FreeSBIE - FreeBSD Live CD
FreeSBIE was a live system on CD, or an operating system that was able to load directly from a bootable CD, without any installation process, without any hard disk. It's based on the FreeBSD operating system. FreeSBIE project goals are mainly two: to develop a suite of programs to be used to create your own CD, with all the personalisations you like, and to make various ISO images available, maybe each one with different goals and possible uses. The project was developed by the main Italian FreeBSD User Group: GUFI.

The Linux Mint team have announced the launch of a new version of the project's Debian-based branch. The new version 6 (codename "Faye") of Linux Mint Debian Edition offers most of the same technology as Linux Mint's main, Ubuntu-based branch, but using Debian "Stable" as the core operating system. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Known issues: to install LMDE on an existing LVM partition you must first remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs; in manual partitioning mode, note that the installer will auto-mount all swap partitions, these partitions will also be placed in /etc/fstab in the installed system." Zephix 7 is based on Debian 12 and it is available as a set of pre-built desktop modules with several popular desktop environments: "Zephix 7 was released with major enhancements. KaOS is a rolling release, desktop distribution which is independently developed. The project places a strong focus on providing KDE/Qt software, running on the Plasma desktop. The latest snapshot of KaOS, version 2023.09, will likely be the penultimate release shipping with Plasma 5. "It is with great pleasure to present to you the September release of a new stable ISO. As you will note in this release announcement, work in KaOS is really shifting toward Plasma 6. This ISO is still Plasma 5 based and includes all the latest updates, but Plasma 5 & Qt5 are not where upstream development is anymore. The Fedora project has announced a new beta release of the Red Hat-sponsored distribution. The new beta snapshot, Fedora 39 Beta, is a relatively minor upgrade with a number of proposals (such as an upgrade for the DNF package manager) not completing in time to make it into this release. Peropesis (personal operating system) is a small-scale, minimalist, command-line-based Linux operating system. The project has published a minor update to its 2.x series. Peropesis 2.2 feautres five new additions to its default package along with several updates. The release announcement states: "Peropesis 2.2 Linux OS is released. Univention Corporate Server is an enterprise-class distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. The distribution has received a minor update, Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 5.0-5 which introduces new functionality to the management console along with a number of bug fixes. "Univention Corporate Server 5.0-5 is the fifth point release for Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 5.0. It contains all erratas released since version 5.0-4 for bug fixes, performance improvements and security updates for Samba, Linux, OpenSSH, Bind and Python, among others. UCS 5.0-5 is available in the 'Software Update' module and can be found in our download area. In total, the new point release includes 28 security updates that we have provided since the last UCS point release, such as those for Samba, Linux, OpenSSH, Bind, and Python. We have also implemented various bug fixes in the Univention Management Console (UMC) environment and upgraded some UMC modules to the new capabilities that have been available with the UMC server since the fundamental change from UCS 5.0-4. In the future, we will be able to significantly reduce the memory consumption of UMC during operation in certain cases. Also worth mentioning is the new option of explicitly setting an empty value or deleting the value in the UMC module for the Univention Config Registry (UCR)." Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with the steps necessary to build your own custom Linux system. The project has published Linux From Scratch 12.0 and a corresponding Beyond Linux From Scratch which offers tips for extending the operating system. The release announcement mentions key new upgrades: "This release is a major update to both LFS and BLFS. The LFS release includes updates to binutils-2.41, gcc-13.2.0, and glibc-2.38. In total, 38 packages were updated since the last release. The Linux kernel has also been updated to version 6.4.12. Other significant changes include: Addition of libxcrypt as a separate package. Previously this package was included with glibc. For the sysV version of the book, udev is now extracted directly from the systemd tarball. This change also requires building the Python modules jinja and markupsafe. The new package pkgconf is now used instead of pkg-config because the later packages is no longer maintained.
