The developers of the highly portable NetBSD operating system have announced the release of an update to their NetBSD 9.x branch. The new NetBSD 9.4 release mostly contains bug fixes and minor upgrades. The project has also issued a warning about the 9.4 release containing an out of date version of OpenSSL for compatibility purposes: "NetBSD 9.4 contains various improvements pulled up from the current branch to the netbsd-9 stable branch since NetBSD 9.3 was cut on August 4, 2022. NetBSD 9.4 is primarily a bug and security fix release, however, there are some new features, such as support for more MegaRAID controllers, ZTE MF112 and D-Link DWM222 USB 3G modems, and improved CPU feature detection for newer AMD/Intel devices. All users of netbsd-9 should upgrade if they are not following the stable branch. Important: the version of OpenSSL included with NetBSD 9.x is now unsupported unless a support contract is purchased from OpenSSL, and cannot be upgraded without breaking the ABI compatibility we’ve promised for the netbsd-9 branch. Users are recommended to update to NetBSD 10 or use OpenSSL from pkgsrc." The release announcement offers additional information. Download (MD5, pkglist): NetBSD-9.4-amd64.iso (495MB, torrent). |

The portable NetBSD operating system has reached a new milestone with the release of NetBSD 10.0. The new version introduces a number of performance and security improvements: "Benchmarks of NetBSD 10 show huge performance and scalability gains over NetBSD 9.x, especially on multiprocessor and multicore systems, for compute and filesystem-bound applications. Areas of improvement included: switched the kernel's file path lookup cache to use faster per-directory red-black trees; improved scheduler performance, including the ability to more appropriately spread load on a mixture of slow and fast cores (e.g. big.LITTLE Arm CPUs); various optimizations for the machine-independent virtual memory system; improved tracking of clean/dirty pages, speeding up fsync(2) on large files by orders of magnitude; improved parallelization - rewritten page allocator with awareness of CPU topology, replaced global counters with per-CPU counters, and reduced lock contention; improved the performance of the select(2) and poll(2) system calls; improved the performance of tmpfs; implemented lazy update of atime/mtime; various optimizations of architecture-dependent x86 and AArch64 code, vastly improved network and I/O throughput on aarch64...." Additional details, including a list of the CPUs NetBSD supports, can be found in the project's release notes. Download (MD5, pkglist): NetBSD-10.0-amd64.iso (622MB, torrent).

NetBSD is a highlight portable operating system with a focus on having a clean, minimal design. The project's latest development snapshot is probably the last release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. "Since RC1 there have been numerous changes, including major updates to external software included in the release: Postfix, OpenSSH, and the firmware used for Raspberry PI devices. Various issues with RC1 have been fixed, including installer (sysinst) crashes. Lots of architecture specific fixes happend, e.g. various toolchain changes for VAX (so it is now finaly self-hosting again), and kernel changes for macppc, netwinder, and alpha. For RC3 only few (relatively) minor changes were made, including https certificate verification in libfetch (which is used by pkg_ad(1)), and also improvements to the EFI bootloader to better deal with booting from CD (or in virtual machines ISO images), plus lots of various bug fixes. Especially on amd64 machines please notes that we got a new DRM/KMS subsystem version, and this may lead to fallout on some hardware." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Download: NetBSD-10.0_RC3-amd64.iso (594MB, MD5, torrent). |

NetBSD is a highly portable operating system which offers a minimal and clean design. The project has published its second (and probably final) release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. Among the enhancements in this snapshot are cyptographic updates and an experimental implementation of WireGuard. "Compatibility with WireGuard: A new interface, wg(4), provides a VPN tunnel compatible with the WireGuard specification. The driver is experimental and needs more testing. A userspace implementation using a rump kernel server is also included, see wg-userspace(4)/ The NetBSD implementation works with WireGuard implementations used by commercial VPN providers, Android, Linux, and more. Stronger, faster cryptography: Added an implementation of the Adiantum cipher for efficient disk encryption with cgd(4) on systems without AES acceleration. Added support for shared keys to cgdconfig(8), allowing multiple derived subkeys to be used across multiple drives. Switched the default password hashing algorithm to Argon2id, winner of the Password Hashing Competition. The algorithm's hardness automatically scales with system performance. Added support for Argon2id to cgdconfig(8) for use in password-based disk encryption. The kernel now takes advantage of CPU acceleration and vectorization for common cryptographic algorithms on x86 and Arm, including AES and ChaCha. All in-kernel implementations of AES are now constant-time on all architectures. Swap encryption is now automatic using the vm.swap_encrypt=1 sysctl(8) variable." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Download: NetBSD-10.0_RC2-amd64.iso (594MB, MD5, torrent). |

Martin Husemann has announced the availability of first release candidate for NetBSD 10.0, nearly 11 months after its beta snapshot: "The NetBSD project is pleased to announce the first release candidate of the upcoming 10.0 release, please help testing. The netbsd-10 release branch is more than a year old now, so it is high time the 10.0 release makes it to the front stage. This matches the long time it took for the development branch to get ready for branching, a lot of development went into this new release. This also caused the release anouncement to be one of the longest we ever did. Especially on amd64 machines, please notes that we got a new DRM/KMS subsystem version and this may lead to fallout on some hardware. Unfortunately not all known bugs from the release engineering pre-release task list could be fixed in time for this release - we will continue to improve the current state and hope to have more of them solved for the next (10.1) release." See this blog post and the detailed release announcement for further information and upgrade instructions. Martin Husemann has announced the availability of a new release candidate for NetBSD 8.1. The new release candidate ships with CPU vulnerability workarounds, a new wireless driver and several performance improvements. Husemann writes: "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 8.1 RC1, the first (and hopefully final) release candidate for the upcoming NetBSD 8.1 release. Over the last year, many changes have been made to the NetBSD 8 stable branch. As a stable branch the release engineering team and the NetBSD developers are conservative with changes to this branch and many users rely on the binaries from our regular auto-builds for production use. Now it is high time to cut a formal release, right before we go into the next release cycle with the upcoming branch for NetBSD 9. Martin Husemann has announced the availability of the second (and probably final) release candidate for NetBSD 8.0, a highly portable operating system available for dozens of processor architectures. The new release candidate fixes a number of issues that existed in the previous snapshot and includes kernel security fixes for CPU bugs. "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 8.0 RC 2, the second (and hopefully final) release candidate for the upcoming NetBSD 8.0 release. Unfortunately the first release candidate did not hold up in our extensive testing (also know as eating our own dog food): many NetBSD.org servers/machines were updated to it and worked fine, but the auto build cluster, where we produce our binaries, did not work well. The issue was tracked down to a driver bug (Intel 10 GBit Ethernet), only showing up in certain configurations, and it has been fixed now. Other security events, like the new FPU related exploit on some Intel CPUs, caused further kernel changes, so we are not going to release NetBSD 8.0 directly, but instead provide this new release candidate for additional testing. Jeff Rizzo has announced that the initial beta builds of NetBSD 6.0 are now available for download and testing: "On behalf of NetBSD developers, I'm happy to announce the availability of a public beta of NetBSD 6.0, for your testing pleasure. This beta is substantially feature-complete; there may be some additional changes to the installer and possibly some additional hardware support if some is found missing and is easily added, but the major changes are done. What we need now is for you, the end users, to test it in your preferred configuration. Here are some highlighted changes since NetBSD 5.0: time_t is now 64 bits; syslog improvements - reliable TCP connections, encryption, syslog protocol API; LKMs removed, superseded by the new module(7) framework...." Soren Jacobsen has announced the availability of the fourth release candidate for NetBSD 5.0, a BSD operating system designed to run on a large number of processor architectures: "Today, we have two things to be happy about. First, the fourth release candidate of NetBSD 5.0 is available for download. Second, this announcement, like RC3's, coincides with an important birthday: that of Billy West. Below are some highlighted changes since RC3: added the RLIMIT_AS resource, which limits the total address space available to processes; improved NFS server stability; FFS improvements; a fix for a pf(4) DoS; re(4) now works with the RealTek 8111C, which is found on many current motherboards with Intel chipsets. A new release candidate of NetBSD 2.1 is now available for testing: "On behalf of the NetBSD Release Engineering team, I'm happy to announce the availability of NetBSD 2.1 RC5 for testing. (A security issue came up shortly after RC4 was tagged, so it was never announced). NetBSD 2.1 RC5 is available in the 'daily builds' section of your local FTP mirror, and we encourage you to test it out and report any bugs using send-pr(1). We anticipate that this will be the final release candidate for NetBSD 2.1, barring any major issues or security problems." Read the rest of the release announcement and installation instructions (i386) for more information. The list of FTP mirrors carrying the RC5 binary packages can be found on this page.

The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that update 2.0.2 of the NetBSD operating system is now available: "NetBSD 2.0.2 is the second security/critical update of the NetBSD 2.0 release branch. This represents a selected subset of fixes deemed critical in nature for stability or security reasons. This is also the first binary security/critical update since NetBSD 2.0. NetBSD 2.0.1 was tagged within the CVS repository, and is available from there as a source update, but its full binary release was preempted by patches incorporated into 2.0.2 and build hardware issues." Read the full announcement and check the complete list of changes. Download (i386): i386cd.iso (171MB), also available via BitTorrent. Our regular readers may have already known about the availability of NetBSD 2.0.2 mentioned in the Reader Comment Area of DistroWatch Weekly.

ONLamp has published an interview with the developers of NetBSD: "We are planning to have more frequent releases. We have made a lot of mistakes in the past that have delayed the release schedules, but hopefully we have learned from them. We were very aggressive about committing large sub-system upgrades just before a release, and that added a lot of bugs to the code that needed to be fixed for the release. This not only delays the releases, but also adds extra work, since each bug needs to be tested on head and pulled up via patches by the release engineering group." The 2-page interview starts here.

NewsForge has published an interview with several prominent NetBSD developers: "NetBSD is widely known as the most portable operating system in the world. It currently supports 52 system architectures, all from a single source tree, and is always being ported to more. NetBSD 2.0 continues the long tradition with major improvements in file system and memory management performance, significant security enhancements, and support for many new platforms and peripherals. To celebrate the release, we've asked several well-known NetBSD developers to comment on some of NetBSD 2.0's new features." The questions and answers are highly technical, but they give an interesting overview of recent changes in this multi-platform operating system. Read the interview here.

The long awaited NetBSD 2.0 has been released: "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that release 2.0 of the NetBSD operating system is now available. NetBSD 2.0, the tenth major release of the NetBSD Operating System, has been released, with binary distributions for 48 architectures. More information is available in the 2.0 release announcement. NetBSD 2.0 continues our long tradition with major improvements in file system and memory management performance, major security enhancements, and support for many new platforms and peripherals. The addition of a native threads implementation for all platforms and symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) on i386 and other popular platforms were long-standing goals for NetBSD 2.0. Both of these goals have now been met -- SMP support has been added for i386, SPARC, and PowerPC, and the SMP support on Alpha and VAX has been improved." The development branch of NetBSD 2.0 has been tagged as "RC2": "NetBSD 2.0 RC2 tagged. After tagging NetBSD-2.0_RC1, there have been a few pullups that fix some issues with Linux emulation under NetBSD/i386 as well as some installation problems under some of the arm-based ports. This means that the final release of NetBSD 2.0 will need to be pushed back approximately 1-2 weeks to allow for testing of this Release Candidate. As usual, binary snapshots will soon be available on the release engineering FTP server." Read here for more information.

Moving closer towards the release of version 2.0, the NetBSD project has announced the first release candidate of NetBSD 2.0: "The NetBSD Releng Team has announced that the first Release Candidate for NetBSD 2.0 (ie NetBSD-2.0_RC1) has been tagged. This is a major milestone in the much anticipated release of NetBSD 2.0: from now on, any pullups must address some form of show-stopping issue to even be considered. The NetBSD Project encourages all users to test the binary snapshots that will soon be available on the release engineering ftp server. If no pullups are necessary, then the 2.0 release should occur around the middle of October." The full release announcement. There are no ISO images for download (except for these unofficial ones), but the product can be installed directly from the NetBSD Release Engineering Server or mirrors by following these instructions.
