The UBports team have announced the release of a new major version of their mobile operating system which is a continuation of Canonical's Ubuntu Touch. The project's latest release is version 24.04 which is a long-term support (LTS) release. One of the big features in this release is the introduction of personal data encryption: "Ubuntu Touch now contains an experimental support for encrypting personal data on the device. This adds an additional layer of protection in case the device is stolen. Once enabled, your data will be encrypted using your passcode or passphrase. On boot, your device will enter a minimal UI where you'll be prompted your passcode or passphrase. Once your passcode or passphrase is entered, your device will open encrypted personal data and start the rest of the system. This feature has to be enabled per-device. To check whether this feature is enabled, go to System Settings > Security & Privacy and see if 'Encryption (Experimental)' is available." A complete list of changes is available in the project's release announcement. Supported devices and install options are listed on the project's devices page. |

The Kali Linux team have announced the launch of Kali Linux 2025.3. The distribution, which is based on Debian's Testing branch, refreshes the Nexmon wireless firmware and drops support for armel CPUs. "Nexmon is a “patched” firmware, for certain wireless chips, to extend their functionally to allow: Monitor mode - able to sniff packets; Injection mode - frame injection allows for custom raw packets to be sent, outside of the “standard” stack ordering. Both are really useful when it comes to information security! For the record, it is possible to-do both of the features above without Nexmon, as it depends on the device's chipset and drivers. Now, Nexmon supported wireless chips are Broadcom & Cypress, which are in a various devices, including the Raspberry Pi's in-built Wi-Fi! In Kali 2025.1, we changed how we package our Raspberry Pi kernel, as well as bump to a new major version. Now Nexmon support is back as well as supporting Raspberry Pi 5! Other devices can also use Nexmon, its not limited to Raspberry Pis." A more complete list of changes and new tools which have been added to Kali Linux can be found in the release announcement. The DietPi project, which produces a set of extremely lightweight Debian-based distributions designed primarily for single-board computers, has announced the release of DietPi 9.17. Based on Debian 13, the new version comes with a long list of enhancements: "The September 20rd, 2025 release of DietPi version 9.17 comes with faster and less disk space consuming DietPi backups, a Roon Server early access toggle, solved SPI storage flashing issues, and more. Our images are now shipped without ext3/ext4 journal and instead the dietpi-fs_partition_resize script creates it after the root filesystem has been expanded. This allows smaller images, but more importantly a properly located and sized journal, depending on the final root filesystem size and layout, potentially enhancing performance." The IPFire project has released a new update for its operating system for firewalls and routers. The project's new version, IPFire 2.29 Core Update 197, introduces an upgrade to OpenVPN and makes running under light loads more energy efficient. "IPFire will now by default clock down its CPUs. When previously all CPU cores have been running on full clock speed by default, we were able to keep latency to a minimum as they were always ready to process any packets. As modern processors have massively improved how quickly they can clock up and down and CPUs with many cores being widely available, we have now decided to change this based on our benchmark results. Where supported, we will use Intel P-State or otherwise fall back to the new schedutil governor which has recently been introduced into the Linux kernel and has proven to not increase any packet forwarding latency in our benchmarks. When clocked down, systems will reduce their power consumption and therefore lowering the amount of emitted heat. The cpufrequtil package which used to implement this feature has been dropped as it is no longer needed." Further details are offered through the release announcement. Clement Lefebvre has announced the availability of the beta release of Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7, the popular distribution's alternative branch, based on the recently-released Debian 13: "Linux Mint 7 comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable. Known issues: to install LMDE on an existing LVM partition you must first remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs; in manual partitioning mode, note that the installer will auto-mount all swap partitions, these partitions will also be placed in /etc/fstab in the installed system; the root account is locked by default; to use the recovery console (from the GRUB menu) or log in as root, you first need to give root a new password; VirtualBox Guest Additions - to add support for shared folders, drag and drop, proper acceleration and display resolution in VirtualBox, click on the 'Devices' menu of VirtualBox and choose 'Insert Guest Additions CD Image'. Choose 'download' when asked and follow the instructions." See the release announcement and the release notes for further details. A major update of Tails, a Debian-based portable Linux distribution that protects against surveillance and censorship, is now available. Tails 7.0 is based on the recently-released Debian 13 and includes GNOME 48: "We are very excited to present you Tails 7.0, the first version of Tails based on Debian 13 'Trixie' and GNOME 48 'Bengaluru'. Tails 7.0 brings new versions of many applications included in Tails. Tails 7.0 starts 10 – 15 seconds faster on most computers. We achieve this by changing the compression algorithm of the Tails USB and ISO images from xz to zstd. As a consequence, the image is 10% bigger than it would be with the previous algorithm. While testing this change, we noticed that Tails on USB sticks of poor quality can also start 20 seconds slower than on quality USB sticks. If you are in a place where counterfeit electronics are common, we recommend that you buy your USB stick from an international supermarket chain, which should have a more reliable supply chain. Included software: replace GNOME Terminal with GNOME Console; replace GNOME Image Viewer with GNOME Loupe; update Tor Browser to 14.5.7...." Continue to the release announcement for more information. The Fedora project has announced a new development release for Fedora 43. The new version, Fedora 43 beta, focuses on new installation methods and automatic updates across spins. "Anaconda WebUI for Fedora Spins by default - this creates a consistent and modern installation experience across all Fedora desktop variants. It brings us closer to eventually replacing the older GTK installer. This ensures all Fedora users can benefit from the same polished and user-friendly interface. Switch Anaconda installer to DNF5 - this change provides better support and debugging for package-based applications within Anaconda. It is a bigger step towards the eventual deprecation or removal of DNF4, which is now in maintenance mode. Enable auto-updates by default in Fedora Kinoite - this change ensures that users are consistently running a system with the latest bug fixes and features after a simple reboot. Updates are applied automatically in the background." Additional information can be found in the release announcement. The Murena team have announced an update to the project's mobile /e/OS platform. The new version, 3.1.1, focuses on bug fixes and minor improvements to the user experience. "Users of the new Fairphone (Gen. 6) will especially benefit, with key features like Mobile Data and VoLTE now enabled by default. The /e/OS Camera has also been enhanced to support 50 MP photos, and installation of /e/OS is now fully supported via the /e/OS Installer. Live Caption becomes more user-friendly as caption text can now be repositioned for better readability and accessibility. For families using /e/OS, Parental Control includes a crucial update. A clear warning now reminds parents to save the security code they define, as there's no way to recover it if forgotten. Third-party app compatibility has been improved on several devices, including the Fairphone 3, 4, 5 and the new Gen. 6. This ensures a smoother and more consistent app experience across these models. Good news for CMF Phone 1 users - /e/OS 3.1.1 brings key fixes that improve your daily experience. USB-C wired audio now works properly, switching between front and back cameras is smooth again, and Wi-Fi calling with sim.de is fully functional." The release announcement offers additional information. A list of supported devices and install options can be found in the project's documentation. |

The Q4OS team have published a new stable version of their lightweight, Debian-based operating system. "Q4OS 'Andromeda' is based on Debian 'Trixie' 13.1 and Plasma 6.3.6, optionally Trinity 14.1.5 desktop environment, and it's immediately available for 64-bit/x64 computers. An aarch64 edition is also planned for later. According to Debian upstream, the 32-bit/i386 'Andromeda' edition will not be available. However, we recommend using Q4OS 5 'Aquarius' for older i386 systems. We will continue to offer three years of support for the 32-bit edition of 'Aquarius' until June 2028. We intentionally keep the Plasma desktop appearance as the stock one; however, those who love Q4OS brand should switch to Q4OS's dedicated 'Debonaire' theme in the system settings. It's a simple step and you get a stylish Q4OS look-and-feel of your desktop session." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Following Debian's move to drop 32-bit x86_64 support, Q4OS 6.x is available for x86_64 machines only. Download (MD5, pkglist): q4os-6.1-x64.r1.iso (2,040MB), q4os-6.1-x64-tde.r1.iso (1,726MB). |

The Univention team have announced the release of Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 5.2-3, the third update in the 5.2 series. The new release allows for improved organization of users and computers in the organization's directory structure. "The Active Directory Connector was extended several months ago with advanced filter rules, making it easier to configure synchronization for only specific parts of the directory service. With the latest update, parent containers can now also be synchronized automatically when performing such partial synchronizations of the LDAP tree. This significantly reduces configuration effort, especially in complex, dynamic scenarios. In the Univention Directory Manager, user and computer objects can now automatically be assigned to the group stored in their 'parent container' when they are created. Previously, the default primary group could only be set globally. This new feature is the first step toward handling objects differently depending on their position in the LDAP database, and eventually also administering them with different permissions." Details can be found in the company's release announcement and in the release notes. Download: UCS_5.2-3-amd64.iso (1,589MB, SHA512, signature, pkglist). |

It is intended primarily for Basque-speaking users, although a distribution supports Spanish as well. The release announcement (in Basque) provides a list of new features: "Instead of the Maps application, it comes with the Mapa GPX-Studio web application, which in addition to preparing and exporting place marks and routes, can also be used to view various maps, including orthophotos and street view. With Mapa GPX-Studio, students can prepare excursions, mark and document points of interest, export them in GPX format and send them to a mobile phone where they can use the Comaps application. The MolView molecule viewer-editor web application now has a more functional version. We have added an application for programming Microblocks, Arduino and other boards to the new Programming applications section. We have added the LibreOffice Math equation editor. The new build continues to be available as a set of live images featuring GNOME, KDE Plasma, MATE and Xfce desktops: "We are excited to announce the release of MocaccinoOS 25.09. With this milestone, we've updated our versioning scheme to better reflect our rolling-release nature. From now on, MocaccinoOS will follow the year.month format (YY.MM). Jin Asanami has announced the release of Kamuriki Linux 4.00, a major update of the project's Debian-based Linux distribution with a classic Windows-like LXQt theme and the Wine compatibility layer for running Windows applications under Linux. The release announcement (in Japanese) divulges the second installment of the new Kamuriki, with LXQt and KWin that deliver a lightweight, but modern look and feel. The distribution comes with everything one might need to get started, including a web browser, word processor and a music player. Included in Kamuriki Linux is the Discover software centre, making it simple to install new software with a mouse. For those who prefer the command line interface, the 'nako' command is also available to efficiently manipulate software packages. Updates from version 3 are not currently supported, but the developer team promises to provide updates on the support page in the near future. While the project's website is entirely in Japanese, the distribution and the Calamares system installer also support English and several other languages. The project's SourceForge page also has some information in English. Kamuriki Linux 4.00 is available as an installation ISO image (without a live mode); here is the download (MD5) link: nrrk-400s.iso (5,556MB, pkglist). |

Nate Graham has announced the availability of the inaugural release of KDE Linux, a general-purpose Linux distribution built by the KDE project and featuring cutting-edge KDE technologies. KDE Linux comes with an immutable base system with packages from Arch Linux, while everything else is either compiled by the kde-builder tool or included as Flatpak packages. This release is considered "alpha" quality and it comes with a development snapshot of KDE Plasma 4.5. "Today I have something very exciting to share - the alpha release of KDE Linux, KDE's new operating system. KDE Linux is a new operating system intended for daily driving that showcases Plasma and KDE software in the best light, and makes use of modern technologies. Today we're releasing KDE Linux's 'Testing' edition. This edition provides unreleased KDE software built from source code, a preview of what will become the next stable release. In practice, we're being quite conservative, and it's already pretty darn stable for daily use. In fact, I've had KDE Linux on my home theater PC for about six months, and it has been on my daily driver laptop for one month." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information and known issues. KDE Linux is available as a RAW image that can be transferred to a bootable USB drive or converted to a VDI file and loaded in VirtualBox. The Linux Mint team have announced the release of Linux Mint 22.2 "Zara", an Ubuntu-based version which will receive updates through to 2029. The 22.2 release includes several new features, including new full screen options for the Hypnotix IPTV player, a version of the libAdwaita library to support themes, and artwork improvements. One of the big features is a fingerprint manager to providing authentication on computers which have a supported fingerprint reader. "Linux Mint 22.2 features a brand new XApp called Fingwit. This application is dedicated to fingerprint authentication. Fingwit detects if your computer has a fingerprint reader and lets you record your fingerprints. It then configures your system to use fingerprint authentication for: The screensaver, sudo commands, admin apps (pkexec). Note: If like most users you use home directory encryption or a keyring, the login screen still requires you to type a password. If you don't, you can configure Fingwit to also use fingerprint authentication in the login screen." Additional details are available in the project's what's new document. The AerynOS project has announced the release of AerynOS 2025.08, a new version of the project's independently-developed, rolling-release Linux distribution for general desktop use and with a custom package manager called "moss": "Closing out August 2025, we are proud to announce our third release of the year. This release follows an intense development period where the team has reevaluated its priorities and timelines, and refocused efforts on 'delivering core Linux distribution tooling that will simplify our ability to scale out over time'. We have documented some of our progress in our last two blog posts and spent the last two months further progressing towards these goals. We have implemented a basic version of virtual packages (Package Sets), continued our hardware (and VM) enablement efforts and have selectively been growing our repository where we feel it's beneficial to our users. What's new? Whilst not an exhaustive list, some of the top line repository updates include: GNOME 48.4, Plasma 6.4.4, Sway 1.11, Cosmic Alpha 7, Linux 6.15.11, Mesa 25.2.1, LLVM 20.1.8...."
