PelicanHPC GNU Linux
PelicanHPC is a Debian-based live CD image with a goal to make it simple to set up a high performance computing cluster. The front-end node (either a real computer or a virtual machine) boots from the CD image. The compute nodes boot by Pre-Execution Environment (PXE), using the front-end node as the server. All of the nodes of the cluster get their file systems from the same CD image, so it is guaranteed that all nodes run the same software. The CD image is created by running a single script, which makes it possible to customise the live CD image with extra Debian packages.

The Fedora team have announced a new development snapshot of their popular Linux distribution. Fedora 35 Beta ships with GNOME 41 with an updated software manager, and utilities to improve laptop battery life. "Fedora 35 Workstation Beta includes GNOME 41, the newest release of the GNOME desktop environment. GNOME 41 includes a redesigned Software application that makes it easier to find and install the tools you need. And now when you enable third-party repositories during installation, you’ll get access to flatpaks from Flathub to supplement the Fedora repository. Fedora 35 Workstation also includes power-profiles-daemon, which allows you to choose between optimizing for system performance or battery life. New in this release is Fedora Kinoite—a KDE Plasma environment based on rpm-ostree technology. Like Fedora Silverblue, Kinoite provides atomic updates and an immutable operating system for increased reliability. Fedora Linux 35 builds on the switch to PipeWire for managing audio by introducing WirePlumber as the default session manager. WirePlumber enables customization of rules for routing streams to and from devices." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. NEW • Distribution Release: Q4OS 4.6 |

Q4OS is a lightweight, Debian-based distribution featuring the KDE Plasma and Trinity desktops. The project's latest version is Q4OS 4.6 which is based on Debian 11 "Bullseye". One of the project's aims is to allow both desktops to be installed alongside each other, a rare feature given the shared history of the two desktops. "Q4OS Gemini is based on Debian Bullseye 11 and Plasma 5.20, optionally Trinity 14.0.10 desktop environment, and it's available for 64bit/x64 and 32bit/i686pae computers, as well as for older i386 systems without PAE extension. We are working hard to bring it for ARM devices as well. Desktop profiler, an exclusive Q4OS tool, has custom profiles support now, so a user can export the current desktop status snapshot, modify it and even create customized profiles on his own. Any profile is importable, so a user can import and apply it later on another hardware, getting a unique possibility of easy installation and configuration of the pre-defined set of applications and packages at once. In other words, a user easily gets a fresh operating system installation configured and ready to work with a minimal post installation effort. In addition, each desktop environment may keep its own applications profiles." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (MD5) (pkglist): q4os-4.6-x64.r1.iso (1,260MB), q4os-4.6-x64-tde.r1.iso (1,020MB). |

NEW • BSD Release: MidnightBSD 2.1.0 |

Lucas Holt has announced the release of MidnightBSD 2.1.0, the latest stable build of the project's FreeBSD-derived operating system for desktops: "I am happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 2.1 for amd64 and i386. This is an incremental release focusing on bug fixes, improvements to the package manager and a new system compiler. LLVM updated to 10.0.1, mport 2.1.4. The majority of improvements come from the MidnightBSD package manager, mport. A number of long-standing bugs have been fixed. It now can update dependencies properly on install, update or upgrade scenarios. Previously, it would sometimes crash and force the user to do it manually. Several fixes have been made around PLIST processing. The mport utility now sets a character encoding so that extracting files with libarchive with special characters is more likely to work properly without a crash occurring. (lang/go port is a fun trigger of this bug). The libmport library no long relies on libdispatch. This is slower in a few scenarios, but most invocations are now faster as it doesn't need to setup the thread pools or do the locking it once did." NEW • Distribution Release: UBports 16.04 OTA-19 |

|
The UBports team has announced a new version of the project's mobile operating system. The project, which continues the work of Ubuntu Touch, has published a new update: UBports 16.04 OTA-19. This release fixes a number of small issues and annoyances which occurred when messaging and connecting to wireless networks. "As we went for the messaging app´s auto-popup of the keyboard we also fixed a few other annoyances around the messaging app and it´s keyboard handling, which would in fact prevent popping up the keyboard when it was needed. Seems the messaging app was not too eager about writing messages. The WiFi negotiation should now prevent unnecessary password dialogs if the connection cannot be established immediately. This reduces the annoying pop-up and also creation of multiple entries labeled (1) (2) etc for the same SSID. Let´s talk about audio bugs and media hub: First we fixed a situation that prevented to put music on pause when the headphone cable has been removed and rather continued playback through the device´s main speaker, quite annoying. Then we fixed a bug in media-hub which put the device to sleep after the first piece of music was played, resulting in a very choppy and broken playback of all music pieces thereafter. Also the display went dark when playing remote media that contained video information only, since media-hub did believe its audio only. " Additional information about these changes and other improvements can be found in the release announcement. A list of supported devices and download options can be found on the project's Devices page. |

Emmabuntüs is a desktop Linux distribution with editions based on Debian's "stable" branch with the Xfce and LXQt desktop environments. The project has published a new version which is based on Debian 11 "Bullseye". "On September 20th 2021, the Emmabuntüs Collective is happy to announce the release of the new Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 4 1.00 (32 and 64 bits), based on the Debian 11.0 Bullseye distribution and supporting both XFCE and LXQt desktop environments. This distribution was originally designed to facilitate the reconditioning of computers donated to humanitarian organizations, starting with the Emmaüs communities (which is where the distribution’s name obviously comes from), to promote the discovery of GNU/Linux by beginners, as well as to extend the lifespan of computer hardware, in order to reduce the waste induced by the over-consumption of raw materials. This update of our new distribution takes up the basis of Emmabuntüs DE3 under Debian 11 Bullseye, and its latest changes concerning the removal of proprietary software in favour of free alternatives, like DWService replacing Teamviewer, Jami replacing Skype and the complete deletion of Adobe Flash. This version exhibits the new Ice graphic theme created by Juliette Taka, the graphic artist who realized numerous wallpapers for Debian, as well as a renovated logo." The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release introduces a number of polishing touches to the user interface. In particular, the system does a better job of checking to see if a Tor connection is possible and is more forgiving of slow network connections. "Reduce the timeout that determines whether we can connect to Tor at all from 30 seconds to 10 seconds. Increase the timeout to start Tor entirely from 120 seconds to 600 seconds. Tor Connection now fails quicker when it's impossible to connect to Tor, while being more robust on slow Internet connections. Allow trying again to connect to Tor from the error screen. Unsafe Browser: Stop restarting Tor when exiting the Unsafe Browser. Only mention the Persistent Storage in the Unsafe Browser warning when there is already a Persistent Storage. Others: Make sure that automatic upgrades are downloaded from a working mirror." Additional information can be found in the release announcement for Tails 4.22. Finnix is a small, self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution for system administrators, based on Debian. The project's latest release is Finnix 123 which is based on Debian 11. The new release provides the option of setting OpenSSH credentials at boot time, FTP client packages have been removed, the jove package has been installed, and the command line will now try to suggest available packages the user can install when a command is not found. "Today marks the release of Finnix 123, the LiveCD for system administrators. Expanding on Finnix 122 from six months ago, this release includes a number of fixes, new packages and new features. From the Finnix 123 release notes: Added kernel command line 'sshd' and 'passwd' options, example: 'sshd passwd=foo', 'sshd passwd=root:foo passwd=finnix:bar'. The machine ID is now, when possible, stable across reboots and being generated from the DMI. This is used for e.g. the DHCP client ID, so multiple reboots should no longer cycle through dynamic IPs on a network. The finnix command now has instructions for how to enable ZFS support. Added a basic command-not-found handler; e.g. trying ftp will point out lftp, and will provide instructions for installing if desired explicitly. Added manpages for Finnix-specific commands (wifi-connect, locale-config, etc). Added packages: jove. Removed packages: ftp, ftp-ssl, zile." This version has been completely recompiled in OpenEmbedded, a build framework for embedded Linux: "There has been a complete recompile in OpenEmbedded, with some package version upgrades. Also, SeaMonkey has been upgraded to 2.53.9 and the Linux kernel to 5.10.61. Note, when I do a complete rebuild in OE, I bump the 'revision number', in this case from "r3" to "r4" - this is in the package names, note also, 'nocona' is the earliest x86_64 instruction set. Changes that usually go unannounced, I sometimes replace Busybox applets with the full versions, from 'coreutils' or 'util-linux', when I encounter an error due to the Busybox applet not supporting the required commandline options." Bruce Dubbs has announced the release of Linux From Scratch (LFS) 11.0, the latest version of the project's book that provides step-by-step instructions of building a Linux system from source code: "The Linux From Scratch community announces the release of LFS version 11.0. The reason for the major release number increment is that this version no longer uses the 'split-user' system. That is, like most current distributions, /bin is a symbolic link to /usr/bin. Likewise, /lib and /sbin are both symbolic links to their /usr counterparts. Additional major changes include toolchain updates to GCC 11.2.0, glibc 2.34, and Binutils 2.37. The Linux kernel has also been updated to version 5.13.12. In total, 40 packages were updated since the last release. Changes to the text have also been made throughout the book. In coordination with this release, a new version of LFS using the systemd package is also being released. This package implements the newer systemd style of system initialization and control and is consistent with LFS in most packages." Visit the project' news page to read the full release announcement.
