Stefan Lippers-Hollmann has announced the availability of the first preview release of sidux 2009-02, a desktop-oriented distribution based on Debian's unstable branch: "We have the pleasure to announce the availability of the first preview for sidux 2009-02 'Aether', shipping with kernel 2.6.30. 'Aether' mostly concentrates on integrating KDE 4 into sidux and implementing the changes caused by kernel 2.6.30. While KDE 4 is certainly a work in progress, both upstream and in terms of making it viable for a release, this marks the first milestone release for sidux. Be aware that the KDE-lite flavours avoid KDE 3 and Qt 3 packages, which means that K3b, Kaffeine and UMTSmon are not installed. These packages will be part of the KDE-full flavours and are still installable." Read the detailed release notes to learn more about all the changes in this release. Another major topic has been the dissolution of the former 'sidux' menu into the XDG compliant menu categories, which -- in combination with the new SVG based artwork -- allow for better compatibility with alternative window managers and desktop environments. Likewise a number of packages have undergone major changes or have been replaced by new approaches." Read the detailed release notes for further information. The sidux project has announced the release of sidux 2007-04, a KDE live and installation CD built from Debian's "sid" tree: "We are proud to announce the immediate availability of the sidux 2007-04 'Eros' release for amd64 and i686 systems, shipping in a 445 MB KDE lite and a 680 MB KDE full flavour. Our fourth release concentrates on X.Org 7.3, XRandR 1.2 and X detection related changes, and the new upstream kernel 2.6.23, combined with an updated mac80211 WLAN stack and drivers, which brought support for a number of additional WLAN cards. While the last two months have been pretty turbulent in Debian sid with X.Org 7.3 entering the scene, several library transitions and infrastructural problems, these issues seem to be mostly resolved for sidux and now allow to provide the best possible open source support for various graphics chipsets and advanced runtime configuration options." The sidux project has announced the second preview release of sidux 2007-04, a Debian-based live CD with the KDE desktop: "It is time to continue the preview season with our second preview heading towards our fourth sidux release, concentrating on further X.Org 7.3, Xrandr 1.2 and X detection testing and finalizing the driver selection for various WLAN cards. Further efforts have been invested into an advanced USB installation, kernel stabilisation and live persistency framework. Various updates, fixes and adaptions have been applied to the complete package list and a lot of translation and localisation related endeavours were started to improve the situation for our non English or German speaking users." The sidux development team has announced that the first preview release of sidux 2007-04 is now ready for testing: "After quite some delays from our planned schedule, due to X.org 7.3 related issues of varying severity, sidux 2007-04 'Eros' is now ready to enter the preview season for amd64 and i686 systems. As usual the previews are shipping only as a small, but fully functional, 'KDE-lite' flavour, to ease up testing and xdelta uploads and will be accompanied by 700 MB 'KDE-full' variants for the final release." From the changelog: "Debian 'sid', as of 2007-10-29; kernel 2.6.23.1 (SMP, hard preemption); libata support for parallel ATA systems; X.Org 7.3; KDE 3.5.8 (en + de); completely new X.Org probing, finally amd64 compatible; new USB 'fromiso' installer; new artwork...." The developers of sidux, a live CD tracking the Debian unstable branch, have announced the release of sidux version 2007-03: "After less than three months of development, we are proud to announce the immediate availability of sidux 2007-03 'Gaia' for amd64 and i686 systems, shipping in a 440 MB lite KDE and a 700 MB full KDE flavors. Our third official sidux release concentrates on overhauling the SysV init sequence of the live CD, refactoring the installer backend, and laying the foundation for proper gettext localisations of our toolset, with additional efforts regarding general clean up and obsoleting the GTK+ 1.2 tools, while shipping kernel 2.6.22.3-rc1, using libata for most PATA chipsets, additional support for Intel IPW3945/4965, Realtek RTL8187 and RT2x00 wireless LAN devices has been added." The third pre-release of sidux 2007-03, a KDE live CD based on Debian's unstable branch, is ready for testing: "Leading towards the final release of sidux 2007-03 'gaia' and despite some vacancies during the holiday season, some pretty far-reaching transitions could be completed to remove hard dependencies on GTK+ 1.2, which not only required a significant amount of ISO storage, but also imposed an additional maintenance and security support burden on our toolset. Now we're proud to announce the third preview for sidux 2007-03 and are looking forward to the full-featured final release in about a week. After kernel and the new live boot infrastructure have been proved to be stable, preview 3 is now targeted at regression testing." See the release notes for a full list of changes and updates. The first preview release of sidux 2007-03, a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hard- and software support, is now ready for testing: "After some late trouble with Xdialog due to the libglib1.2ldbl transition and unscheduled downtime of debian's i386 build, we're now ready to enter the preview season leading to sidux 2007-03. This release is meant to check for potential regressions introduced by kernel 2.6.22 and the switch to libata for most parallel ATA chipsets (except VIA), to confirm kernel bugfixes introduced over the last few weeks and to test serious changes in sidux's 2nd live boot stage and other sidux core packages. As usual the preview ships only as kde-lite variant, featuring a small (430 MB), but fully functional KDE based package list, to ease up testing and xdelta uploads." The second stable version of sidux, a Debian-based distribution built by some of the former developers of KANOTIX, has been released: "After three months of development, we are proud to announce the immediate availability of sidux 2007-02 for amd64 and i686 systems, shipping in a 425 MB lite KDE and a 690 MB full KDE flavor. Our second official sidux release has concentrated on overhauling the early boot sequence and adapting to a wider variety of desktop environments and window managers. After 3 months of development, the sidux team is proud to announce the immediate availability of the sidux 2007-01, a distribution recently launched by several ex-KANOTIX developers: "This is the first official sidux release after stabilizing and largely rewriting the distribution framework, further efforts in that direction are ongoing to improve the hardware support/detection and streamline the live operations. The ISO is completely based on Debian Sid, enriched and stabilized with sidux' own packages and scripts." Read the full release announcement for more information. A new development build of sidux, a distribution launched recently by several ex-KANOTIX developers, is ready for download and testing: "We are a little late in our release schedule for sidux 2007-01 since Kernel 2.6.20 entered the stage, most of our efforts have gone into adapting sidux for the new kernel, fixing a number of smaller issues reported over the last two weeks so we would like to take the opportunity of releasing another preview to test regressions imposed by kernel 2.6.20 and to confirm fixes we cannot test ourselves. Features: amd64 and i686; Debian Sid, up-to-date as of 2007-02-13; kernel 2.6.20; KVM virtualization support for Pacifica or Vanderpool compatible CPUs; minimal, but fully functional KDE 3.5.5...."
