WHAX 3.0 has been released: "Finally! WHAX is stable enough to leave the beta stage and go public. Several fixes and additions have been implemented, to name a few: Prism54 firmware finally put in place; wireless scripts functioning, including Kismet autoconfiguration; beta fluxbox menu has been introduced; downgraded to aircrack 2.2b6; updated to Firefox 1.05 due to the recent vulnerabilities; added RSS feeds defaults; added Firefox plugins, Flash; Snort startup scripts fixed. Don't forget, WHAX is easily installed on a USB pen drive, so updating is a breeze!" Here is the full release announcement. Download: whax-3.0-170705.iso (652MB, MD5). WHAX (formerly known as Whoppix) is a SLAX-based Live CD designed for security analysis and penetration testing tasks.

WHAX is a new name of what used to be called Whoppix, a security and penetration testing live CD. While Whoppix was based on KNOPPIX, the new WHAX is now based on SLAX: "WHAX is so longer based on KNOPPIX, but on SLAX, a Slackware live CD. One of the main reasons I decided to try this is due to the wonderful world of modularity which SLAX uses. For us, this modularity means that we can easily customize our version of WHAX, and include whichever modules we like. All the tools have been compiled to 'WHAX Modules' which can be easily added or removed, depending on our needs." The first development release of the new WHAX live CD 3.0 is now available for download and testing from here: whax-3.0-beta1.iso (506MB, MD5). More information can be found on the project's new web site at IWHAX.NET.

The latest version is 2.7.1, which is a minor bug-fix upgrade to version Whoppix 2.7, released earlier this month: "Minor release 2.7.1 is out! Changelog: added Centrino 2100 and 2200 updated drivers; fixed missing 'Autoscan' scanner; added a few tools to the 'Cisco' section, such as nemesis." Visit the distribution's user forums to read the brief release announcement. Download the Whoppix live CD ISO image from here: whoppix271-final.iso (689MB, MD5).

Hikarunix
Hikarunix ["hee-kah-roo-nix"] was a Linux live CD based on Damn Small Linux and dedicated to Go - a popular Asian strategy game. It was known as Baduk in Korea and Wei Qi in China where the game started somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago. Today it was played in nearly every country in the world and has even been played in space. This CD was designed especially for Go players of all levels. Whether you've been playing for decades or have never heard of the game until now, this CD was for you. Any machine that can boot to CD can boot to Hikarunix instead of the computer's regular operating system. Since it boots entirely in RAM and only borrows the peripherals, Hikarunix doesn't touch the host machine at all.
