Wrishiraj Kaushik has announced the release of SuperX, a desktop distribution based on KDE neon. The new version, SuperX 5.0 "Lamarr", offers a number of visual changes and updates: "With this release, we highlight our approach to innovation, while maintaining our friendliness and focus on design and beauty. Keeping the focus on design Like our previous release, we have tried to make Lamarr a beautiful desktop with design elements being minimal and clean. It features a contrasting and sharp design theme inspired and derived from the Nitrux desktop. In Lamarr, we have simplified Plasma 5 by removing many controls which may confuse the everyday user. New welcome screen: Lamarr features a re-designed welcome screen with a heartbeat animated logo. The desktop: The desktop design has been kept traditional and minimal with modern design cues featuring a white color scheme by default. The panel: The Plasma 5 panel has been modified to keep a minimal set of configuration options, which we feel is helpful to new Linux users, who may otherwise get overwhelmed by the power of customization Plasma offers out of the box." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download: SuperX_5.0_Lamarr.iso (2,250MB, pkglist). |

Sunit Kumar Nandi has announced the launch of SuperX 3.0, code name "Grace". The new release, which is named after computing pioneer Grace Hopper, focuses on providing an attractive desktop solution on top of a stable platform. The release announcement mentions some of the features that go into making the distribution's desktop responsive: "Grace gives more priority to application responsiveness; you will feel it right from the start - a fast, smooth, responsive system. Grace, by default, compresses unused memory pages within RAM rather than swapping out to the swap partition, making it responsive even when the system memory is low. Commonly used applications are preloaded and cached in memory for faster start-up of your favorite applications. Grace features a beautiful startup splash that changes its background to whatever the user’s wallpaper is, giving SuperX a really smooth transition from the splash screen to the desktop. It features a flat design theme for the desktop shell, with bright, contrasting colors." SuperX 3.0 ships with KDE 4.13.3, Linux kernel 3.13 and a full range of multimedia support. Wrishiraj Kaushik has announced the release of SuperX 2.1, an Ubuntu-based distribution with a tweaked KDE desktop, aimed at beginners and casual Linux users: "This is SuperX 2.1, code name 'Ada'. SuperX 2.1 is a minor update to 'Darwin' and contains mostly performance tweaks and updated software stack. If you have installed Darwin and have constantly updated it, you are probably running 'Ada' at the moment as we updated the packages a few weeks ago but no ISO images were available then. As an effort to enhance user experiences in Ada we've decided to remove certain software from the default selection that doesn't play well with SuperX: Firefox - yes it is a great browser, but Chromium plays better with SuperX, especially when it comes to global menu integration; Blender - a very specialized application, showcases the power of open-source development, we removed it because the real use of this great software is limited to 3D designers and animators only. Apart from this, we've updated KDE to 4.10.5." Here is the full release announcement with a screenshot. Download (MD5): SuperX_2.1_Ada_64-bit.iso (1,174MB). |

Wrishiraj Kaushik has announced the release of SuperX 2.0, an Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution with KDE 4.10.2: "This is SuperX 2.0, code-named 'Darwin'. It comes with Linux kernel 3.2 and KDE 4.10.2 by default. For those who want newer kernels, they are available in the repository. SuperX 2.0 is a whole new release of SuperX which differs fundamentally from the 1.x releases. Starting from SuperX 2.0 we are going our own way, making a diversion from our upstream distribution. We still use the Ubuntu code base but from this release we only use the LTS versions and development is done on its solid foundation. But unlike other solid, stability-concerned Linux operating systems, we provide the latest userland software like LibreOffice 4 and KDE 4.10. Starting from Darwin, we are keeping our core stable but will provide latest and greatest applications." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information, screenshots and known issues.
