It also includes SMB-desirable features like site-to-site/remote-to-site VPN and Internet proxy services (with filtering add-ons available) at no additional cost. It can be quickly installed as an effective solution, instantly offering greater awareness of threats to, and possible compromises of, your SMB intranet. If you are looking for a Linux-based firewall, this comparative review of Astaro Security Linux and IPCop Firewall by Shadow Lair might be of help: "The only downside to the Astaro product not mentioned in detail above is that it is not completely free. Home users can get a free license but it does not activate all the functionality of the product. IPCop is a completely free product with constant open source development and upgrades. I personally find IPCop easier to install and configure. Although there is slightly less reporting than I would like it is far from inadequate. I have to admit the high availability features of Astaro sound great but most home users don't have the hardware to support this type of setup. Large businesses would, in my opinion be better off using Astaro as its integration with Webtrends will greatly ease administration and monitoring. Home users and small businesses would be far better off with IPCop. The overall ratings of these products are very close but I have to give IPCop 5 stars and Astaro an overall 4 stars." South West LUG reviews IPCop: "I found IPCop ideal for the job. It is quick, the interface is uncomplicated and it will always be GPL. Technically, there is little difference between the features of Smoothwall and IPCop. IPCop's best advantage is the lack of advertising and the lack of 'you will buy the commercial product'. If you're trying to decide between IPCop and Smoothwall, choose IPCop. There are additional features not included in Smoothwall and the software does appear to be more up-to-date. About a 28meg download. Get it!" IPCop gets 4.5 stars out of 5; read the complete review here.

It is not an additional security service you would run on your machine; rather, it is a complete operating system and firewall administration kit in a box that the user would dedicate a single machine to house and run as an Internet gateway."
