.10, Python 3.10.13, Util-Linux 2.39.2, IWD 2.8, OpenEXR 3.2.0, and Libarchive 3.7.2." The Fedora project has announced a new beta release of the Red Hat-sponsored distribution. The new beta snapshot, Fedora 39 Beta, is a relatively minor upgrade with a number of proposals (such as an upgrade for the DNF package manager) not completing in time to make it into this release. However, the GNOME desktop and LibreOffice have received significant updates: "The Fedora Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Fedora Linux 39 Beta, the next step towards our planned Fedora Linux 39 release at the end of October. Fedora Workstation 39 Beta brings us GNOME 45 (itself also in beta). For everyone who needs a free and open source desktop suite, there’s LibreOffice 7.6. Fedora Cloud images for AWS now default to less-expensive gp3 storage volumes. We also have an update to the GNU Toolchain (GCC 13.2, Binutils 2.40, glibc 2.38, gdb 13.2). Of course, developers appreciate that we include the latest tools, but these updates also include improvements to security and performance that will benefit everyone who uses Fedora Linux." NEW • Development Release: Linux Mint 6 Beta "LMDE" |

The Linux Mint team maintains two key branches of its distribution. Mint's main edition is based on Ubuntu while a second branch, Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), is based on Debian 'Stable'. The Linux Mint team has published a new development snapshot of LMDE. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Tips: in the live session, the username is 'mint' and the password is empty (i.e. just press Enter if asked for a password); if your screen resolution is too low, some windows might not fit in the screen; while pressing the ALT key, you can grab any part of a window with the mouse and move it across the screen; to guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 686 non-PAE kernel by default." The project's release announcement and release notes offer additional information. Unlike Mint's main branch which offers three desktop editions, LMDE is available in a single edition featuring the Cinnamon desktop. Fatdog64 Linux is a small, desktop, 64-bit Linux distribution which has its origins in the Puppy Linux family. The project has published version 900 which is based on Linux From Scratch 11.3. The release notes share highlights from Fatdog64 900: "The Fatdog64 team is pleased to announce the first release of Fatdog64 GNU/Linux 900 series. Release 900 is based on LFS (Linux From Scratch) 11.3, replacing the LFS 8.2 used in the 800 series, with packages updated to BLFS (Beyond LFS) of the same version (11.3) or newer. At the time of release there are more than 2400 packages and more will be added as time permits. Changes from Fatodg64 814: new base, updates are too numerous to list; rudimentary HiDPI support; Basesfs/savefile on 9p filesystem (mainly on QEMU); xscreenshot now supports copying to clipboard - press Ctrl-Print to activate; dconf gsettings backend to enable application settings persistence in Evince; touchegg - convert multi-touch gesture to actions; numerous bug fixes and fine tunings. Known issues: suspend/resume does not always work with certain machines; certain Radeon-based machines may require the 'radeon' module to be pre-loaded using 'loadmodules' boot parameter, otherwise the kernel might stall during the boot process, causing unnecessary delays."
