Conectiva has released a security and bug-fix update CD for Conectiva Linux 10. From the release notes: "Welcome to the Conectiva Linux 10 Update 1. This CD includes: official updates, installer with fixes, kernel 2.6.10 final plus extra patches, new NVIDIA driver 6629, new Mozilla 1.7.3, drbd 0.7.5, ALSA 1.0.7. This CD can be used in two ways - to update an already installed system with Conectiva Linux 10, doing 'apt-cdrom add' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade', or to install Conectiva Linux 10; simply boot this update CD and follow the normal installation procedures. The installer will use the updated packages and will ask for the other CL 10 CDs according to the installation profile. Due to installer architecture, you can also make a minimal install with only this update CD." The ISO image can be downloaded via BitTorrent (660MB), but it should also be available from Conectiva's mirrors within the next few days.

This is a rare review of one of the oldest existing Linux distributions - Conectiva Linux: "Conectiva Linux 9 is a modern, stable and user-friendly Linux distribution that achieves a good balance between power and simplicity, but is marred by some silly bugs and a lack of graphical configuration tools. That said, it is still worth evaluating, especially for Portuguese and Spanish users, for whom the distribution is really aimed at. New users will sometimes be confused or intimidated by the quirks left behind by the developers, as well as the lack of some graphical configuration tools, but overall Conectiva is still a reasonable choice to consider, especially considering its beautiful, well thought out default desktop." Conectiva is preparing an update to its Conectiva Linux 9 released two months ago. Called "Conectiva Linux 9 Update 1", it will not be a complete release, but rather a single CD complimenting the original 4-CD set of Conectiva 9. The upgrade process will be done with apt-get - "apt-cdrom add && apt-get dist-upgrade" after inserting the update CD will bring your system up to the Update1 level. Find more information (in Portuguese) here and the release notes (both in Portuguese and English) here. The Update1 Beta2 ISO image is only available via the BitTorrent service: cl9upd1-beta2.torrent (658MB) and Conectiva's bugzilla is the preferred way of reporting bugs.

As promised, here comes a list of fast mirrors where the new Conectiva Linux 9 can be downloaded from: ftp.nl.linux.org, ftp.tiscali.nl, fr2.rpmfind.net and rpmfind.creatis.insa-lyon.fr. Remember to read the strong warning in the readme file which stresses that "all four CD images are required for installation". The release notes in English are on the first CD, while the official press release (in Portuguese) is available here. Conectiva Linux is a nice, innovative distribution with plenty of packages and a strong commitment to free software. If downloading 4 CDs sounds like too much work, here is a screenshot of its desktop with the Synaptic package manager (developed by Conectiva) and a Control Center.

This is a brand new release of Conectiva Linux; version 9 comes almost exactly one year after Conectiva 8. Excerpts from the release notes: "The Conectiva Linux 9 installer uses synaptic to select and install packages. Basic components: kernel 2.4.21, GNU C compiler 3.2.2, glibc 2.3.1, XFree86 4.3.0, KDE 3.1.1, GNOME 2.2.2. Kernel packages optimized for single- and multi-processor Athlon and Pentium IV families are bundled; the appropriate kernel should be automatically installed. New applications: MPlayer, OpenOffice.org, Blender, Webmin, Sun's JRE and IBM's Java 2 JDK." Conectiva's web site has more details on its product page (Portuguese only). At the time of writing, the ISO images can only be found on Conectiva's own FTP servers - even if you are lucky and manage to squeeze in, you'll find the downloads painfully slow. There are 4 binary CD images, all of which are required for installation; for the record: cl9-1.iso (630MB), cl9-2.iso (632MB), cl9-3.iso (646MB), cl9-4.iso (620MB). We'll keep you posted about the availability of faster download mirrors.

Several visitors have pointed out that Conectiva 8 ISO are now available on the distribution's main (and hard-to-access) FTP server and mirrors. Try them here: cl8-1.iso (684MB), cl8-2.iso (636MB), cl8-3.iso (700MB). Only the first CD is needed for installation, while the second CD is optional and the third one contains source RPMS. Please note that there is still no official announcement on the Conectiva's web site. The installation on my test system was flawless and the KDE 3 desktop is indeed very pretty. Also note that KDE's version is 3.0rc3, so I have to correct my previous statement - SuSE Linux is the first commercial distribution shipping with the final version of KDE 3. Our Conectiva page has been updated to include this release. |

Conectiva Linux 8.0 announcement. It is always fun to decipher information on websites published in unfamiliar languages, but this is roughly what I could understand from this announcement. Conectiva Linux 8 is now available in stores around Brazil. It comes in two editions - Personal selling for R$109 (US$49) and Professional selling for R$299 (US$134). This release is fully compliant with the Linux Standard Base. Kernel is at 2.4.18 and KDE at 3.0, which makes Conectiva the world's first commercial Linux distribution shipping with KDE3, beating SuSE Linux by only a few days. Other features include major security enhancements and improvements made to the installer. Unfortunately, downloadable ISOs have not yet made an appearance on the distribution's public FTP server or mirrors, but we'll keep you up-to-date when that changes. Our Conectiva page lists the "likely" content of the release derived from the previously published snapshots, so please be aware that the information there, while not too far from correct, might not be 100% accurate. This release should please my good friends at TuxReports who have stated an intention to review it - so hopefully the ISO images will be uploaded soon.
