AerynOS is an independently-developed, rolling-release Linux distribution designed for general desktop use. The project has published a new snapshot, version 2025.10, which updates its three desktop environments (GNOME, COSMIC and Plasma). This snapshot also reverts the C++ library from LLVM to the GNU implementation. "The GNOME packaging team has updated our GNOME environment to 49.1. The team has also expanded the number of available GNOME packages in our repository, and we now include Showtime and GNOME-contacts in our GNOME pkgsets accordingly. For clarity, these were added in September but were not mentioned in our previous blog post. GNOME continues to work very well on AerynOS and remains as our default live installation environment. Reilly Brogan has done a fantastic job landing KDE Plasma 6.5, KDE Gear 25.08.2 and KDE Frameworks 6.19.0 into our repository over the last month. The overall KDE Plasma experience continues to improve with users providing largely very positive feedback on its performance and fluidity on AerynOS. Over the last couple of months, KDE Plasma has now also been promoted as a recommended installation option alongside GNOME." Additional details can be found in this blog post. Norman Feske has announced the release of Sculpt OS 25-10, the latest version of the project's independently-developed open-source operating system that combines a microkernel architecture, capability-based security, sandboxed device drivers, and virtual machines in a novel operating system for commodity PC hardware and the PinePhone: "Sculpt OS 25.10 improves performance, updates device drivers, and accepts a new human-readable configuration format. In the light of this year's roadmap focus on rigidity, clarity, performance, Sculpt OS 25.10 looks the same as the version 25.04 but might feel different as it includes countless under-the-hood improvements of the two preceding framework releases 25.05 and 25.08. User interaction on performance-starved platforms like the PinePhone has become visibly smoother thanks to our recent CPU scheduling advances. The streamlined block-storage stack combined with various refinements of the package-installation mechanism make the on-target installation of 3rd-party components a bliss. Regarding supported hardware, we steadily follow the tireless work of the Linux kernel community. All PC driver components using Linux kernel code are now consistently based on kernel version 6.12." Here is the brief release announcement. Sculpt OS 25-10 is available for download as an IMG file: sculpt-25-10.img (34.9MB, signature). |

An updated build of Besgnulinux, a lightweight Debian-based distribution featuring the JWM window manager, has been released. The 3-1 version comes with a new and modern desktop menu, and a smaller set of software packages in its default state: "In this version, the base design was kept as it was, but many changes were made. Some regularly-added software has been removed from the system upon request. The ISO image file has been reduced to around 2,500 megabytes. LibreOffice, Inkscape, Games, Printer are some of the software that will not install. The installation of these software is left to the user's discretion. The ability to add items to the menu has been adapted. Users can add or remove items from the menu. A relatively modern menu has been added to the JWM menu. An image of this menu, called App Finder, can be seen below. A second menu is not required, it's simply for user preference. Another significant change is the change to the default file manager. The latest version of the PCManFM file manager, which we've been using for years, is riddled with bugs. Therefore, it has been replaced by the Nemo file manager. Nemo works well with JWM and is quite lightweight, consuming an average of 25 MB of memory. This time, the desktop is active. Spacefm is managing the desktop." See the rest of the release announcement for further details and screenshots. Download (MD5): besgnulinux-jwm-3-1-amd64.iso (2,377MB, pkglist). |

Kyle Gospodnetich has announced the release of Bazzite 43, a major update of the project's Fedora-based immutable distribution designed for gamers, with a choice of GNOME or KDE Plasma desktops. This release adds support for several new handheld gaming devices, including Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X, Legion Go 2, OneXPlayer X1 Air and SuiPlay0X1: "Today's update brings Bazzite up to Fedora 43, with new device support and under-the-hood fixes from our team. This update adds full support for the Xbox Ally, mirroring the one we have for the original Ally and Ally X units (RGB, fan curves, back buttons). For this to happen, we had to coordinate with AMD to fix sleep (as it uses the same chip as the Steam Deck), tweak the amplifier driver to drive these new amazing speakers, and fix some RGB quirks caused by the dynamic lighting feature in Windows. This support extends to the new Ally X unit as well. However, this unit features an even more powerful dual amplifier speaker setup, and we find some of you have clipping at above 80% volume. We are waiting a reply from the Texas Instruments (the company that made the amplifier) maintainers about this, so until then, exercise some restraint and stay at around 80% volume." Read the full release announcement for further details. TrueNAS 25.10.0, a specialist, Debian-based Linux distribution designed for NAS (network-attached storage) computers, has been released. This major new version introduces the NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) protocol and OpenZFS 2.3.4 performance improvements: "Building on the success of TrueNAS 25.04 'Fangtooth', we’re proud to release TrueNAS 25.10 'Goldeye' to deliver a powerful and user-friendly experience, cutting-edge features for enhanced performance, and simplified operations. TrueNAS 25.10 breaks free from the limitations of traditional storage protocols with NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) support. NVMe-oF enables direct, high-speed access to data stored on remote arrays, effectively letting you treat storage on your TrueNAS 25.10 system as if it was a locally attached NVMe device. By removing the protocol overhead inherent in older block protocols like iSCSI and Fibre Channel, you can unlock unprecedented levels of I/O performance and significantly reduce latency. TrueNAS 25.10 integrates the latest fixes available in the OpenZFS filesystem, with a suite of substantial enhancements crucial for optimizing data management and system performance." Jef Spaleta has announced the launch of Fedora 43. The key highlights of the new release are a new system installer which was tested in the Workstation edition of Fedora 42 and is now available for all spins, and Wayland-only sessions on the Workstation edition. "There are, however, a few notable user visible changes in this release. For those of you installing fresh Fedora Linux 43 Spins, you may be greeted with the new Anaconda WebUI. This was the default installer interface for Fedora Workstation 42, and now it's the default installer UI for the Spins as well. If you are a GNOME desktop user, you'll also notice that the GNOME is now Wayland-only in Fedora Linux 43. GNOME upstream has deprecated X11 support, and has disabled it as a compile time default in GNOME 49. Upstream GNOME plans to fully remove X11 support in GNOME 50. Beyond the user-visible changes, there are a couple of significant bits of plumbing that should go unnoticed for most users but are a big deal, nonetheless. Fedora Linux 43 will be the first release with RPM 6.0." Additional information is presented in the release announcement and in the release notes. The MX Linux team has announced the availability of the first release candidate for MX Linux 25, the upcoming major release of the project's Debian-based Linux distribution with user-friendly enhancements and the Xfce desktop (with Fluxbox and KDE Plasma variants also provided). Departing from its non-systemd stand in the past, MX Linux 25 now comes with the systemd service manager by default, although SysV variants are still available. "MX Linux 25 RC1 is now available for testing. MX Linux 25 is built from Debian 13 'Trixie' and MX Linux repositories. All releases come with systemd. For those that want them, the Xfce, Xfce-AHS, and Fluxbox releases are also available in SysV variants. SysV ISO images are clearly labeled as such in the file name. The reasons for this change from past versions are in this blog post. With this RC1, we are particularly interested in testing the installer, including traditional ext4 and Btrfs installations. Major changes since beta 1 include: inclusion of systemd-cryptsetup on systemd ISO images (fixes an issue with encrypted /home); work-around for GRUB display issue on older Intel graphics hardware...." Pablo Arreche has announced the release of a brand-new version of Planeta Tecno OS, a Uruguayan Linux distribution based on Debian 12, with MATE as the default desktop and a variety of artificial intelligence tools integrated into the desktop. "Today we officially present an improved version of Planeta Tecno OS 7. It brings many updates to performance, interface, tools (including a brand-new launch). These new features are based on the various tests I've conducted and also on the contributions made by the community through comments, reviews, information and queries via this website, the YouTube channel and our social media accounts. Therefore, this is a version that, more than ever, is based on user requests and needs. Below I'll discuss the main changes and their motivations. The first thing you notice when you log in is the new environment. For the first time, we're leaving Xfce and switching to MATE, which is, of course, quite customized. The reason for the change? There are several factors, but we can summarize them as follows: performance - the overall system speed and responsiveness are noticeable; lightness - lower RAM usage in idle mode and also when under heavy workload...." Clonezilla Live is a Debian-based distribution for duplicating and restoring disk images and partitions. The distribution has published an update to its Stable branch which includes a new kernel with new hardware support and updates to its key utilities. "The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2025/Oct/17). The Linux kernel was updated to 6.16.12-1. Partclone was updated to 0.3.38, which includes a fix for a btrfs-related issue. Added a new program, ocs-blkdev-sorter, which allows udev to create Clonezilla alias block devices in /dev/ocs-disks/. This is used by the udev rule 99-ocs-sorted-disks.rules. Added the "-uoab" option to ocs-sr and ocs-live-feed-img to support selecting Clonezilla alias block device names in the TUI. This experimental feature addresses the random ordering of kernel block devices and can currently only be enabled via a command-line parameter. Improved the performance of ocs-get-dev-info. Improved ocs-blk-dev-info to ensure 'jq' works correctly in some cases and to increase efficiency. Added ocs-cmd-screen-sample, which can be used with the "run again" script. It works with screen, tmux, and the console." Additional details can be found in the distribution's release announcement. Download (MD5): clonezilla-live-3.3.0-33-amd64.iso (476MB, pkglist). |

The developers of Peppermint OS, a minimalist, Debian-based Linux distribution with Xfce as the preferred desktop, have announced the release of a new Peppermint OS build, now based on Debian 13: "We are very happy to announce the release of Peppermint OS 'Flagship' based on Debian 'Trixie'. The flagship Peppermint OS is an Xfce desktop that lets you choose the applications you need. This keeps your system efficient and uncluttered. It is 64-bit, featuring the familiar Peppermint experience with only the essentials pre-installed. Changes: added icon recognition in pftech, it display the icon theme name; removed the transition message from fetching to pfetch; upgraded Calamares to use Qt 6 and well as QML 6; the 'Suggested Packages' GUI was adjusted to use switch toggles to install applications, no more terminal interaction; the community requested to have the Brave browser added, as an option in the Browsers category for install in 'Suggested Packages'; the base operating system is now Debian 'Trixie', all of those updates and changes have been applied; the new feature introduced in hBlock version 3.5.1 is the addition of the ability to retry multiple times when running; this is controlled via the new options -n or --retry which allow hBlock to attempt its operation multiple times in case of failure or interruption." Tony George has announced the release of Asmi Linux 25.10, the latest version of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution that uses a highly customised Xfce desktop with a plethora of user-friendly touches. "Asmi Linux 25.10 is now available, based on Ubuntu 25.10. Highlights: based on Ubuntu 25.10 'Questing Quokka'; Xfce 4.20 desktop; Linux kernel 6.17. Note: Ubuntu 25.10 will reach end of life (EOL) in July 2026. If you are doing a new installation, it is recommended to use Asmi 24.04 as it is more mature and stable." The release announcement also highlights changes, improvements and known issues in the release: "You can now save and load your own desktop layouts using the Asmi Settings app; Thunar's toolbar and titlebar was updated for a better look. The titlebar uses CSD to save vertical space while still keeping the menu bar. Known issues: Flatpaks are broken on Ubuntu 25.10 due an issue with AppArmor profiles; SSH-Agent does not display a GUI password prompt; setting the wallpaper does not work sometimes in Thunar and Ristretto, you can use one of the commands below to set the wallpaper manually. As a workaround, a context menu entry was added to Thunar that you can use to set the wallpaper." Celebrating 20 years of the project, Amy Eickmeyer announced the availability of Edubuntu 25.10 earlier today. As an official Ubuntu flavour, Edubuntu brings the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open-source education software into the classroom. "We are happy and proud to release the 25.10 version of Edubuntu for your continued enjoyment and learning. This release includes GNOME 49. Geary has been replaced with Thunderbird which is used in Ubuntu as a feature-complete email, calendar, and contacts suite. The disadvantage is that it doesn't integrate well with the GNOME desktop via GNOME Online Accounts; however, during testing, we ran into problems with the latest versions of Geary and Evolution when it came to Microsoft 365 accounts, which are in use in a great deal of schools. GNOME Music has been replaced with Rhythmbox. This is because GNOME Music has ceased development. This release includes some additional educational games. We worked with Jonny Eickmeyer, our lead student advisor, to research games that already existed within our repository, and added them to the default installation! You may even notice gm-assistant has been added. This is an application to assist, for example, 'Dungeons & Dragons' dungeon masters with facilitating a game." The Ubuntu Studio team has announced the release of Ubuntu Studio 25.10. The release, which offers nine months of security updates, also introduces a few new applications and updated PipeWire support: "This release contains PipeWire 1.4.7. PipeWire's JACK compatibility is configured to use out-of-the-box and is zero-latency internally. System latency is configurable via Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration and can now be configured on a per-user basis instead of globally. Speaking of Audio Configuration, we have added a number of options for configuring the PipeWire JACK compatibility, as can be seen in the image below. Additionally, buffer size can now be configured from within any JACK application that supports it, such as Patchance, Carla, Ardour, and more! Ardour 8.12 - This is, as of this writing, the latest release of Ardour, packed with the latest bugfixes. To help support Ardour’s funding, you may obtain later versions directly from ardour.org. To do so, please one-time purchase or subscribe to Ardour from their website. If you wish to get later versions of Ardour from us, you will have to wait until the next release of Ubuntu Studio, due in April 2026." The Kubuntu project has announced the availability of Kubuntu 25.10. The new release runs Plasma 6.4, uses a Wayland session by default, and introduces Rust-based core utilities. "Here are three standout enhancements that Kubuntu 25.10 brings to your desktop, designed to make your workflow faster, more secure, and visually stunning: KDE Plasma 6.4, a refined and responsive desktop dive into the fifth feature release of Plasma 6, complete with Qt 6.8 and Frameworks 6.17.0. This update refines the desktop with smoother animations, improved widget customization, and better multi-monitor handling. It's a big win for productivity, letting you tailor your environment like never before while enjoying the stability of Ubuntu's core. Plasma Wayland as default session, say goodbye to legacy X11 limitations - Wayland is now the go-to session for superior graphics rendering, reduced latency, and enhanced security. With hardware-accelerated compositing baked in, you'll notice snappier video playback and app responsiveness. (X11 fans, no worries: it's still available via a simple package install.) This shift future-proofs your setup for the next era of Linux desktops. Rust-powered sudo-rs for safer system management leveraging Ubuntu's new memory-safe implementations, Kubuntu defaults to sudo-rs, a Rust-based re-implementation of sudo. The Lubuntu team have announced the release of Lubuntu 25.10, which is a community edition of Ubuntu featuring the LXQt desktop. The new release provides nine months of security updates and runs the LXQt 2.2 desktop. "LXQt 2.2 is now shipped by default. More information on its release can be found here. Starting in Ubuntu 25.10, Ubuntu now uses the uutils Rust implementation of Coreutils in place of the standard GNU Coreutils. uutils is intended to be fully GNU-compatible, but reimplements the entire suite of OS components in Rust, providing better memory safety and (hopefully) more robust code where the OS needs it most. As with any major change, this is not entirely without risk, and it is possible that users could see core system tools behave differently than they used to. If you notice a core system utility break or behave differently than expected, please file a bug report against rust-coreutils. Note that findutils and diffutils have not been replaced with their Rust equivalents from uutils yet. The find, xargs and diff commands are still the original GNU variants, written in C." The Xubuntu team has published version 25.10 of their distribution. The new release offers nine months of support and runs the Xfce 4.20 desktop, along with components from other desktop environments. "The Xubuntu team is happy to announce the immediate release of Xubuntu 25.10. Xubuntu 25.10, code-named 'Questing Quokka', is a regular release and will be supported for 9 months, until July 2026. Xubuntu 25.10 features the latest Xfce 4.20 and GNOME 49 updates. Xfce 4.20 updates feature stability improvements and enhanced Wayland support, for those adventurous enough to use it. GNOME 49 apps have received further polish and are well-suited for Xubuntu. MATE 1.26 apps are still included to round out Xubuntu's office suite. Known issues: some missing icons mean that libadwaita apps (modern GNOME style) have graphical glitches, notably the window close icons are blank and Document Scanner is missing an icon for the scanner options; the graphical SSH agent is unavailable due to a change in the GNOME Keyring Daemon; Flatpak packages will refuse to install due to a conflict between AppArmor and libfuse, a fix is in progress." Arne Exton has announced the availability of a new "PuppEX" release of Exton Linux. The project's newest PuppEX is based on the long-term supported Ubuntu 24.04 and uses a recent 6.16 Linux kernel. "This Puppy Linux derivative is made by me. It is built from Ubuntu 24.04 'Noble Numbat' packages and packages built from woof-CE Recipes. I've also compiled a brand new kernel, 6.16.9. This is possibly one of the best PuppEX builds I've ever made. Everything just works. I could run the system very well on all of my six different computers. Among them on a really old Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from 2006. Note: Ubuntu 24.04 will be supported until April 2029. Note also that you can use the apt command (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage) and Synaptic for installing thousands of new Ubuntu packages in PuppEX Noble64. I've installed NVIDIA's proprietary driver 580.82.09. That's because I could not get X.Org to work on one of my computers with the new RTX 4060 NVIDIA card in any other way. The driver will be used if you have a relatively new NVIDIA card. If the card isn't automatically recognized after boot, you should run the 'xorgwizard' command. When choosing a card you should go for 'Auto'. After that restart X.Org and you will hopefully enter the desktop as root." Here is the full release announcement. Andreas Mueller has announced the release of Gnoppix AI Linux 25_10, which features the KDE Plasma desktop. This release focuses heavily on performance and privacy, while also introducing a major overhaul to the user experience and new community features. We've tackled the issue of needing manual tweaks for optimal performance head-on. We've incorporated system and performance patches directly into the operating system. You no longer need to manually install or apply these critical fixes they are now included by default. Enhanced gaming experience - this change significantly impacts gaming. With Steam and Lutris, many Windows games now run exceptionally well, with some titles even performing faster than they do on Windows. This release also include a new system installer and provide parallel package downloads: "Leap 16 as a community-supported platform will shape open-source development breakthroughs and real-world solutions in the years ahead. The release is 2038 safe and comes with 32-bit (ia32) support disabled by default. It gives users the option to enable it manually and enjoy gaming with Steam, which still relies on 32-bit libraries. The hardware requirements have changed. Leap 16 now requires x86-64-v2 as a minimum CPU architecture level, which generally means CPUs bought in 2008 or later. Users with older hardware can migrate to Slowroll or Tumbleweed. Leap 16 channels community and enterprise distribution code by building on the foundation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), bringing source and binary identicality with it. Users have the option to seamlessly migrate from openSUSE Leap 16 to SLES 16. Developers can use openSUSE Leap to create, test and run workloads for later deployment on SLES. Leap 16 ships with the new Agama installer, which offers a more modern setup experience over the deprecated YaST-based installer." Additional details can be found in the release announcement.
