GhostBSD is a desktop-oriented, rolling release operating system based on FreeBSD. The project's latest snapshot adds a new tool for tracking the version of the rolling-release operating system. "This new ISO image contains kernel, operating system and software updates. In addition, I added a new command-line software called ghostbsd-version that gives you the GhostBSD version, FreeBSD version, kernel version, and operating system version. At the date of this release, if you run ghostbsd-version or ghostbsd-version -v, it should output 21.11.24. This version number will be incremented with the date of new package built on packages when update is performed. The ISO image version is now following the last package build version instead of an ISO image build date in the hope of removing confusion about the ISO image version. Changelog: added version file in the package repository; added /etc/version with ghostbsd-build from the version file in the package repository; added feature in update manager to update /etc/version; created ghostbsd-version; moved version under set_ghostbsd_version and set the GhostBSD ISO image version from the repository...." Additional information on the new GhostBSD snapshot can be found in the release announcement. Download (SHA256): GhostBSD-21.11.24.iso (2,671MB, torrent, pkglist). |

EuroLinux is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The project's latest release is EuroLinux 8.5. The distribution's release announcement offers highlights on the latest version: "We have released universal migration scripts. They are available at https://github.com/EuroLinux/eurolinux-migration-scripts. What's important is that these scripts update all packages of the distribution you are migrating from. No packages from the previous vendor remain after migration. This is the implementation of one of the popular requests made by our customers. In addition, the scripts have options that allow you to customize their operation to individual requirements. The migration process is described here. (New) HA and RS Repositories: EuroLinux 8.5 is the first release that includes High Availability and Resilient Storage repositories from the beginning. They significantly increase the system's capabilities and allow for easier migration, especially from very expensive cluster solutions from other vendors." |
UBports is a community-developed fork of Canonical's Ubuntu Touch operating system for mobile devices. The project's latest release is UBports 16.04 OTA-20. The new release includes several changes to notifications. "We implemented notification LED support for devices with Halium 9 base. If your device is still not blinking, keep in mind that many recent devices do not have a notification LED anymore: Vollaphone and Pixel 3a cannot blink physically for example. Also vibration works now for incoming notifications on those devices. We added support for Khmer and Bengali fonts to support users from these locales a bit better. It is now possible to define a custom notification sound. Like with ringtones one can now select any accessible audio file to be played when a new notification arrives. Let's annoy our co-workers with style! A few new devices were added to the range of installable devices again: Xiaomi Redmi 9 and 9 Prime (lancelot), Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 (merlin), Note 9 Pro (joyuese), Note 9 Pro Max (excalibur), Note 9S (curtana), Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro (gram) and Pixel 2 (walleye). The Pixel 2 has some battery lifetime issues though, so it might not be fully ready for your daily drive." Additional information is available in the project's release announcement. Supported devices and download options can be found on the UBports download page. |

Patrick Volkerding has announced that the development branch of Slackware Linux has reached "release candidate 2" status. As a result, the highly anticipated release of version 15.0 of the world's oldest surviving Linux distribution is just around the corner: "Clearly we're going to have to trend more carefully for things to settle down, so consider this RC2 and a much harder freeze. A test mass rebuild was done here and there are no more 'fails to build from source' remaining." The most recent entry in the current changelog also includes a note on rebuilding Python Markdown to fix the Samba build: "The newer versions of Markdown require importlib_metadata and zipp, and adding these also fixes the build, but oddly the installed PKG-INFO shows version 0.0.0, which I suspect is more breakage going on with setuptools. I've tried rebuilding all other Python modules here to see if a more general breakage had crept in somehow, but those are the only two Python modules I've found that exhibit this issue, and I've found other similar reports (but no fixes). Markdown 3.3.4 seems to be the safe bet for now." Rocky Linux is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, built from the upstream project's source code. The Rocky Linux team have launched version 8.5 of their operating system. One of the major changes in this release is the debut support for Secure Boot. "In less then 48 hours from RHEL-8.5 being released, we had successful tests on our ISOs and just before we were about to pull the string to go GA with 8.5, Microsoft countersigned our Secure Boot shim. We quickly deliberated and decided to backtrack and incorporate that into the 8.5 release. There were some things that we had to get in order and resolved, but it is with great pleasure that this release includes the official Rocky Linux signed shim. Here is the full thread to the shim review. As with any security related diligence, it is important to be able to validate the Secure Boot shim is exactly what you expect and that it is properly activated." Raspberry Pi OS is a Debian-based distribution custom built for Raspberry Pi computers. The development team have published a new version of Raspberry Pi OS which carries the code name "Bullseye". The new version is based on Debian 11 and upgrades a number of desktop components. "All of the desktop components and applications are now using version 3 of the GTK+ user interface toolkit. GTK+ is a layer of software that applications can use to draw standard user interface components (known as 'widgets') such as buttons, menus and the like, so that all applications have a consistent look and feel. Up until now, most of the desktop has used version 2 of the GTK+ toolkit, but increasing numbers of Debian applications are using GTK+3, so to try and keep things consistent, we've upgraded all our software and the desktop itself to the newer version. GTK+3 has been around for several years now, and people have occasionally asked why we didn't move to it before now. The simple answer is that many things are much easier to do with GTK+2 than with GTK+3, particularly when it comes to customising the appearance of widgets - GTK+3 has removed several useful features which we relied upon. It has ended up being necessary to find work-arounds to a lot of these - hopefully no one will notice them and everything will still work as before!" Red Hat has announced the availability of a new development release, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Beta. The new development release is built from CentOS Stream. It finishes the migration from Python 2 to Python 3. The new beta also offers smaller binaries due to link time optimization. "Link Time Optimization (LTO) is enabled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, and the system comes with a number of packages that are built with it. As a result, applications have smaller and faster binaries and allow deeper inspection of source code at compile time. This can improve GCC diagnostics for potential coding errors, such as One Definition Rule (ODR) violations. Go 1.16 brings support for the new embed package, enabling developers to bundle supporting data files into their Go programs and simplify developing with Go. With Go 1.16, modules are enabled by default making language dependencies easier to manage. Additionally, there are also several other improvements and performance optimizations. With the latest LLVM 12 toolset, developers can take advantage of fresher tooling, and compatibility with other code built with compatible versions of LLVM/Clang." Additional information is available in the company's release announcement and in the release notes. The new beta release is available through the Red Hat customer portal. |

The Fedora team have announced the launch of Fedora 35. The new version of Fedora ships with GNOME 41, the PipeWire audio system, and the WirePlumber session manager. "We switched the default audio system to PipeWire in Fedora Linux 34, and now we're improving this by adding the new WirePlumber session manager. WirePlumber allows for more customization of the policy and rules for audio and video. It provides a richer development experience and adds bindings for most languages. If you enable the third-party repositories that ship in Fedora Linux desktop variants, those repositories are now immediately available. Additionally, enabling third-party repositories now makes selected Flathub applications available via a filtered Flathub remote. This eases access to a curated list of applications that will not cause legal or other problems for Fedora to point to, does not overlap Fedora Flatpaks, and works reasonably well."
