IndLinux
The goal of the IndLinux project was to create a Linux distribution that supports Indian languages at all levels. This "Indianisation" project will strive to bring the benefits of Information Technology down to the Indian masses. We want to make technology accessible to the majority of India that does not speak English. The task of localisation has several pieces that need domain expertise. Some examples are I/O modules, development of fonts, kernel enhancements, word translation etc. The project was looking for experts and volunteers to champion the cause of Indian language computing. You may volunteer and participate here. The Indian Linux project was open source and completely free. It was licensed under the GNU General Public License.

The elementary OS project has announced the release of version 8.0 of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution. The new release focuses on adjusting application permissions and expanding the default Flatpak repositories: "Application settings has an all-new design that expands your control over permissions. We now support adjusting the run-time permissions in Flatpak's Permissions Store - these are set when an app explicitly asks for your permission to access a feature while it's running. So if you've previously denied an app access to run in the background or granted an app permission to set the wallpaper, you can change your mind at any time and adjust permissions here. We've also adjusted the language of install-time permissions - aka sandbox holes - to be more clear that these represent advanced system access and the implications of adjusting them. Plus the descriptions of several individual items were changed based on your feedback to use less technical language. And app permission pages now show the app's icon and description." Details on the changes along with screenshots can be found in the release announcement. Download (SHA256, pkglist) and purchase options are offered on the project's home page. |

elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features the Pantheon desktop environment. The project has updated its 7.x series, code name "Horus", with a number of new features and improvements. One focus of the new 7.1 release is privacy: "Today, we're proud to announce that OS 7.1 is available to download now and shipping on several high-quality computers. This release represents the sum of our work over the last several months as a single major update to the OS 7 series and includes all of the monthly OS updates we've detailed since the OS 7 release. One of the most prevalent problems we face in our current digital lives is the violation of our privacy and the lack of consent when interacting with our devices each day. Portals seek to provide a safe and consensual way for apps to interact with the operating system and ensure that they only get access to the data and features that you want them to. One of the ways that apps may become intrusive is by automatically starting themselves or running in the background without your permission. In OS 7.1, we now provide the Background & Autostart Portal which alerts you when apps are running in the background and makes sure that apps ask your permission before they can automatically start up when you turn on your device." Additional details are provided in the project's release announcement. The elementary OS ISO image is available for download from the distribution's home page (ISO image size: 2,868MB, pkglist). |

The elementary OS team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution. The new release, elementary OS 7.0 "Horus", intrduces a number of new changes, many of them focused on the software centre: "As always, AppCenter is the centerpiece of elementary OS. The primary purpose of any operating system is to support the apps that you use to work, play, and express yourself creatively. In the latest version of AppCenter we've worked on making app descriptions more engaging with more information, making it easier to update to the latest versions of apps, and improving support for sideloading and alt stores. We've also worked on improving AppCenter's responsiveness - making sure you can comfortably use it when tiling and on small displays as well as better using space on large displays. We've completely rewritten the way navigation works in AppCenter and now support two-finger swipe gestures to navigate back. The entire app loads much faster and provides more feedback when running background tasks via an overlay bar in the bottom right or left corner." The elementary team have announced the release of elementary OS 6.1 which carries the codename "Jolnir". The new release features the same base operating system as 6.0, though with a number of evolutionary improvements. Some of these changes affect the distribution's software centre: "AppCenter continues to fill out with apps from developers—and since the move to Flatpak, all apps that have been released for OS 6 will continue to be available on OS 6.1 and beyond. You can currently find over 90 curated apps in AppCenter, and developers have continued to push out rapid and frequent updates to their apps with new features and bug fixes, as they're in control of their own update schedule. Our shift from Debian packages to Flatpak for both curated and non-curated apps also means we’re able to lean more on Flatpak features, and we’ve been using this as an opportunity to make AppCenter much more engaging and informative right from the start - directly addressing feedback about the discoverability of the wide variety of apps in AppCenter." elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features a custom desktop environment called Pantheon. The project's latest release, elementary OS 6 "Odin", features sandboxed applications via Flatpak bundles, a new dark theme, and multi-touch gestures. "elementary OS 6 leverages cutting-edge sandboxing technology to enforce privacy and security protections at a technical level. In OS 6, all AppCenter apps are now packaged and distributed as Flatpaks, a modern container format that keeps apps siloed away from each other and your sensitive data. Several default elementary OS apps are now being distributed as Flatpaks as well. In addition, elementary OS 6 utilizes Portals to keep you in control of how apps interact with each other and your data. Apps must explicitly request permission in a well-defined way e.g. to get access to files or launch other apps. A new Permissions view in System Settings -> Applications exposes all the permissions apps have requested and gives you control to override or revoke them." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. Downloads through a pay-what-you-want portal are available on the project's home page. elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based desktop distribution. Some of its more interesting features include a custom desktop environment called Pantheon and many custom apps. The project has launched a new beta snapshot which previews features coming in elementary OS 6.0. The installer's appearance has been polished, work has gone into integrating Flatpak packages, and desktop notifications can now include action buttons for the user to respond with to the pop-up. "We've continued our efforts to ship first-party apps packaged as flatpaks in beta 2. elementary OS 6 now comes with Calculator, Camera, Document Viewer, Screenshot, Tasks and Web from the AppCenter Flatpak repository. As a user, it's entirely transparent - apps launch and behave just as before; they just happen to be packaged in a different way under the hood. As the beta process progresses and we solve sandboxing issues in our apps, we plan to transition even more apps over from Debian packages to flatpaks provided by the AppCenter Flatpak repository. We have also begun testing the third-party process for building Flatpak apps into AppCenter, as teased in the AppCenter Dashboard sprint blog post." The developers have published a new beta snapshot which previews features coming to elementary OS 6.0. There are many changes in the works, including an updated installer, dark theme, development tools, and additional support for Flatpak. "A major shift for elementary OS 6 is the inclusion of Flatpak apps out of the box, as well as an entirely Flatpak-based AppCenter ecosystem. We’ve created and are shipping a Flatpak platform and SDK that include all of the FreeDesktop, GNOME, and elementary libraries and technologies your apps will need to be built as a Flatpak - think of the platform as the elementary OS base in Flatpak form. We’ve updated the relevant developer docs to include information about packaging your app as a Flatpak. If you already have an app on AppCenter or are developing one for elementary OS 6, we highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with writing a Flatpak manifest and testing your app as a Flatpak, as all AppCenter apps in elementary OS 6 and beyond will be built as Flatpaks." Cassidy James Blaede has announced the release of elementary OS 5.1.4, the latest update from the project that develops a beginner-friendly Linux distribution with a custom desktop called Pantheon, based on Ubuntu. This version updates (and renames) the parental control application and revamps the application menu: "Informed by our work last year at the Metered Data and Parental Controls hackfest, we've started overhauling Parental Controls. While we're focusing on the digital wellbeing aspects, we decided to rename it to the more straightforward 'Screen Time & Limits'. But it's more than just a rename; Screen Time & Limits is now available for your own account in addition to other non-administrator accounts on the device—so you can set your own rules around screen time, Internet access and app usage. As a result of reworking the feature, Screen Time & Limits is also much more reliable than before. If you previously had issues with Parental Controls, give Screen Time & Limits a try from System Settings and let us know what you think." The elementary OS team has published a new minor release to the project's 5.1 "Hera" series. The project's new release, elementary OS 5.1.2, introduces newer hardware support via an updated kernel and includes a fix for a significant sudo bug. "A few months ago, we shared how our release process has evolved over time and the release of elementary OS 5.1 'Hera' marked the first time we built the stable ISO image for elementary OS via our new, completely open-source pipeline. With the new process, it has become much easier to tag and release incremental builds of the OS, and consequently today we’ve released a new spin of the 5.1 ISO.The new 5.1.2 ISO comes pre-built with all of the latest goodies from the January updates, as well as a few important hardware and security updates. These include the latest 18.04.3 hardware enablement (HWE) stack provided by Ubuntu, plus a security fix for sudo. Thanks to the HWE updates, elementary OS is now using the the 5.3 Linux kernel which also improves support for newer devices and peripherals - especially AMD Navi GPUs and 2015 MacBook keyboards and trackpads." elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based desktop distribution. Some of its more interesting features include a custom desktop environment called Pantheon and a custom software centre. The project's latest release is elementary OS 5.1 "Hera", which introduces many package updates, a refreshed login screen, and an onboarding application to guide new users through available features. "The newly redesigned login and lockscreen greeter looks sharper, works better, and fixes many reported issues with the previous greeter including focus issues, HiDPI issues, and better localization. The new design in Hera was in response to user feedback from Juno, and enables some nice new features. It now always shows usernames for all users, shows users' backgrounds as cards so you can more easily find users who maybe haven't set differentiating avatars, notifies when Caps or Num Lock are on, and makes 'Log In as Guest' more distinct when it's enabled. The new Onboarding app that ships with Hera introduces key features to users and handles common first-run tasks like managing privacy settings." elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features the Pantheon desktop environment and a custom application store. The project's latest stable release is elementary OS 5.0 "Juno". There are several new improvements to the desktop, file manager and software centre in the new version: "We're happy to debut a brand new Night Light feature with both a manual timer and an automatic Sunrise to Sunset option. Night Light reduces the blue light output of your display, which may help to reduce eye strain and sleeplessness after using your device. When enabled and during the set time, a new Night Light indicator appears in the Panel which can be used to adjust the display temperature or snooze Night Light until the next day. And like all Indicators, it provides a quick way to jump straight into the relevant screen in System Settings. Tiling windows is a popular way to manage app windows, especially on larger displays. While elementary OS has always supported tiling, we've made it even better in Juno. First, there’s now a blue 'feed-forward' preview that shows up to show you how an app will tile when you move it to the edge of the screen." Cody Garver has announced the availability of the second beta release of elementary OS 5.0, a desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and featuring a custom desktop environment called Pantheon: "It's that time again: another beta release. Since beta 1, we've fixed over 200 issues and got back up to over 50 apps in AppCenter built specifically for 'Juno'. We fixed a few issues around Gala, the Greeter, HiDPI and related refinements during the beta 2 cycle. A new Gala daemon provides better native GTK+ context menus for apps. This means that context menus scale properly on HiDPI, plus non-native apps with title bars now also get a menu. Picture-in-picture mode also scales better on HiDPI now. The login and lockscreen greeter is now more crisp on HiDPI. This is because we now have a simple compositor, which also provides things like shadows beneath the shutdown window and indicators. We also now use the same panel on the greeter as in the logged-in session, meaning indicators work more consistently, and you can scrub between them. We fixed an issue in AppCenter where new apps were not properly being displayed on the home page due to a package ID format deprecation." Daniel Foré has announced the availability of the initial public beta build of elementary OS 5.0, the upcoming major new update from the project that develops an Ubuntu-based distribution with a custom desktop environment (Pantheon) and a number of applications built in-house: "Developer preview 'Juno' beta 1 is here. Beta is a special release intended for our 3rd party developers and highly technical users. Developers need a pre-release in order to test and take advantage of new platform features and to publish their apps so that we don't release with an empty store. We also invite highly technical users to test Beta in non-production environments to find major regressions and show-stopping issues. In other words. AppCenter is empty in this release and it is not safe to use in production environments. This is not a release. This is a pre-release. All that being said, we're extremely excited and proud to reach this milestone. elementary OS 5.0 is right around the corner. Let's get that store filled back up, squash some bugs, localize all the things, and release an operating system. Juno is still under active development and we’re expecting to land even more fixes and optimizations before its big debut." Read the full release announcement for more details. The developers of elementary OS have released a new development snapshot. The new beta, elementary OS 0.4 Beta, carries the code name "Loki" and is built using software from the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS repositories. One of the significant new features is the removal of tools which make it easy to (accidentally) install software which has not been vetted. "In the interest of promoting secure software installation methods, as of this release there is no default application for handling .deb packages and the command-line tool add-apt-repository is not available by default. These tools are available to install from the default repositories, but the stance going forward is that software should come from vetted, secure sources or in sandboxed package formats. If you're worried about how users will be able to get and install your applications, don't panic. We'll have a follow-up announcement soon." It will automatically configure all supported peripherals and it also comes with clients for Windows, OS X, iOS and Android. The ISO image includes a free license for the 3CX PBX edition. The ISO image contains the standard Debian installer which installs a minimal system with the nginx web server, PostgreSQL database, iptables firewall and Secure Shell. Options not relevant to 3CX have been removed from the distribution. Download the installation ISO image from here: debian-amd64-netinst-3cx.iso (378MB). |
