Apple-X.net has published a new review of Yellow Dog Linux 4.0: "Overall, I enjoy Yellow Dog very much, but I wish Terra Soft would test their software better. Essentials like X, sound, and the system clock should have worked without my intervention. I can't blame them for not having Airport Extreme drivers. But come on, the system clock? Surely that's a simple thing to fix? I also found that some applications, like XMMS and Mac-On-Linux, were simply broken. Out of the box, XMMS segfaulted, and Mac-On-Linux was lacking a recommended kernel module, plus it gave me a blank screen, with no error messages. I uninstalled XMMS and reinstalled it from the YDL CDs, and still, no luck." Read the complete review here.

An OSNews contributor has been experimenting with the 64-bit Yellow Dog Linux on Apple's new G5 and these are his conclusions: "Yellow Dog Linux for the Apple G5 is quite stable for a beta and it works in SMP mode. It does have problems, which are mostly tied to the video subsystem, and these really need to be resolved before this 64 bit Linux will be a viable working environment. The installer could use an overhaul, especially in the X department, to give Mac owners an easier time configuring their systems." The full story.

OSNews has reviewed Yellow Dog Linux 3.0.1: "Yellow Dog Linux needs some more PPC-specific engineering, bug clean up, optimization and caring, from my point of view. There may be some Apple hardware that runs YDL a bit more effortlessly, but simply porting over Red Hat Linux just doesn't cut it, I require some innovation and differentiation from the OSes I run. I know that the YDL guys are trying hard with limited engineering resources to support all this new Apple hardware that comes out once in a while, but that's not enough to make Mac OS X switchers happy. Mac users are used to the "just works" philosophy and YDL doesn't offer that right now. With fiddling, I am sure you can make this OS do what you need it to do, but I don't see the point of leaving a Unix that runs most of the same apps and just works (Mac OS X) to dual boot with another one that requires fiddling (YDL)." EliteBastards.com reviews Yellow Dog Linux 3.0: "Is this the right thing for you Mac'ers to buy? Well, it depends on what type of user you are. If you're all into the Apple advantage of easier use of your computer, you had better stay away from this, because you might actually have to think. If you are a multi OS freak and you want to do something with that old Mac or new one you bought just for the hell of it, then this would be nice for you. The bottom line of this product is functionality. You get more than you pay for really. I know it helped turn this G3 box into something that can actually be used as a network server or extra web surfing box. If you need something more, then this product is for you. Otherwise, stay in your little boxed up Mac world like Steve Jobs." See the complete review, which includes some impressive screenshots.

One of the members of the LinuxPlanet team has installed Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 on his iBook and describes the experience: "On the Yellow Dog partition, Mozilla flies. Evolution flies too, and is much more comprehensive than the Mail app over on OS X. Mail's junk filter is okay, but when I can shunt my POP mail accounts through spamassassin in Evolution, there's no contest. And, to complete the trinity, Yellow Dog has OpenOffice. OS X has... hmmm... AppleWorks. You can go out and get OpenOffice.org for OS X, and that works pretty well, though I have had some stability problems with it. If you're really flush with cash (or have a spouse that teaches at a local university and can get you Office X for Mac for a cool $15), you can go out and get Microsoft's office suite. But, having used it a few times, I have to say that it's pretty slow, too." The 3-page story starts here.

OSNews has published a review of the newly released Yellow Dog Linux 3.0: "YDL 3.0 is based on Red Hat 8.0, but with many Mac-specific enhancements and updated packages. The "Blue Curve" theme is renamed "Wonderland," but it's the same thing. Mozilla 1.2.1 is included, and it's the smooth-font version. Installation looks like RH 8.0 and is based on the same installer program. The default desktop is KDE, so you have to customize the packages if you want GNOME. And I do suggest using GNOME. The Blue Curve/Wonderland theme looks better under GNOME than KDE: there is something wrong with the gradient on the title bar under KDE. Plus GNOME is much faster to start up." UnixReview reviews the latest version of Yellow Dog Linux: "The true value of the YDL system is in the company's dedication to the project. Bug fixes and security concerns are high priority with workarounds posted for all to see on the support page. Typically, Macs are used as standalone computers in a business environment for specific uses such as graphics and digital rendering of audio and video. The downside of that is you cannot effectively incorporate them in to a business network. Macs talk to other Macs, period. Dual booting between two systems on the same computer is time consuming and tedious. To answer this dilemma, YDL incorporates MOL or Mac on Linux in v2.3. MOL allows you to run Linux with the Mac OS in a terminal window. Now you can have the best of both worlds - the ability to access network shares and create great content."
