Bayanihan Linux
Bayanihan Linux was a complete open source-based desktop solution for office and school use. It was a package that includes an operating system, a word processor, spreadsheet program, presentation software, email facility, an internet browser, and a graphics editor. This complete system was packaged in a single easy-to-install CD. The word "Bayanihan" relates to a Filipino tradition where people in a community help their neighbour in physically moving their house to a different place. The most recent versions of Bayanihan Linux are based on Debian GNU/Linux; previous releases (3.1 and earlier) were based on Fedora Core and Red Hat Linux.

The UBports team have published a new update for their mobile operating system. The new release, version 20.04 OTA-6, is a relatively conservative update as the developers are working to polish features rather than introduce big changes. "Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-6 contains only a minimal number of changes due to our current focus on Ubuntu base OS upgrade. That said, we still have a few interesting changes: Some support for newer generations of Android HAL (hardware abstraction layer) has been added. This aims to make Ubuntu Touch support newer devices such as Fairphone 5 and the upcoming Volla Phone Quintus better, however this does not imply complete support for those devices just yet. Wireless Display see improved stability on some devices. (Credit goes to Azkali from Volla) General bug fixes and security updates." The UBports team have announced a new update to the project's 20.04 series for mobile devices. The new update, 20.04 OTA-4 adjusts notification behaviour, makes it possible to assign each contact their own ringtone, and makes it easier to switch themes. "Ubuntu Touch is the privacy and freedom-respecting mobile operating system by UBports. Today we are happy to announce the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-4, our 4th stable update to the new Ubuntu 20.04 LTS based system. This release of Ubuntu Touch is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, so latest Ubuntu 20.04 LTS security updates have landed in this OTA. ... We have always had a system-wide dark mode in the system. However, in the past, you had to use a third-party app to access the necessary switch. In this OTA, we've added a new toggle switch in the System Settings to allow you to change it without the need of an additional app. To access it, go to System Settings > Background & Appearance. For now, it will affect applications only, and not the other system components (such as notifications). Also, you'll have to restart the applications for the change to take effect. The UBports project develops an Ubuntu-based, mobile operating system. The project has continued the work on its 20.04 branch and introduced improved support for PINE64 devices. "OTA-3 is the first Ubuntu Touch based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS that will become available for the PinePhone, the PinePhone Pro and also the PineTab and PineTab 2. We consider 20.04 OTA-3's state of the PinePhone adaptation a beta release. For now you still need to flash the Pine{Phone,Phone Pro,Tab,Tab2} upstream images as usual. Please test and give feedback to our developers. UBports have announced a new update to the project's mobile operating system. This release, UBports 20.04 OTA-2, introduces support for three new devices: Fairphone 3, Vollaphone X23, and F(x)tec Pro1 X. There are also a number of new features and bug fixes: "The System Settings app has seen multiple improvements: The layout of a few pages (e.g. Sound) have been adjusted to be more consistent. There are more like this to come in the future, so stay tuned. You can now delete your custom background images you've added, in case you don't want to have that background image anymore. You can now adjust the sensitivity of the edge gestures in Lomiri. If you install a case or a bumper on your device, you can now increase the width of the edge area so that it's easier for you. Or maybe you find it too sensitive, now you also can reduce it. The new settings can be found in System Settings > Gestures. Currently only visible though on a device that supports double tap to wake. You can now use the physical camera button to shoot the photo. UBports is a Linux distribution designed to run on phones and tablets. The project is a community-run continuation of Ubuntu Touch. The project has published a major update which upgrades the base distribution from Ubuntu 16.04 to 20.04. "Ubuntu Touch is the privacy and freedom-respecting mobile operating system by UBports. Today we are extremely happy to announce the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-1 Focal, the very latest update to the system! OTA-1 is will be available on the following supported Ubuntu Touch devices: Fairphone 4, Google Pixel 3a, Vollaphone 22, Vollaphone X, Vollaphone. Other UT devices that currently run Focal might not have all features working yet with OTA-1 depending on the exact status of their port, but you are free to try if you wish. UBports is a community project which develops a GNU/Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project's latest update is UBports 16.04 OTA-24 which introduces a number of improvements, particularly with handling text messages and fingerprint unlocking. The new release offers improved video decoding, better MMS message handling, and fixes a problem where known wi-fi passwords would sometimes be prompted for again. "Initial support for FM radios (@mardytardi): If you own any of those devices: BQ E4.5, BQ E5, Xiaomi Note 7 Pro - you are lucky: Connect your headphones, download the FM Radio App and enjoy the show. The new release improves the first-run greeter and adjusts the way used storage space is calculated. "The storage statistics (free / occupied space) in the system settings got an overhaul, more categories are being shown, and the calculation of space occupied by the system partition layout and Ubuntu Touch core files has been made more precise. Greeter redesign: Most notably the style of the Greeter (the thing that is shown when the screen is about to be unlocked) has improved significantly to give a more modern and slick appearance. UBports is a community-developed fork of Canonical's Ubuntu Touch operating system for mobile devices. The project's latest release is UBports 16.04 OTA-20. The new release includes several changes to notifications. "We implemented notification LED support for devices with Halium 9 base. If your device is still not blinking, keep in mind that many recent devices do not have a notification LED anymore: Vollaphone and Pixel 3a cannot blink physically for example. Also vibration works now for incoming notifications on those devices. We added support for Khmer and Bengali fonts to support users from these locales a bit better. It is now possible to define a custom notification sound. Like with ringtones one can now select any accessible audio file to be played when a new notification arrives. Let's annoy our co-workers with style! A few new devices were added to the range of installable devices again: Xiaomi Redmi 9 and 9 Prime (lancelot), Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 (merlin), Note 9 Pro (joyuese), Note 9 Pro Max (excalibur), Note 9S (curtana), Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro (gram) and Pixel 2 (walleye). The UBports team has announced a new version of the project's mobile operating system. The project, which continues the work of Ubuntu Touch, has published a new update: UBports 16.04 OTA-19. This release fixes a number of small issues and annoyances which occurred when messaging and connecting to wireless networks. "As we went for the messaging app´s auto-popup of the keyboard we also fixed a few other annoyances around the messaging app and it´s keyboard handling, which would in fact prevent popping up the keyboard when it was needed. Seems the messaging app was not too eager about writing messages. The WiFi negotiation should now prevent unnecessary password dialogs if the connection cannot be established immediately. This reduces the annoying pop-up and also creation of multiple entries labeled (1) (2) etc for the same SSID. Let´s talk about audio bugs and media hub: First we fixed a situation that prevented to put music on pause when the headphone cable has been removed and rather continued playback through the device´s main speaker, quite annoying. Then we fixed a bug in media-hub which put the device to sleep after the first piece of music was played, resulting in a very choppy and broken playback of all music pieces thereafter. Also the display went dark when playing remote media that contained video information only, since media-hub did believe its audio only. The UBports team has announced a new version of the project's mobile-focused operating system. The project, which continues the work of Ubuntu Touch, has published a new update: UBports 16.04 OTA-18. The new update focuses on improved efficiency. "Despite the seeming will of the internet to always have the latest and most powerful technology, we still have a lot of people using devices with just 1GB of RAM. The BQ E4.5 and E5 HD are old devices, sure, but they still work and make a lot of people happy. OTA-18 almost always feels faster than OTA-17 on the same device. Unless you know what to look for, though, it's hard to say why. We've made Lomiri's wallpaper rendering far more efficient in this release. Without going into gorey details, we've managed to coax QML's image loader into only loading one copy of your wallpaper. We've also made it scale down the wallpaper to reduce the number of pixels in RAM at any time. The amount of RAM saved by these changes varies depending on your device and whether you've set a custom wallpaper or not. If you have a custom wallpaper, you save at least 30MB of RAM on any device by upgrading to OTA-18. A larger-resolution wallpaper will use far less RAM on OTA-18 than on OTA-17, but the savings are greater for devices with a low screen resolution, so on an older device like the E4.5 with the default wallpaper, expect to save about 60MB of RAM. You'll also see better performance across the board. With a smaller background image, it's easier for Qt to put together the scene that is displayed on your phone. The project's latest release is 16.04 OTA-17 which introduces new device support, camera fixes across multiple devices, and an update to the Mir display software. "Ubuntu Touch now has support for NFC hardware in most of our devices running with Android 9 hardware compatibility, including the Pixel 3a and Volla Phone. NFC support gives app developers the ability to read or write NFC tags; or even to communicate with another device using the protocol. People have already been thinking up ideas for how to use NFC features to read from passive medical monitors... This is a feature that seems to make people very excited. You can find some demo apps for this feature on Alfred's GitHub, ut-nfcd-p2p-demo showcases support for two Ubuntu Touch devices communicating while ut-nfcd-ndev-demo shows off reading and writing NFC tags. The UBports team have announced the release of a new update, UBports 16.04 OTA-16. The new update upgrades the version of the Qt toolkit used with the mobile operating system and introduces several improvements to the Morph web browser. "OTA-16 is the second-largest release of Ubuntu Touch ever (OTA-4, the switch from Ubuntu 15.04 to 16.04, being the largest). In this release, we upgraded the installed version of the Qt frameworks from v5.9.5 to v5.12.9. Qt makes up a massive part of Ubuntu Touch, and using it saves us huge amounts of time while creating software that can scale between phone, tablet, and desktop uses. Upgrading it put us back inside Qt's Long-Term Support cycle and gave us a number of new features we hope to take advantage of in Ubuntu Touch and the Lomiri operating environment. Over 1/3 of the binary packages contained in Ubuntu Touch have changed in this release! This includes not only the various Qt libraries, but also packages that Qt libraries depend on." The UBports team has announced a new update for UBports 16.04. The new update, OTA-15, introduces stable support for more devices and provides a number improvements to the camera app, web browser, and calls: "Ratchanan finally got fed up with the "Redial last called number" button not working on his Bluetooth headset and fixed it. Now it is possible to dial calls from Bluetooth devices, including some car infotainment systems which provide an interface to browse your phone's contacts. Unfortunately, whilst dialing calls was fixed, the subsequent call audio is still broken. Some devices will still have trouble connecting two-way audio, and some have even reported adverse effects when trying it. For example, the Nexus 5 may play loud static over the Bluetooth headset instead of the caller's audio. Please try a test call (while you are in a safe place!) and report the result back to us before trying to take a call while driving. Ratchanan also added a Thai input method to our on-screen keyboard. It does not have auto-correction, but this is an excellent addition for our Thai users. Thank you, Ratchanan! If you are using a device with an arm64 build of Ubuntu Touch, you may have noticed that missed calls were reported by the caller's number rather than by their contact name. The UBports team have announced the launch of Ubuntu Touch 16.04 OTA-14, the latest version of the project's mobile operating system. The new version introduces support for more devices, updates driver and hardware support, and a number of interface improvements were made: "At the beginning of each development cycle, we decide what our main focus for the cycle is going to be. For OTA-14, we chose to focus on Android 9 support. We believe this will help power the launch of our sponsor's Volla Phone delivering it as a daily driver into the hands of its new recipients. This was largely a success: We were able to fix issues with swiping apps away to close them, Ratchanan did quite a number on camera support, and external display support with HardwareComposer2 now works. The UBports team have announced the launch of Ubuntu Touch 16.04 OTA-13, the latest version of the project's mobile operating system. The new release includes support for six new devices, including the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, and four editions of the Sony Xperia. QtWebEngine has been updated too which offers better web browser performance. "QtWebEngine 5.14 is here. The system QtWebEngine has now been updated to version 5.14.2 from 5.11. This brings a newer version of Chromium to our included Morph Browser and all webapps. The browser is now 25% faster across all devices in the JetStream2 JavaScript and WebAssembly benchmarks, demonstrating much faster webapp performance. You are no longer limited to selecting a single word, or an entire line, or an entire paragraph of text to copy! Now you can use the touch handles provided to pick only the text you want. It is now possible to open downloaded PDFs, MP3s, pictures, and text files in the browser via the 'Open' button in the top-right corner of the 'Open with' page. The UBports team has published an update to their mobile operating system. The new version, 16.04 OTA-12 introduces a new version of the Lomiri (formerly Unity8) user interface and Mir now supports working with Wayland clients. "The headline feature of this new release is our import of Canonical's final changes to Unity8. This is a transition that started in April of 2019 and has brought many new features. As an Ubuntu Touch user, you'll be seeing the effects of the revision right away -- the Ubuntu Touch 'home screen', the Unity8 Dash, has now been replaced by a blank background, with the Drawer serving as the new app list. The new version of Unity8 performs extensive self-tests, helping us to avoid introducing new bugs or triggering old ones again. Unity8 is now called Lomiri, though the code naming is only being updated slowly to reflect this. Most importantly for us, we upgraded from Mir 0.24, released back in 2015, to Mir 1.2, released in 2019. This newer version of Mir features support for Wayland clients!" The UBports team has published an update to their mobile operating system. The new version, 16.04 OTA-11, features improved keyboard navigation, more fine-grained web browsing options, and push notifications no longer require that the user have an Ubuntu One account. "We were calling this a "small release" originally. Our plan was to cover the backlog of pull requests that weren't quite ready for OTA-10. It turns out, that made this 'small' update not small at all. Your keyboard, now smarter: Kugi has outdone himself this time. With this update you'll find a new way to edit text via the Ubuntu Touch on-screen keyboard: the Advanced Text Functions. Using this feature, you can move around your typed text, undo and redo actions, move around a text selection rectangle, and use the cut/copy/paste commands, all from the same overlay. To get started, press and hold the space bar! We are still unsure about the discoverability of this feature, so stay tuned for changes that will make it even easier to find and use! This update also adds the option of a Dvorak keyboard layout for the refined OSK user. The PR included fixes to allow multiple keyboard layouts to share the same correction dictionary and word overrides. Huge thanks, zoenb! The project's latest release is UBports 16.04 OTA-8 which introduces stability improvements, extends the dark theme to the web browser and opens the door for more text to be translated. "OTA-8 is appearing as a staged rollout for all supported Ubuntu Touch devices over the next five days, completing on Sunday, March 10th. OTA-8 is primarily a stability improvement release as we continue to work on using upstream technologies in Ubuntu Touch, increasing our project output. Ubuntu Touch has an experimental system-wide dark theme that is supported by most of the core apps and many of the apps in the OpenStore. Since it is experimental, it can only be enabled using the UT Tweak Tool (though some apps such as Weather, FluffyChat and TELEports have it as a built in option). The UBports team has announced the release of a new update, 16.04 OTA-6. The new version brings fixes and stability improvements, as well as several enhancements to the Morph web browser. "OTA-6 brings a number of fixes and improvements to Ubuntu Touch. In this release, we primarily focused on bug fixes and stability improvements. Half of the confirmed closed tickets for OTA-6 affected the Morph browser. This got to be so high, in fact, it swayed the decision to start the release process! A number of high-visibility issues were fixed: Unable to restore previous session at startup. No way to accept self-signed certificates. Webapps cannot access local content on device. ReCaptcha says "browser not supported". Media playback does not stop when a tab is closed. Scrollbar theme does not match the system theme." The new release, UBports 16.04 OTA-5, includes several bug and stability improvements. The update also features a new web browser. "The old Oxide web engine 'Browser' app is being replaced by our new QtWebEngine browser, Morph (formerly known as browser-ng). 'Morphing' the browser to QtWebEngine means that the code will have upstream benefits from the Qt company, and it uses a more recent version of the Chromium engine as its base. This should resolve a number of browser issues, and make use of new scaling features. Morph Browser takes advantage of Qt Automatic Scaling, so that the websites you visit look the way that they are supposed to no matter what form factor you are using.
Since Ubuntu Touch currently runs on both mobile phones and tablets (and possibly more devices down the road) it's important that things display at appropriate sizes. Qt Automatic Scaling will allow developers to write apps using the Qt Quick Controls 2 and they will display at an optimal size for the form factor. The 3CX client, included in the distribution, can also be installed separately on most hardware as well as the cloud. It provides a complete open standards-based IP PBX and phone system that works with popular SIP trunks and IP phones. It will automatically configure all supported peripherals and it also comes with clients for Windows, OS X, iOS and Android. The ISO image includes a free license for the 3CX PBX edition. The ISO image contains the standard Debian installer which installs a minimal system with the nginx web server, PostgreSQL database, iptables firewall and Secure Shell.
