"Ubuntu Touch now has support for NFC hardware in most of our devices running with Android 9 hardware compatibility, including the Pixel 3a and Volla Phone. People have already been thinking up ideas for how to use NFC features to read from passive medical monitors... This is a feature that seems to make people very excited. You can find some demo apps for this feature on Alfred's GitHub, ut-nfcd-p2p-demo showcases support for two Ubuntu Touch devices communicating while ut-nfcd-ndev-demo shows off reading and writing NFC tags. Camera flash, zoom, rotation, and focus was fixed on many supported Ubuntu Touch devices, including the OnePlus One." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Parted Magic is a small live CD/USB/PXE with its elemental purpose being to partition hard drives. Although GParted and Parted are the main programs, the CD/USB also offers other applications, such as Partition Image, TestDisk, fdisk, sfdisk, dd, and ddrescue. The project's latest release, version 2021_05_12, is the latest of the distribution's fixed releases. The release announcement on the Parted Magic news page reports the distribution will shift to a rolling release approach later in the year. "This version of Parted Magic once again updates 100's of core programs and adds some new ones requested by users. I have added bcachefs-tools, but I was not able find a kernel patch for Linux 5.12, so there isn't any kernel support. There is also some other news. This is the last version of Parted Magic in it's current release format. Starting with the next release (in about 3 months), Parted Magic will take on the rolling release model. The One Year Subscription will be mostly unchanged. The other option will be a subscription service for $4 a month. Why is this better? You will be able to pay $4 a month and get fixes and updates. This lowers the price from $11 to $4 if you only need Parted Magic for a single one off project. All you have to do is log into your account and unsubscribe at any time." Parted Magic can be purchased from the distribution's online store for US$11. |

Ludovic Courtès has announced the release of Guix System 1.3.0, an advanced distribution of the GNU operating system developed by the GNU Project which respects the freedom of computer users. It uses a recent Linux-libre kernel and a custom package management tool called Guix. Version 1.3.0 introduces experimental support for the POWER9 architecture. "We are pleased to announce the release of GNU Guix version 1.3.0. The release comes with ISO-9660 installation images, a virtual machine image, and with tarballs to install the package manager on top of your GNU/Linux distro, either from source or from binaries. Guix users can update by running guix pull. A distinguishing Guix feature is its support for declarative deployment - instead of running a bunch of guix install and guix remove commands, you run guix package --manifest=manifest.scm, where manifest.scm lists the software you want to install. Doing that installs exactly the packages listed. You can have that file under version control and share it with others, which is convenient. Until now, one would have to write the manifest by hand—not insurmountable, but still a barrier to someone willing to migrate to the declarative model." Big-ticket items: Significant work on dsynth, for building packages. Many updates of contrib system software. HAMMER2 work continues, with updates from Tomohiro Kusumi. Major VM work for extent-based representation. Due to major changes to the VM system we had to remove the MAP_VPAGETABLE mmap() feature, and this also means that vkernels will not be supported in this release. Support may be re-added at a later time via HVM (but not in this release)." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. NEW • OS Release: OpenIndiana 2021.04 |

OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. The project's latest release is 2021.04 which includes updates for key desktop applications, development tools, and hardware drivers. "We have updated firefox and Thunderbird to newer ESR versions (78.10.0 resp. 78.9.1). This was overdue and has been requested by many users. Finally we have more than one NVIDIA driver version available with nvidia-390.141 being the default. Changing the driver to another version is documented. At the moment we have the following versions in our repository: nvidia-460.67, nvidia-390.141, nvidia-340.108. Our gcc-7, gcc-8, gcc-9, and gcc-10 compilers have been patched to use the illumos libc SSP implementation for -fstack-protector. We have added openssl-1.1.1 and many packages have been updated to make use of the newer and supported version of openssl. Alas this process isn't finished yet as many packages don't use it out-of-the box and a few even don't work with its new interface. Work has been started to update our Python versions and the related packages. As a consequence we now have python-37 and python-39 packages. This is also an ongoing process that hasn't been finished yet." Further information is provided in the release announcement. NEW • Development Release: elementary OS 6.0 Beta |
Rate this project
|
elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution. Some of its more interesting features include a custom desktop environment called Pantheon and many custom applications. The developers have published a new beta snapshot which previews features coming to elementary OS 6.0. There are many changes in the works, including an updated installer, dark theme, development tools, and additional support for Flatpak. "A major shift for elementary OS 6 is the inclusion of Flatpak apps out of the box, as well as an entirely Flatpak-based AppCenter ecosystem. We’ve created and are shipping a Flatpak platform and SDK that include all of the FreeDesktop, GNOME, and elementary libraries and technologies your apps will need to be built as a Flatpak - think of the platform as the elementary OS base in Flatpak form. We’ve updated the relevant developer docs to include information about packaging your app as a Flatpak. If you already have an app on AppCenter or are developing one for elementary OS 6, we highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with writing a Flatpak manifest and testing your app as a Flatpak, as all AppCenter apps in elementary OS 6 and beyond will be built as Flatpaks." Rocky Linux, a new Linux distribution built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is the latest option available to all the disenchanted CentOS users whose preferred distribution was abruptly terminated in December 2020. Lead by CentOS founder Gregory Kurtzer, the project has announced its first release candidate for the upcoming version 8.3: "The Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF) is pleased to announce the general availability of the Rocky Linux 8.3 release candidate 1 for x86_64 and AArch64 architectures. This release is the culmination of months of hard work from every corner of the community. What started in a comment thread on a Red Hat blog in December of 2020 grew to a community over ten thousand strong in a Slack channel in a matter of days. From there you pulled together to build teams around infrastructure, branding, website, development, special interest groups and more. By February of 2021, over 80 million hits had been recorded across various social media platforms and news sites." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information. Theo de Raadt has announced the release of OpenBSD 6.9, the latest of the regular bi-annual releases from the project that develops a multi-platform, security-oriented UNIX-like operating system. This is OpenBSD's 50th official release: "We are pleased to announce the official release of OpenBSD 6.9. This is our 50th release. We remain proud of OpenBSD's record of more than twenty years with only two remote holes in the default install. As in our previous releases, 6.9 provides significant improvements, including new features, in nearly all areas of the system. Support for the powerpc64 platform was improved: added astfb(4), a driver for the framebuffer of the Aspeed BMC found on many POWER8 and POWER9 systems; added bsd.mp to powerpc64's installXX.{img, iso}; added RETGUARD implementation for powerpc and powerpc64; added a workaround for PCIO devices that cannot address the full 64-bit PCI address space to powerpc64; added limited emulation of unaligned access in the powerpc64 kernel." See the detailed release notes for a full list of changes and improvements. Download (pkglist): amd64/install68.iso (520MB, SHA256, signature), i386/install68.iso (384MB, SHA256, signature). |
