Flexbeta has published a review of Turbolinux 10 F, which covers most of the addtional multimedia features of Turbolinux 10 F as well as all the other aspects of this operating system: "Overall TurboLinux 10 F is a very quick and responsive operating system, one of the fastest distributions I have used. No unneeded services are enabled (or included) and the configuration structure seems very easy to follow. With all the extra browser plugins, the ability to decode Windows Media Files and the inclusion of the excellent PowerDVD, this operating system is great for those who want to use a fully functional Linux system 'out of the box' (as long as you can live with the annoyances and the lack of choice in software)." All this done legally and completely licensed..." Read the full review with screenshots here.

OSNews has reviewed the new Turbolinux 10 Desktop, released in Japan last month and available world-wide later this week: "In short, Turbolinux 10D is probably not the ideal for a home user, but is certainly able to stand on its own merit. It has some issues to overcome, especially for deployment on a variety of PCs like you'd find on varied systems like home desktops. In my estimation, it's a very fitting work desktop, ideal for standard tasks, but not for a flexible system that a power user's home PC might be. I expect that, if the developers continue to invest in the English side of things, that 11D could be a serious competitor to the desktop distributions out there now." Some of the more interesting features include StarSuite 7; Japanese support in Windows Network, NTFS auto mount and USB flash memory; easy compressed (ZIP) file creation by clicking right mouse button; automount of CD-ROMs and floppy disks and auto shutdown function. Full details (in Japanese) are available on the product page, while the company's English language web site promises availability on 15 November. |
A new beta release of Turbolinux has been announced. Turbolinux 9 Workstation, code name "Suzuka" is the first Linux distribution shipping with Kernel 2.6.0 (test3) as its default Linux Kernel. This release seems like a response to a revival of interest in desktop Linux in Japan with strong emphasis on Windows-like look and feel and interoperability with other Microsoft applications (the boxed product will ship with Sun's StarSuite) as well as seemless integration of the product into mixed OS network environments. If you can read Japanese, the release announcement has further details. The beta release is available for free download, but as with all recent Turbolinux releases, registration (name and email address) is required. The interest is high, so expect the downloads of the two ISO images of 648MB and 444MB respectively to be painfully slow. The final release of Turbolinux 9 Workstation is expected to ship in October.

Turbolinux 8 Server, code name "Viper", has been released. "Turbolinux 8 Server offers businesses a highly secure, high-performance operating system. Enterprise features include 64GB memory support, Large File Support, optimized scheduler and Logical Volume Manager. A highly tuned Kernel 2.4.18 and hyper-threading support are included for lightening fast performance." In a more surprising move, Turbolinux has decided to re-enter the US market with Turbolinux 8 Workstation and Server products; both will be available in the USA from 31 October. More about this on the company's English language product page, which links to further details about the Turbolinux 8 Workstation and Server. If you don't live in the USA or Japan, there currently isn't a way to install the product. Normally Turbolinux provides bootable floppies for FTP and network installation and these are still mentioned in the README, but the image files are missing from the otherwise complete directory tree. Is this an oversight or a deliberate omission? I don't know, but I'll let you know if things change.

ITWorld.com: "Analysts attribute most of Turbolinux's troubles to the company's haphazard marketing and product strategies. Turbolinux was trying to move away from being a Linux distributor to selling products that run on top of Linux, said Stacey Quandt, an analyst at Giga Information Group Inc. in Santa Clara, California. But it developed products that faced stiff competition, or didn't achieve what was promised." Definitely one of the more intelligent analyses about the current situation at Turbolinux. Worth a read.

Rate this project

Before the sensationalist Western press buries Turbolinux out of existence (LinuxGram), let's examine some facts. Turbolinux has yet to release any official statement. The company's English and Japanese web sites function normally. The Japanese web site received a news update on 17 July, the distribution's CVS repository indicates business as usual and the latest security advisory was issued on 13 July (see the company's FTP server.) So has Turbolinux collapsed? I don't know. Possibly the US operation, but that's old news. The Turbolinux distribution is still enormously popular and successful (possibly even profitable) in Japan. That said, I'd like to take this opportunity and correct a common misconception often cited in the US/European Linux media saying that Turbolinux is big in Asia. It is NOT. The only place where it's big is Japan - for the past few years, product announcements, documentation and security advisories were released in Japanese only. The rest of Asia switched to Red Hat long time ago.

Turbolinux 8 Workstation announcement. This is the long announcement in Japanese - the main points being that the product will officially ship on 31 May and that the boxed version will include StarSuite 6 (Sun Microsystems's StarOffice is called StarSuite in Asia due to a trademark dispute in some countries of the region). Also, KDE 2.2.2 is the default desktop, although KDE3 is also included; brand new graphical TurboTools for system configuration as well as the usual improvements in the installer, hardware detection, USB device support, Asian language support and broadband connection tools. The product will retail for 15,800 yen (US$124), although the company's online shop hasn't started taking orders. Following reports of lay-offs, re-evaluation of the business model and generally negative reporting about Turbolinux, I decided to take a detailed look at the company. To summarise the facts in one sentence, I can state this: Turbolinux still produces an excellent distribution. While the company has discontinued the sale of packaged products in the USA, it still offers them in Japan for the equivalent of US$133. You can download the recently released version 7 from the Japanese ftp server (very busy) or some mirrors (try this one). Turbolinux 7 has a sophisticated installer, it supports ext3, JFS and ReiserFS journaling file systems and, besides English, it has an excellent support for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Download it and give it a try - you might be pleasantly surprised!
