KaOS is a rolling release distribution which focuses on providing one desktop (KDE Plasma) and applications developed with one toolkit (Qt). The project's latest snapshot brings the Calligra office suite into the spotlight as well as an updated VirtualBox package. "More applications are now ready to use Qt6 and Frameworks 6, the big one now being Calligra. Since Calligra is again actively maintained and developed, it has returned to being the default office suite for KaOS. Another one that is now Qt6-based is Virtualbox. The UI of the installer has been updated for quite a few pages. This includes an option to choose either Calligra or LibreOffice as the preferred office suite. You will also see that the bootloader selection page and sound backend page are more integrated with Plasma 6 (through Kirigami). There also is now an option in the installer to install with the all-new filesystem bcachefs, it is still in experimental stage, but is included in the kernel build, and the needed bcachefs-tools are available in the repositories." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): KaOS-2024.09-x86_64.iso (3,552MB, signature, pkglist). |

Zorin OS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution designed especially for newcomers to Linux. It has a Windows-like graphical user interface and many programs similar to those found in Windows. The project has announced the release of Zorin OS 17.2 which makes it easier to install new themes, customize the look of application windows, and includes updated hardware support thanks to the Linux 6.8 kernel. "We've also made it easier to install additional themes in Zorin OS by adding a link to our new Third-Party Theme Installation Guide within Zorin Appearance. This guide also includes instructions for applying custom styling to native libadwaita apps, which is available thanks to an exclusive patch to the interface library in Zorin OS 17. You now have easy access to a plethora of settings to personalise how app windows behave on the Zorin Desktop. The new “Windows” section of Zorin Appearance has been neatly organised and thoughtfully designed to simplify changing window placement behaviour, how titlebars act, and how you can move the focus between open windows." Further information is provided in the project's release announcement. Zorin OS is available in four editions: Core, Educational, Lite and a commercial Pro flavour. The Fedora team have announced the release of a new development snapshot, Fedora 41 Beta. This development release removes Python 2, re-introduces the NVIDIA binary driver through the software centre, and upgrades the DNF package manager. "Although it can’t be part of Fedora Linux, we know that the NVIDIA binary driver is pragmatically essential for many people. Previously, NVIDIA driver installation had been removed from GNOME Software because it didn’t support Secure Boot, which is increasingly-often enabled by default on laptops. This change brings the option back for Fedora Workstation users with Secure Boot supported. This is good news for folks who want to use Fedora Linux for gaming and CUDA. The change also helps Fedora stay relevant for AI/LLVM workloads. In Fedora Linux 41, the DNF package management command will be updated to version 5. (DNF5 and bootc will be available on image-based Fedora variants such as Atomic desktops and Fedora IoT.) The new packages will make it simpler to build and update bootable container images based on these variants." Additional details can be found in the Fedora Magazine release announcement. Download (pkglist): Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-41_Beta-1.2.iso (2,279MB, SHA256), Fedora-Server-dvd-x86_64-41_Beta-1.2.iso (2,609MB, SHA256). |

For a complete list of new features and known problems, please see the online release notes and errata list.... FreeBSD 13.4-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, powerpc, powerpc64, powerpc64le, powerpcspe, armv6, armv7, aarch64, and riscv64 architectures. The MX Linux team have published an update to the distribution's 23.x series. The new version, MX Linux 23.4, includes several updates to the MX Tools suite and includes updated firmware for added hardware support. "Some highlights since our 23.3 release include: Update Xfce 4.18 core packages (Xfce ISOs and Oi respin). MX PackageInstaller now shows all installed packages in Enabled, test, and backports tabs, not just those available in a configured repo. Installed and repo version numbers are shown in table, not just tooltips. The Flatpak tab has an optional filter to show only Flathub verified Flatpaks. (MX-)live-usb-maker defaults to luks2 encryption for those making encrypted live usb devices. MX-USB-unmounter has UI improvements, plus an option to only show on tray if a removable device is inserted. pipewire-setup-mx updated to make pipewire/wireplumber startup under SysV init more reliable, especially for KDE users. MX Tweak has a KDE option to disable/enable plasma-discover's autostart systray updater notifier. AHS users have updated firmware packages (backported from Debian Sid). Fluxbox ISO now includes job-scheduler, a front end for cron (already included on other ISOs). Conky and panel should be exempt from hiding with Alt+D (show desktop). NEW • Development Release: Haiku R1 Beta 5 |
Rate this project
|
Haiku is an open-source operating system, currently in beta development, that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by the Be Operating System (BeOS), Haiku aims to become a fast, efficient, and simple to use. The project latest release, R1 Beta 5, introduces a number of performance improvements, particularly with networking, simplifies adjusting the theme, and ports several open source applications to Haiku. "Simplified color selection and 'Dark mode': Instead of displaying all 30-odd color options in the Appearance preferences and making users edit all of them, by default only three are shown, and the rest are automatically computed whenever one of these three are changed. (The full set of colours can still be edited manually, for any users that want to do that.) This new automatic color selection mode is fully 'dark mode'-aware; it will switch to using light text colours when users select dark panel background colours, and vice versa. In addition, there were many fixes throughout the system and in built-in applications to handle user-selected colours and 'dark mode' more correctly (especially as regards control gradients, as you can see here; though some of these are already not an issue if one uses the 'Flat' decorator and control look from the 'Haiku Extras' package)." Additional information is provided in the Haiku release notes. Download (SHA256): haiku-r1beta5-x86_64-anyboot.iso (1,408MB, torrent, pkglist). |

Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. Version 2024.3 of the distribution offers support for Qualcomm Snapdragon SDM845 SoC and includes eleven new tools. This distribution also begins the work on migrating to a new, significant Python update. "The summary of the changelog since the 2024.2 release from June is: Qualcomm NetHunter Pro Devices - Qualcomm Snapdragon SDM845 SoC now supported; new Tools - 11x new tools in your arsenal. Our focus has been on a lot of behind the scenes updates and optimizations since the last release. There have been some messy migrations, with multiple stacks, all interrelating. After the t64 transition finished up, it was straight into multiple other transitions - GCC 14, glibc 2.40 and Python 3.12. This last one is the most significant. This new Python release removed some long-deprecated APIs, breaking a fair number of packages. We have been busy fixing it all, we are almost there, Python 3.12 will be the default in the next version of Kali, 2024.4." Additional information is provided in the release announcement.
