NEW • Distribution Release: elementary OS 8.0 |
Rate this project
|
The elementary OS project has announced the release of version 8.0 of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution. The new release focuses on adjusting application permissions and expanding the default Flatpak repositories: "Application settings has an all-new design that expands your control over permissions. We now support adjusting the run-time permissions in Flatpak's Permissions Store - these are set when an app explicitly asks for your permission to access a feature while it's running. So if you've previously denied an app access to run in the background or granted an app permission to set the wallpaper, you can change your mind at any time and adjust permissions here. We've also adjusted the language of install-time permissions - aka sandbox holes - to be more clear that these represent advanced system access and the implications of adjusting them. Plus the descriptions of several individual items were changed based on your feedback to use less technical language. And app permission pages now show the app's icon and description." Details on the changes along with screenshots can be found in the release announcement. Download (SHA256, pkglist) and purchase options are offered on the project's home page. |

Rate this project
|
YunoHost is a Debian-based distribution which strives to make it easy to quickly set up a server and host web applications. The project has relesed a new version based on Debian 12 "Bookworm". "YunoHost now depends on Debian 12. The user portal and SSO (Single Sign On) system have been split into three distinct pieces: SSOwat now only manages the SSO/ACL logic (as a nginx Lua middleware); yunohost-portal-api: A new “portal API” service delivering authentication cookies and allowing users to retrieve/update infos; yunohost-portal: A new login and homepage web portal. Simplified subdomain addition during app install (they can now be installed with a Let’s Encrypt certificate directly from the app install form instead of going through dozens of clicks). The installation script has been reworked with a simpler flow and UI (instead of the old ncurses/whiptail). The base YunoHost setup is now lighter: MySQL/MariaDB and PHP are not installed by default anymore (apps will explicitly depend on them hence everything gets installed only when needed)." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Download: yunohost-bookworm-12.0-amd64-stable.iso (691MB, SHA256, signature, pkglist). |

The software includes updates to the latest versions of leading open-source technologies for virtual environments like QEMU 9.0.2, LXC 6.0.0 , and ZFS 2.2.6 (with compatibility patches for Kernel 6.11). Alignment of the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) stack with the firewall: The SDN technology allows users to create virtual zones and networks (VNets), enabling them to effectively manage and control complex networking configurations and multitenancy setups via the web interface of Proxmox VE. The SDN stack is now more closely integrated with the firewall, with the ability to automatically generate IP sets for VNets and virtual guests managed by the IP address management plugin. Referencing IP sets in the firewall rules simplifies their creation and maintenance." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It focuses on speed and security optimisations. The project's latest snapshot is CachyOS 241110 which introduces several kernel and firmware updates which should improve gaming performance. "We have backported from the 6.13 Kernel the THP Shrinker, which allows splitting hugepages earlier, reducing memory usage when transparent_hugepages is set to 'always', while maintaining the same performance. Also, we have added the AMD Cache Optimizer, which can be modified at runtime to the preferred mode - cache or frequency. This changes the AMD preferred core ranking. This should help in games using the wrong CCD, for example. You can find instructions in the wiki on how to use this. Additionally, we have backported the AMD-pstate performance fixes for Strix Point laptops. This should generally improve the performance of these laptops." The UBports team have published a new update for their mobile operating system. The new release, version 20.04 OTA-6, is a relatively conservative update as the developers are working to polish features rather than introduce big changes. "Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-6 contains only a minimal number of changes due to our current focus on Ubuntu base OS upgrade. That said, we still have a few interesting changes: Some support for newer generations of Android HAL (hardware abstraction layer) has been added. This aims to make Ubuntu Touch support newer devices such as Fairphone 5 and the upcoming Volla Phone Quintus better, however this does not imply complete support for those devices just yet. Wireless Display see improved stability on some devices. (Credit goes to Azkali from Volla) General bug fixes and security updates." Originally VoLTE was planned for Vollla phones, but this feature has been held back due to an issue found in QA testing. The release announcement offers additional information. Parted Magic is a small live CD/USB/PXE with its elemental purpose being to partition hard drives. The project's latest release is version 2024_11_03 which updates the Linux kernel, introduces WINE 9.x and provides upgrades for LibreOffice and ClamAV. "This version of Parted Magic updates the kernel to Linux 6.11 and adds/updates various programs. WINE has been updated to version 9 with support for 32-bit and 64-bit programs. I didn't do any extensive testing, but I found an old AutoCAD 14 CD from the 90s and it did install and run. I also tested a few 64-bit Windows binaries and those also ran. Winetricks was added to help install programs and missing DLL files. I didn't realize how long it's been since LibreOffice was updated, so that got some attention. The clamtk program was saying the definitions were out of date, even though they were not. This was corrected with a ClamAV update. A forum user suggested Hddsuperclone to be added. Updated programs: BIND 9.18.30, Boost 1.78.0, Cabextract 1.11, ClamAV 1.4.1, cups-cURL 8.10.1, LibreOffice 24.8.2, Mozilla Firefox 115.16.1esr, NVIDIA driver 560.35.03, OpenSSH 9.9p1, OpenSSL 1.1.1zb, Perl5.34.0 Wine 9.0, ZFS on Linux 2.2.6" Additional information is provided on the project's news page, while download and purchase options are offered through the distribution's online store. |
