ExTiX is an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring a variety of desktop environments. The project's latest release is ExTiX 21.11 which ships with the LXQt desktop. "I have made a new version of ExTiX - The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 21.11 LXQt Live DVD. (The previous LXQt version was 21.5 from 210516). ExTiX 21.11 is based on a pre-release (not even BETA) of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)! Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported until 2027. The best thing with ExTiX 21.11 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 1580 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 3 or Advanced options -> load to RAM. Important note: Since this version of ExTiX is based on a pre-release of Ubuntu you shouldn't use it for sensitive work/business. Having said that I must also say that I haven't found any bugs." Further details can be found in the distribution's release announcement. Trisquel GNU/Linux is a 100% libre Ubuntu-based Linux distribution. The project has published a new update to its 9.0 series. The new media mostly offers security fixes, particularly dealing with out of date certificates. The new 9.0.1 media also removes some binary blobs found in the Linux kernel. "This minor update to the 9.x "Etiona" series is intended to provide an up to date set of ISO images, both for use as an installation medium and as a live environment with newer packages. This addresses two main security concerns in the 9.0 original ISO images: An outdated Certificate Authority collection (package ca-certificates) included an expired root certificate for LetsEncrypt, resulting in blocked access to repositories for new packages or updates. Overlooked binary blobs were found in versions of Linux-Libre prior to v5.14. Updated packages were added to the Trisquel repositories to correct the issue, and new ISO images were produced to include the fix. Along with those fixes, the release includes any other security update published upstream since we published Etiona, and the latest version of the Mozilla-based "Abrowser" (version 93)." Further details may be found in the project's release announcement. Download: trisquel_9.0.1_amd64.iso (2,618MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Barry Kauler has announced the release of EasyOS 3.1. The lightweight distribution features easy to use container technology which can sandbox specific applications or the entire desktop environment. The latest version includes a number of updates and changes to the filesystem layout. "There have been major functional changes: applications can now be run non-root each as its own user and group, and the folder hierarchy has become more conventional, with /clients becoming /home and /home becoming /files. As well as fixing issues in 3.0 due to the changes in directory hierarchy, version 3.1 has greatly enhanced video configurability and hardware profiling. Also, there are new RDP, VNC and SSH servers and clients available via the package manager. A lot of attention has been given to booting EasyOS from a USB-stick on different computers. Hardware profiling means that any video, bluetooth and audio configuration on one computer is remembered and automatically selected next time bootup on that same computer. Attention has also been given to the situation where video is broken at bootup, such as a black screen. There is a new 'Fix broken video' boot menu entry." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Download: easy-3.1-amd64.img.gz (522MB, MD5, pkglist). |

"We're pleased to announce that Redcore Linux Hardened 2102 (codename Polaris) is now available for download. This cycle was a rather smooth one, without major incidents, until the nasty portage bug announced in our last blogpost. But that one was not the only bug we addressed since our previous release. In fact, this release is mostly focused on polishing and fixing bugs, so you won't find many exciting new features inside. Though, we still updated over 1300 packages since our previous release and, to top it off, we did a mass rebuild of the whole repository. Changelog: re-sync with Gentoo's testing tree as of 01.10.2021; Linux kernel 5.14.10 as default; LTS linux kernels 5.10.71 and 5.4.151 available in repository; KDE Plasma 5.22.5, KDE Gear 21.08.1; Xwayland is now a standalone package; Chromium replaces Firefox as the default web browser; Mailspring replaces Thunderbird as the default mail client." Zebradots Software has announced the release of Redo Rescue 4.0.0, a major update of the project's specialist distribution for bare metal backups and system restoration tasks. Although the version number does not indicate it, the release is considered beta quality software, the first build based on Debian 11 "Bullseye": "This is a beta release based on Debian 11. For this major upgrade, the only change applied is the base operating system and any package requirements required to complete the migration to Debian 'Bullseye'. The underlying application and all functionality remains identical to the last release (3.0.2). Please note that newer packages, particularly Partclone or sfdisk, may contain breaking changes we are not aware of. Many (if not most) of the issues reported with the 3.0 releases were focused on the Debian 10's lack of support in the kernel for more recent hardware, which shows a login prompt instead of the GUI. We are hoping this release based on Debian 11 will fix these issues for the majority of users. Here is the brief release announcement as published on the project's GitHub page. Feren OS is a desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and featuring the KDE Plasma desktop. The project's latest snapshot is Feren OS 2021.10 which includes a new lock screen, new splash screen, and a customized Firefox experience. "The once scrapped configuration for Firefox has now made its way, now repurposed and improved for normal browser usage, into Firefox in Feren OS, both via a new package called firefox-config-feren, and an update to Web Browser Manager that now pre-installs this configuration of Firefox alongside the browser itself, effective starting Feren OS 2021.10. Enjoy Mozilla Firefox, now with: Compact Mode and no titlebar by default. None of that Stories stuff in New Tab (and other New Tab distractions). No Pocket by default. Library being in the toolbar (as was intended by Mozilla themselves during early Proton design ideas) instead of Pocket’s button. Most, if not all, the Telemetry values being off, including the ones you can’t change via Settings. Home button in the toolbar by default. Skipped Welcome Screens to allow you to get right into the action.... Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Red Hat has announced the release of a new update to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.x series, an enterprise-class Linux distribution with a range of support options. This version introduces new Ansible roles and provides live kernel patching options through the web administration console: "RHEL's web console, based on the upstream Cockpit project, is a web-based interface for managing and monitoring your systems. RHEL 8.5 Beta brings a few new tricks to an already useful and convenient RHEL utility. Enhanced web console performance metrics: The enhanced performance metrics page can help identify potential causes of high CPU, memory, disk, and network resource usage spikes. In addition, customers can more easily export metrics to a Grafana server. Kernel live patching management via web console: This new web console capability provides a simplified interface for applying live kernel updates without having to use command line tooling." Read the release announcement and the detailed release notes for further information. As always, existing Red Hat customers can get the new release from the company's Customer Portal, while new users can apply to download a 30-day evaluation edition. |

IPFire is a Linux distribution that focuses on easy setup, good handling and high level of security, intended for use in firewalls and routers. The project has published a new update which focuses on improving network throughput. "In recent days and months, the development team has spent a lot of time on finding bottlenecks and removing those. Our goal is to increase throughput on hardware and bringing latency down, for a faster network. This update brings a first change which will enable network interfaces that support it, to send packets that belong to the same stream to the same processor core. This allows taking advantage of better cache locality and the firewall engine as well as the Intrusion Prevention System benefit from this, especially with a large number of connections and especially on hardware with smaller CPU caches." The IPFire team is also continuing their work to remove Python 2 from their distribution. Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement.
