The Zorin project has published an update to Zorin OS. The latest version of the distribution, Zorin OS 18.1, introduces improved Windows application detection which allows for easy access to native Linux alternatives, the distribution provides tiling window improvements, and updates for the desktop panel. "The panel now works seamlessly with right-to-left scripts. That means if you're using Zorin OS in a language like Arabic, Hebrew, or Urdu, your taskbar and panel layout will display right-to-left to match the rest of the system's interface. Some apps might display their own indicator icon in the panel tray, allowing you to view the app's status or quickly access its functions. To let you decide if and how they're displayed, we've added a toggle for 'Tray Icons in the Panel' and settings for them to the Interface section of Zorin Appearance. You might also notice that Zorin OS 18.1 feels a bit faster and smoother. That's because many performance enhancements and bug fixes have been implemented throughout the desktop in this latest release." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Download (SHA256, pkglist): Zorin-OS-18.1-Core-64-bit.iso (3,728MB), Zorin-OS-18.1-Education-64-bit.iso (7,686MB), Zorin-OS-18.1-Lite-64-bit.iso (3,797MB). |

Simon Long has announced the release of a new security update of Raspberry Pi OS, a Debian-based Linux distribution designed for the popular Raspberry Pi single-board computers. The new version, besides bringing the usual range of bug fixes and improvements, also disables the passwordless sudo: "Today we are releasing version 6.2 of Raspberry Pi OS, the second update to the 'Trixie' version we released last year. This update is mostly a round-up of all the small changes and bug fixes we have made over the past few months, but there is one significant change that we’d like to flag up - passwordless sudo is now disabled by default. Given the ever-increasing threat of cybercrime, we continually review the security of Raspberry Pi OS to ensure it is sufficiently robust to withstand potential attacks. This is always a tricky balance, as anything that makes the operating system more secure will invariably inconvenience legitimate users to some extent, so we try to keep such changes to a minimum. This particular security update is one that many users may not even notice, but it will affect some." Continue to the release announcement for further information and screenshots. Rubén Rodríguez has announced the release of Trisquel GNU/Linux 12.0, a major update of the project's "libre" distribution built for home users, small enterprises and educational centers. The new version is based on the long-term supported Ubuntu 24.04: "We are proud to announce the release of Trisquel 12.0 'Ecne'. After extensive work and thorough testing, 'Ecne' is ready for production use. Trisquel 12.0 ships with APT 3.0, enabling us to fully adopt the modern deb822 repository format across all installation paths. The 'netinstall' (for text-based installation and advanced users), Ubiquity (for graphical installation from a live system), as well as Synaptic and other package-management tools have been updated to use the new repository formats. The kernel remains one of our biggest engineering challenges with every release. For 'Ecne', we focused on making our kernel changes more modular, substantially reducing breakage in the udeb components used during installation." See the release announcement for more details. Download (pkglist): trisquel_12.0_amd64.iso (MATE, 3,481MB, SHA256, signature, torrent), trisquel-mini_12.0_amd64.iso (LXDE, 1,898MB, SHA256, signature, torrent), triskel_12.0_amd64.iso (KDE Plasma, 2,725MB, SHA256, signature, torrent), trisquel-sugar_12.0_amd64.iso (Sugar, 1,497MB, SHA256, signature, torrent). The NetBSD project has announced the availability of a new release candidate for the project's upcoming 11.0 release. "The NetBSD project is pleased to announce the third (and probably final) release candidate of the upcoming 11.0 release, please help testing! See the release announcement for details. The netbsd-11 release branch is nearly a year old now, so it is high time the 11.0 release makes it to the front stage. Unfortunately the first release candidate had a few defects that we had to fix, including speed enhancements for the ftp(1) client when downloading large files, an updated tmux(1), reliability fixes for blocklistd(8) and fixes for the Mesa library. See the changes document for details. Please note that various ISO images have been split into small ones for CD/R media and full featured DVD ones. If you are not restricted by the size limits of a CD/R medium, make sure to pick the image with -dvd.iso in the name. If you want to test 11.0 RC3 please check the installation notes for your architecture and download the preferred install image from the CDN or if you are using an ARM based device from the netbsd-11 builds from the bootable ARM images page. If you have any issues with installation or run into issues with the system during use, please contact us on one of the mailing lists or file a problem report." Mandriva Linux
Mandriva Linux was launched in 1998 under the name of Mandrake Linux, with the goal of making Linux easier to use for everyone. At that time, Linux was already well-known as a powerful and stable operating system that demanded strong technical knowledge and extensive use of the command line; MandrakeSoft saw this as an opportunity to integrate the best graphical desktop environments and contribute its own graphical configuration utilities to quickly become famous for setting the standard in Linux ease of use. In February 2005, MandrakeSoft merged with Brazil's Conectiva to form Mandriva S.A., with headquarters in Paris, France. In August 2010 the company suspended the trading of its shares on the Euronext stock exchange. Mandriva SA was formally liquidated in May 2015.
