m0n0wall
m0n0wall was a project aimed at creating a complete, embedded firewall software package that, when used together with an embedded PC, provides all the important features of commercial firewall boxes (including ease of use) at a fraction of the price (free software). m0n0wall was based on a bare-bones version of FreeBSD, along with a web server (thttpd), PHP and a few other utilities. The entire system configuration was stored in one single XML text file to keep things transparent. m0n0wall was probably the first UNIX system that has its boot-time configuration done with PHP, rather than the usual shell scripts, and that has the entire system configuration stored in XML format.

Chinese 2000, a Linux distribution produced by Hong Kong-based Culturecom Holdings, is now available as a free download: cd1gpl102.iso (638MB). As the file name indicates, this is a GPL version stripped of 20 proprietary Chinese fonts as well as KaiOffice (a Chinese enabled, modified version of OpenOffice) found in the boxed version. The distribution's product page is long on detail. It is interesting to note that Culturecom's Vice President is Henry Chu, a well-known figure in Taiwan where he is often referred to as "the father of Chinese computing". Henry Chu is the inventor of Cang Jie, a Chinese character input method based on character shapes rather than phonetic symbols -- a 1980 invention which led to rapid increase in adoption of computer technology throughout the Chinese speaking world. The distribution supports both traditional and simplified Chinese (including printing), as well as English. Visit our Chinese 2000 page for more information.
