Brian Manderville has announced the release of Descent|OS 4.0, a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution featuring a customised MATE (version 1.4.2) desktop environment: "Hello, everyone! I'm writing from my hotel room here in Bellingham, Washington where I've been attending the Linux Fest Northwest all day, and managed to get 4.0 released on schedule. It's only for 64-bit systems at the moment, mainly because that's the only ISO image I have here on this PC, but I'll be finishing up Descent|OS for 32-bit systems and for PowerPC and releasing them next week. Descent|OS is going through a new phase in development, where it will run under an 8-month release cycle, with one service release halfway through the cycle. This will allow for a more stable system, and bug fixes to be deployed quicker while development for Descent|OS 5 goes on. Thanks for testing, and for being loyal users. See you all tomorrow at the second leg of Linux Fest Northwest!" Here is the brief release announcement. Download: DescentOS-4.0-x86_64.iso (1,253MB). |

Brian Manderville has announced the release of Descent|OS, a desktop Linux distribution combining the Ubuntu base system with the latest version of the MATE desktop environment: "I am pleased to announce that the 'Legacy' branch of Descent|OS has been updated to version 3.0.2. Since the main focus of the Ubuntu-based edition is stability, the main upgrades were big fixes. I have fixed the driver install issue, and also fixed the audio applet issue. Here is a list of the full changelog: PulseAudio is officially default, Mate-media-pulse is much more well-implemented than its GStreamer sibling, so I have implemented it to maintain consistency and make it easier for people to change their audio settings; MATE is updated to 1.4, this is actually a huge milestone, because MATE 1.4 is a stable, well-implemented version, and works better with everything in Descent|OS; Lubuntu Software Center is included...." Brian Manderville has announced the release of Descent|OS 3.0, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the MATE (a fork of GNOME 2) desktop environment: "I am pleased to announce that Descent|OS 3 is officially available for download. It is 32-bit only for now, but the PAE kernel is supported after install. In terms of cosmetics, Qt now looks right, and all the packages have been updated. The MATE desktop has been great to work with, and it is stable. It uses the 3.2 series kernel, and is based on Ubuntu 12.04. All the packages have been updated since the release candidate, and it behaves just the way I want it to. I have included a Beginner's Guide for new people to learn how to use Synaptic and the custom keyboard shortcuts." Here is the brief release announcement. Download: Descent-OS3.0-i386.iso (1,061MB).

Brian Manderville has announced the availability of the second alpha release of Descent|OS 3.0, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the MATE desktop environment: "I am pleased to announce that Descent|OS Alpha 2 has been released. Lots of packages are now updated, and the MATE desktop seems to be behaving nicely. That said, the only work really left to do until our projected release date of August 29th is mainly cosmetic. The Plymouth theme needs to be changed and branded into a Descent|OS boot screen, and the Ubiquity install slide show has to be done as well. Apart from that, I am confident it can be used daily, but am only calling it another alpha in case more bugs show up and the fact that cosmetics are not completely finished. Happy testing!" Here is the brief release announcement. Interested testers can download the new Descent|OS live DVD image from here: DescentOS-3-alpha2-i386.iso (930MB).
