Garuda Linux is a rolling distribution based on the Arch Linux operating system. The project has published a new snapshot which facilitates the handling of updates and streamlines the distribution's install media. "As of now, garuda-update should be able to handle any conflict that recently occurred mostly due to the already mentioned Arch package name changes. In case you missed it, please read the announcement to understand what is going on. Furthermore, it applies the Archlinux repo migration which happened since our last release, and fixes a few more update potential update blockers. For everyone still using 'pacman -Syu' without being able to work around issues like this manually, please ensure always using garuda-update as it was made exactly for this purpose  A few editions have been dropped from our line-up. The reason behind this is quite simple - they are not getting necessary maintenance or are missing a maintainer. The logical choice is to no longer offer them to the public." Additional details and highlights are presented in the project's release announcement. GhostBSD is a FreeBSD-based operating system with a focus on desktop computing. The project's latest release introduces a kernel update and a number of networking improvements, along with minor changes. "I am pleased to announce the release of GhostBSD 23.10.1. This version might look odd from previous releases, but it is correct. After more thought into it, the base OS is not updated as much as the software packages. So, I decided to change the release version back to a static one instead of changing it on each software package update. Software packages will be updated as often as possible, like before, and if there are significant issues, changes or security issues before 24.01.1, a 23.10.2 release will be created. See the roadmap for future releases. In this release, the FreeBSD base system and kernel have been updated to 1302508, and it contains software updates, some improvements to Update Station, and new features to NetworkMgr. Also, os-generic-userland-devtools has been removed from the default installation to downsize the live system image." The release announcement offers additional details. The OpenBSD team have announced the release of OpenBSD 7.4, the latest version of the project's security-focused operating system. The new version includes a lot of virtual machine improvements, better SMP performance, wireless networking updates and an interesting random timing feature for the cron daemon. "In cron(8) and crontab(5), add support for random offsets when using ranges with a step value in cron. This extends the random range syntax to support step values. Instead of choosing a random number between the high and low values, the field is treated as a range with a random offset less than the step value. This can be used to avoid thundering herd problems where multiple machines contact a server all at the same time via cron jobs. Extend and improve the ibuf API in libutil and add functions for more specific data types, for modifying data at specific offsets, for getting and setting the file descriptor stored on the ibuf and for efficient wrapping of ibufs into imsgs. The ibuf API is mostly used in network daemons. In wsconsctl(8), add button mappings for two- and three-finger clicks on clickpads. In pax(1) and tar(1), do not open files that will be skipped, speeding up archive creation when many files are skipped." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Lubuntu is a community edition of Ubuntu which features the LXQt desktop environment. The project's latest release, Lubuntu 23.10, uses the Calamares system installer while other branches of the Ubuntu family typically use Ubiquity. "We are once again utilizing Calamares 3.3 Alpha 2 in Lubuntu 23.10, as it has proven to be highly reliable since its initial use in Lubuntu 22.10. During testing, we did note that if you attempt to create an encrypted installation without a passphrase, Lubuntu will be installed unencrypted. This is unlikely to be a problem for most users as disk encryption requires a passphrase for it to be effective. More information can be found here. Press Enter and the system will reboot into the installed environment. Xorg crashes and the user is logged out after logging in or switching users on some virtual machines, including GNOME Boxes. You may experience choppy audio or poor system performance while playing audio, but only in some virtual machines (observed in VMware and VirtualBox)." The release notes offer additional details. Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia-focused community edition of Ubuntu. The project's 23.10 release places a focus on improving PipeWire support and audio configuration. "PipeWire has gained numerous improvements, including fixes for prosumer and professional audio. The JACK compatibility now performs in real-time, and some FireWire features have now been implemented. We also include a new utility, called the Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration utility, found in the Ubuntu Studio Information menu. This can be used to configure the default PipeWire Quantum value, Enable or Disable the PipeWire-JACK compatibility layer (handy for using JACK by itself), or switch to the classic PulseAudio-JACK setup that was the default prior to 23.04. QPrompt is a Qt-based teleprompter application now available in the repositories. While a snap version does exist and is installable from Discover, the version in the repositories is more up-to-date. Since Discover does not see the version in the repositories, it needs to be installed from the command line by issuing the following command: 'sudo apt install qprompt'." Additional information is offered in the release announcement and in the release notes. Download: ubuntustudio-23.10-dvd-amd64.iso (5,446MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Canonical has released a new version of Ubuntu. The new version, 23.10 (code name Mantic Minotaur) introduces updated hardware support using Linux 6.5, better ZFS support in the installer, and the default install configuration is set to "Minimal". "The default Ubuntu Desktop installation is now minimal. There is still an 'Expanded installation' option for those who prefer to have applications like LibreOffice and Thunderbird installed for the first boot. (The 'Full' option is still the default with the legacy Desktop installer.) We are reintroducing support for ZFS guided installations, enhancing the flexibility and choices available for your storage management needs. This is a new implementation in the Subiquity-based installers, and is without encryption by default. The encrypted ZFS guided option will be developed in a future release. Starting with Ubuntu 23.10, TPM-backed full-disk encryption (FDE) is introduced as an experimental feature, building on years of experience with Ubuntu Core. On supported platforms, you no longer need to enter passphrases at boot manually." Additional information is provided in the release notes. Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) is a free operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and optimised for the Raspberry Pi hardware. The project's latest release is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm" and makes a move to switch the graphical interface from X11 to a Wayland session. "For Bookworm, we are using a compositor called Wayfire. This uses a standard Wayland library called wlroots, which is used by several modern Wayland compositors. And because Wayfire works a lot better as a Wayland compositor on Raspberry Pi than Mutter did, Wayland is now the default mode of operation for the desktop. (With one caveat - for now, Wayland is only the default on Raspberry Pi 4 and 5. The performance of Wayfire on earlier platforms is still being optimised, so for now they will continue to run the old X11 display server and the Openbox window manager, but at some point these platforms will also be switched to Wayfire.) If you boot Raspberry Pi OS on a Pi 4 or 5, you will now get a Wayfire desktop." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Tomáš Matějíček has released two updated builds of Slax, the project's minimalist, Slackware- and Debian-based live distributions: "I am thrilled to introduce the newest version of Slax, your only pocket operating system. This update is available for both of its bases: one that's built on Debian (version 12.1) and the other one on Slackware (version 15.0.2-current). One of the most notable enhancements of this release is the improved session handling, especially when running Slax from writable devices, like USB drives or hard disks. In the past, Slax didn't offer an easy method to manage multiple sessions. All modifications were simply stored in the /slax/changes directory, providing just one session in general. However, with this update, you can now maintain multiple sessions. Each session is neatly saved in its own subdirectory within /slax/changes/. At boot time, you are presented with options: you can either start a new session, resume a previous one, or select a session of your choice from a menu." The release announcement offers a full list of new features and enhancements. NEW • Distribution Release: elementary OS 7.1 |

|
elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features the Pantheon desktop environment. The project has updated its 7.x series, code name "Horus", with a number of new features and improvements. One focus of the new 7.1 release is privacy: "Today, we're proud to announce that OS 7.1 is available to download now and shipping on several high-quality computers. This release represents the sum of our work over the last several months as a single major update to the OS 7 series and includes all of the monthly OS updates we've detailed since the OS 7 release. One of the most prevalent problems we face in our current digital lives is the violation of our privacy and the lack of consent when interacting with our devices each day. Portals seek to provide a safe and consensual way for apps to interact with the operating system and ensure that they only get access to the data and features that you want them to. One of the ways that apps may become intrusive is by automatically starting themselves or running in the background without your permission. In OS 7.1, we now provide the Background & Autostart Portal which alerts you when apps are running in the background and makes sure that apps ask your permission before they can automatically start up when you turn on your device." Additional details are provided in the project's release announcement. The elementary OS ISO image is available for download from the distribution's home page (ISO image size: 2,868MB, pkglist). |

SpiralLinux is a selection of desktop spins built from Debian, with a focus on simplicity and out-of-the-box usability across all the major desktop environments. The project's latest release focuses on audio output, touchpad input, and placing reasonable limits on Btrfs snapshots. "For this release all editions of SpiralLinux are now using PipeWire with a proper out-of-the-box configuration for low-latency (5.3ms by default) JACK-compatible live audio applications, even on standard consumer hardware. The default configuration is unique to SpiralLinux and includes overrides to the default PipeWire configuration as well as a number of low-level system tweaks as recommended by rtcqs. This makes SpiralLinux an excellent base system for professional live audio production JACK workflows while simultaneously offering compatibility with normal PulseAudio consumer applications. To take full advantage of the low-latency JACK compatibility simply run 'sudo systemctl enable cpupower' to enable the optimal performance CPU governor."
