Michael K. Johnson has announced the release of rPath Linux 2.0, a highly customisable appliance operating system featuring the Conary package management utility: "rPath is pleased to announce that rPath Linux 2 is now available and recommended for general use as an appliance platform. What's new? rPath Linux 2 is the next step in the evolution of the rPath Linux platform. In addition to a technology refresh (new versions of included packages), rPath Linux 2 is better tuned as a platform to show off your work. Just enough OS - rPath Linux 2 is smaller than rPath Linux 1. Boot splash branding - rPath Linux 2 implements a graphical boot process which is easy to customize to look the way you want. Additional security mechanisms: - several additional runtime security measures have been added to most packages. More robust system boot - the syslinux bootloader is now the default bootloader....." Michael K. Johnson has announced the third development release of rPath Linux 2.0, an appliance operating system featuring the Conary package management: "The third beta test snapshot toward rPath Linux 2 has been released. New in this release: all updates, particularly security updates, since rPath Linux 2 Beta 2 have been incorporated into this release; Anaconda installation onto iSCSI now works correctly; the kernel portion of open-vm-tools is now in kernel:vmware instead of kernel:runtime to facilitate removing those modules on systems that need to run the host modules instead; the telnet-server package is now available; the splashy boot/shutdown graphical splash screen program is now gracefully quiet by default, preventing it from presenting scary-looking error messages in normal operation...." Michael K. Johnson has announced the availability of a new alpha release of rPath Linux 2: "The fourth alpha snapshot toward rPath Linux 2 has been released. It is very different from all previous snapshots. It has been trimmed down into a smaller, more focused, better base for appliances: smaller kernel, smaller group of core software for an installed system. It is available in our new 'appliance installer' format, in which package selection is not enabled and installation is much faster and requires much less memory. It has a new compiler and toolchain, and has been completely rebuilt from source using the rMake build tool. In addition, it includes newer versions of many included software components." Michael K. We modified packages that need to know about servicedir, which we can then change to /srv to comply with the latest FHS; this is a recipe change that will not show up in the binaries until we change the definition of servicedir. We also changed recipes to make it easier to change to Python 2.4 in the future. We added a few more requirements, as well. Specifix Linux 0.10 currently has dependency closure for all packages except OpenOffice.org and Perl. These packages have erroneous dependencies that will be fixed soon. A new version of Specifix Linux has been uploaded to mirrors: "Now available, Specifix Linux 0.7 (ALPHA) - Even More Alpha Than Before. This version is the first to use a 2.6 kernel and an updated anaconda code base. That makes this release much less tested than our previous versions. The following packages were added: ethereal, gnumeric, inkscape, libieee1284, libsigc++, tclx, xfsprogs, kernel, pyparted, system-config-mouse. Many packages have been updated, but most of the source-build number increases were due to updating upstream URLs. The binaries haven't changed dramatically." More information, including a list of download mirrors can be found in the announcement. Download: specifix-linux-0.7.iso (660MB).

Specifix is a Linux distribution developed by two former Red Hat engineers Kim Knuttila and Erik Troan. Specifix is still in early development, but regular snapshots are available for download and testing by interested parties. The latest release is version 0.6, released today: "The weekly snapshot of the distribution is now available. This build of the distribution uses Conary 0.8.0. As a result of the new changeset format, the ISO image is almost 60MB smaller than the 0.5 release, yet contains even more packages. That's a savings of almost 9%." Here is the rest of the announcement. Download: specifix-linux-0.6.iso (611MB). More information about Specifix is available on the distribution's web site, and also in these recently published reports by ComputerWorld and SD Times.
