The portable NetBSD operating system has reached a new milestone with the release of NetBSD 10.0. The new version introduces a number of performance and security improvements: "Benchmarks of NetBSD 10 show huge performance and scalability gains over NetBSD 9.x, especially on multiprocessor and multicore systems, for compute and filesystem-bound applications. Areas of improvement included: switched the kernel's file path lookup cache to use faster per-directory red-black trees; improved scheduler performance, including the ability to more appropriately spread load on a mixture of slow and fast cores (e.g. big.LITTLE Arm CPUs); various optimizations for the machine-independent virtual memory system; improved tracking of clean/dirty pages, speeding up fsync(2) on large files by orders of magnitude; improved parallelization - rewritten page allocator with awareness of CPU topology, replaced global counters with per-CPU counters, and reduced lock contention; improved the performance of the select(2) and poll(2) system calls; improved the performance of tmpfs; implemented lazy update of atime/mtime; various optimizations of architecture-dependent x86 and AArch64 code, vastly improved network and I/O throughput on aarch64...." Additional details, including a list of the CPUs NetBSD supports, can be found in the project's release notes. Download (MD5, pkglist): NetBSD-10.0-amd64.iso (622MB, torrent).

Dynebolic was a member of the Debian family which was intended to serve the needs of media activists, artists and creative individuals, a practical tool for multimedia production. The project has been dormant for about ten years, but has become active once more. The project has published a development snapshot (based on Devuan) for the upcoming 4.0.0 release. The new release is a live image only, without the ability to install it on an internal disk and without any package management tools. "Ten years have passed and today we are back with a brand new Dynebolic 4.0 based on Devuan 5 'Daedalus', live-boot and the Linux kernel 6.8 series. We introduce a new user experience organized as different journeys into creativity, that we call workflows. Our desktop adopts KDE 5 Plasma and its Activities to provide pre-sets for five specific workflows: streaming, audio, video, graphics, publishing. Each activity is easily reached from the desktop panel or via keyboard shortcuts and offers everything needed for each workflow, while excluding the noise of other workflows, without compromising on access. If you are working, for example, in the Graphic workflow, nothing is stooping you from starting an app that pertains to, say, the Video workflow. Activities are easily customizable by the user in the system settings." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Download: dynebolic-4.0.0-beta.iso (1,516MB, SHA512, signature). |

ALT Linux is a project which produces multiple editions of an independent distribution for Russian speakers. The project's latest release, version 10.2, enables installing the distribution to Btrfs pools, includes Timeshift for working with filesystem snapshots, and includes an OEM install mode. "Computer manufacturers will be interested in the preinstallation mode (OEM mode). Added Timeshift 23.12. This program is designed to create snapshots of system files and settings. In the installer, at the disk preparation stage, it became possible to create subpartitions of the BtrFS. This file system uses accelerated operations with any files thanks to copy-on-write technology which affects fault tolerance and ease of administration. A security benefit when using BtrFS is the creation of a restore point before updating the system. A module has been added to the System Control Center (Alterator) for remote configuration of the system via the alterator-fbi network (Form Based Interface) which provides a web-based management interface. Changes have been made to the text of the license agreement." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Univention Corporate Server (UCS) is an enterprise-class distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. The project has published an update to its 5.0 series which introduces blocklists for the Univention Directory Manager. "A new feature in UCS is “blocklists” for the Univention Directory Manager (UDM). This feature allows UDM to block previously used values for specific attributes. One possible use case would be preventing the unintentional reuse of an email address, which could potentially lead to one user accessing another user’s emails: a user had the email address “smith@company.com,” then leaves the company, and their account is deleted. Shortly after, a new user “smith” is created. Now, UDM can prevent the creation because “smith@company.com” would be used as the email address again. Blocking old email addresses occurs automatically when the feature is activated (it is initially deactivated) and the corresponding blocklists are created. The blocklists can also be managed with a UMC module." Additional information can be found in the release announcement and in the release notes. CachyOS, a user-friendly and highly-optimised Linux distribution based on Arch Linux, has received a significant update. Its version 240313 features the brand-new KDE Plasma 6 desktop with Qt 6 and the Wayland display server by default: "This is our third release in 2024 and brings quite big changes. We are dropping our GNOME ISO image due to a lack of maintenance and double testing for every release. Also, this should avoid confusion among users about the net-installation, and supported desktop environments, since we are providing most desktop environments directly in the netinstall. This ISO image is based on Plasma 6 and will also have Wayland enabled by default. This should not have a big impact on NVIDIA users since X11 can still be used after the installation. Plasma 6 seems Wayland-wise in really good shape and as soon wayland-protocols and NVIDIA provide the explicit sync protocol, this should also be the case for most NVIDIA users. Features: Plasma 6 is now shipped in the ISO image and uses Wayland as default, GNOME ISO image got dropped to avoid confusion about netinstall; Calamares - rebased for Qt 6; refind - add f2fs and zfs as option including luks2 encryption...."
