|
Following two unannounced alpha releases, the first beta of MX Linux 23 has been officially released. It is based on the upcoming Debian 12 and features Xfce 4.18, KDE Plasma 5.27 and Fluxbox 1.3.7. "MX Linux 23 beta 1 is now available for testing. MX Linux 23 is built from Debian 12 'Bookworm' and MX repositories. As in past releases, the MX will default to SysVInit but systemd remains an option for installed systems. As well as a ton of under-the-hood work, here are some items that are new in MX Linux 23 beta 1: the installer now supports swap files as well as swap partitions; the 'regular' auto installation will default to swap files; there are many other installer changes, including GUI adjustments, setting of some debconf values to make legacy grub-pc updates more seamless, various fixes for GRUB install functions and cleanup of 'dump' entries that might be clogging up a user's nvram; there is also additional help guidance right in the installer GUI...." Simon Coter has announced the release of Oracle Linux 9 Update 2, the stable version of Oracle's distribution built from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.2 source code but optionally using a custom-compiled "Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK)": "The latest releases of Oracle Linux enhance the user experience across on-premises, cloud and edge deployments, with a focus on operational consistency and improved efficiency, to accelerate time-to-market for critical infrastructure assets. Oracle Linux now supports offline upgrades. Offline upgrades can help protect a system during upgrades by performing package installations after a reboot and before libraries that might be affected by package updates have loaded. With this enhancement, running services won't be impacted by operating system updates. With offline upgrades, DNF does not apply the updates directly, but it notifies the systemd process that updates need to be applied." The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project has added a few new tools to the distribution in Tails 5.13, including the cURL downloading program which will run over the Tor network by default. Encryption for persistent storage has also been upgraded. "Add curl, a command line tool to download over HTTPS, FTP, and other protocols. curl can be useful for online investigations as an alternative to wget. Everything you do with curl goes through the Tor network. If you want to use curl on a local network, use /usr/bin/curl instead. Use LUKS2 by default for all new Persistent Storage and LUKS encrypted volumes. LUKS2 provide stronger cryptography by default. We will provide a migration plan from LUKS1 to LUKS2 for existing Persistent Storage in Tails 5.14 (early June). Update Tor Browser to 12.0.6."
