MINIX
MINIX was a UNIX-like computer operating system based on a microkernel architecture. It was extremely small, with the part that runs in kernel mode in about 5,000 lines of source code, while the parts that run in user mode are divided into small, insulated modules which enhance system reliability. Originally designed as an educational tool, the latest versions of MINIX are also targetted at embedded systems and low-power laptops. By the project's own admission, MINIX was work in progress and was nowhere near as mature as BSD or Linux. It was released under a BSD-type licence.

Ultimate Edition developer "TheeMahn" has announced a release of a new build of Ultimate Edition. Version 5.5, featuring the KDE Plasma 5.9.5 desktop, is based on Kubuntu 17.04, which is a distribution supported for nine months only (until January 2018). From the release notes: "Ultimate Edition 5.5 was built from the Ubuntu 17.04 'Zesty Zapus' tree, using a combination of Tmosb (TheeMahn's Operating System Builder) and work by hand. Tmosb is also included in this release (1.9.9), allowing you to do the same; it can build more then 3,000 operating systems. This release is NOT a long-term supported (LTS) release; it was built in anticipation of the Ryzen build, same as Ultimate Edition 5.4, both rock on an AMD Ryzen. I can almost promise your days of waiting for a releases are gone minus LTS. Polishing releases takes time and I do not care how fast your computer is. I will only invest so much time on a non-LTS. Does not mean it will not rock out on Intel; however, deliberate support has been added for Ryzen. I am going to let this release become what it will be and what it is a non-LTS. Enjoy!" Ultimate Edition developer "TheeMahn" has announced the release of Ultimate Edition 5.4, the latest version of the project's Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution. This build is based on the just-released Ubuntu 17.04 and includes, for the first time, the Budgie desktop: "Ultimate Edition 5.4 was built from the Ubuntu 17.04 'Zesty Zapus' tree using a combination of Tmosb (TheeMahn's Operating System Builder) and work by hand. Tmosb is also included in this release (1.9.8), allowing you to do the same. It has the capabilities to build over 3,000 operating systems. This release is not a long-term supported (LTS) release. Currently I have only built the tip of the iceberg. I have finished building Ultimate Edition 5.4 and can build 5.5 based on Zesty (17.04). Our beta testers asked for inclusion of Budgie and I have made it so. I try and listen to my people. This release has the Budgie desktop; however it is not set as default. Version 5.1 is still based on Ubuntu 16.04, but it comes with the KDE Plasma desktop and, as usual, plenty of customisations and eye candy: "Ultimate Edition 5.1 was built from the Ubuntu 16.04 'Xenial Xerus' tree using a combination of Tmosb (TheeMahn's Operating System Builder) and work by hand. Tmosb is also included in this release (1.9.7), allowing you to do the same. Tmosb 1.9.8 has also been uploaded allowing you to build up to Zesty over 3,000 operating systems. Ultimate Edition is a distribution based on Ubuntu which strives to provide an easy-to-use desktop operating system. The project has announced the launch of Ultimate Edition 5.0 LTS which is based on Ubuntu 16.04. The new release is currently available in a MATE 64-bit edition, though other desktop flavours and 32-bit builds are planned. "What is Ultimate Edition 5.0? Ultimate Edition 5.0 was built from the Ubuntu 16.04 'Xenial Xerus' tree using a combination of Tmosb (TheeMahn's operating system builder), almost completely re-written. Tmosb is also included in this release, allowing you to do the same. This release is a long-term supported (LTS) release, supported until the year 2019. This release is most certainly worthy of the Ultimate Edition title. Currently I have only built the tip of the iceberg, starting with a 64-bit 'Lite' based on MATE 1.14.1. I have full intentions of building a 32-bit of the same, a full variant based on GNOME, a Gamers edition, perhaps another Lite variant based off Xfce and, time permitting, a Developer's edition." TheeMahn", the developer of the Ubuntu-based Ultimate Edition distribution, has once again produced a special "Gamers" edition of the product. This is a 4GB live DVD with a nice collection of games, as well as the XBMC (now called Kodi) media centre software, PlayOnLinux and the Steam client: "It is the ultimate entertainment system. It has a list of games that just scrolls by on the screen even on a 4K monitor. It does not stop there - XBMC has been pre-injected and set up into the system with over a million channels and streams to cut the cable TV bill on 69 networks, and the ability to add more. Compiz is back and rocking right off the live disk. Productivity? The entire LibreOffice suite is also included. Ultimate Edition Lite was built off Lubuntu; it is intended to be run on low-resource computers, such as netbooks. Ultimate Edition Lite contains only the bare minimum, a browser, a music player and a few other tools. The desktop environment is LXDE / Openbox which has a look similar to Windows XP. This release, being as large as it was to begin with, did not leave me much to work with to keep its CD size. Glenn Cady has released a special "Gamers" variant of Ultimate Edition 2.6, an Ubuntu-based live DVD with a large number of ready-to-play games: "Ultimate Edition Gamers has been around for some time; however, this is the first time a page has been written for it. Our latest release 2.6 was built by Benjamin Breeg; he intends to make a PS/3 Ultimate Edition. Ultimate Edition Gamers is built off Ultimate Edition 2.6 with all updates pre-installed and a few games also pre-installed for your convenience: Urban Terror and extra maps, Aisleriot Solitaire, Atomic Tanks, Battle for Wesnoth, Boswars, Chromium B.S.U., Gbrainy, Glest, Gridwars, Mahjongg, Mines, Neverball, Play on Linux, Quadrapassel, Scorched 3D, Suduko, Warzone 2100." Ultimate Edition is an Ubuntu-based live and installation DVD with hundreds of extra packages, pre-configured media codecs and custom artwork. Version 2.6, based on Ubuntu 10.04, was released today. From the release announcement: "Ultimate Edition 2.6 is fast and lacks no feature. Wireless was my number 1 concern, it works out of the box. I have embedded many features I am certain you will be glad to have. I will be honest in informing you that some of you ATI users will be capable of firing up Compiz Fusion (all GPUs will be supported in the same aspect in the future). I have introduced Cheese for you webcam users. Cinelerra, K3d and Kdenlive are just a few new tools in this release. We have put GIMP back in as well. There are tools that go well beyond the call of duty. I will not tell you what Ultimate Edition 2.6 has in store for you. Take it for a spin you won't be sorry." Glenn Cady has announced the release of Ultimate Edition 2.5, an Ubuntu-based live DVD in over 3 gigabytes - with GNOME, KDE, Xfce and thousands of applications: "Ultimate Edition 2.5 was built off Ultimate Edition 2.4 (Ubuntu 9.10 based), all upgrades pre-installed as of current. It has KDE, Xfce and GNOME, user-selectable at login, three new themes and tons of applications. This release is huge, obviously bigger then Ultimate Edition 2.4. I am not going to spend my time writing a web page, just a post, even though it is a very worthy release and deserves a web page. I have a lot on my plate in programming and other activities. Glenn Cady has announced the release of Ultimate Edition 2.4, an Ubuntu-based live DVD with media codecs, eye candy and -- the kitchen sink: "It has been out for about a week, but I have had a lot happening in the meantime. A burnt power supply, a smoked 1 TB drive, painted a house and caught the flu. Ultimate Edition 2.4 was built off Ubuntu 9.10, all upgrades pre-installed as of current. This release is the largest release to date and is absolutely loaded with excellent tools, many new to Ultimate Edition. This distro is lightning quick on boot-up. I must apologize, the usplash does flicker on the screen when live; once installed it works as expected. I am not going to make a huge deal out of this, but it certainly is a nice toy. Especially for you gamers out there. Ultimate Edition 2.3 'Gamers' has the following games pre-installed: 3D chess, Airstrike, Aisleriot Solitaire, Barrage, Blackjack, Boswars, Brutal Chess, BzFlag, Chess, Dream Chess, Five or more, Foo Billiard, Four-in-a-row, Freecell, Gbrainy, Glest, Gnometris, Gridwars, Hearts, Lango, Kslotski.... Play on Linux is included in this distro, which allows playing of Windows games in a nearly seamless manner. Ultimate Edition 2.0 is built based on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, it is loaded to the hilt with themes, wallpapers, icon sets, GDM login screens, and usplashes. If you have a 64-bit processor I highly recommend the 64-bit edition. This release has all the goodies you have come to love with previous editions pre-added and a few new ones. Ultimate Edition 1.8, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring a variety of user-friendly enhancements, has been released: "Ultimate Edition 1.8 is built based on Ubuntu Hardy Heron; unlike the previous builds, which were created by a tool called 'reconstructor', I built this one by hand. I am releasing both a 32-bit and a 64-bit edition. Hotrod is a fitting name for it, if you have a 64-bit processor I highly recommend the 64-bit edition. This release was built from scratch using Ubuntu 'Hardy Heron' LTS with all the goodies you have came to love with previous editions and a few new ones.
