MidnightBSD is a desktop-oriented operating system derived from FreeBSD. The project's latest stable release is MidnightBSD 3.0.0 which is available in i386 and x86_64 builds. With this leap in version from the 2.x series, there are a number of significant changes. "There are known issues with the Firefox, Chromium-bin, Midori and Epiphany web browser packages and mports that need to be corrected. (detected late, sorry). Issues were created on GitHub in mports repo to track these. (mesa issue, see below) i386 and amd64 packages are available, but there was an issue with our mesa version. It has been updated in mports but new packages haven't been built yet. When upgrading from a previous release, be sure to get on at least MidnightBSD 2.2.5 before jumping to 3.0. There are issues with usr.bin/lex on some systems. When doing a major upgrade from 2.x to 3.x, sometimes it's necessary to disable Perl builds in usr.bin/Makefile. If you get an error with buildworld in src/rescue/rescue, try removing camcontrol and df from the makefile temporarily." A complete list of changes can be found in the release notes. Trisquel GNU/Linux is a 100% libre Ubuntu-based Linux distribution. The project's latest release, version 11.0, is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and greatly expands compatibility with a wider range of CPU architectures. "New supported architectures. Following the addition of 32-bit ARM support in Trisquel 10, we now introduce support for 64-bit ARM and POWER architectures, to expand the options for hardware compatibility. d-i/Netinstall (also called debian-installer) is the text-mode installer for Trisquel, which allows for advanced and custom installations, often used for servers. After Ubuntu dropped support for this installation method, we stepped in to add any removed pieces and make it functional again, often from upstream Debian sources. The Fedora project has published a beta snapshot of the distribution's upcoming Fedora 38 release. The new beta features GNOME 44, updated development tools, and strict compile flags to protect against common memory attacks. "Fedora 38 Workstation Beta includes GNOME 44. It’s currently in beta, with a final release expected at the end of March. GNOME 44 includes a lot of great improvements, including a new lock screen, a 'background apps' section on the quick menu, and improvements to accessibility settings. In addition, enabling third-party repositories now enables an unfiltered view of applications on Flathub. We always strive to bring new security features to users quickly. Packages are now built with stricter compiler flags that protect against buffer overflows. The rpm package manager uses a Sequoia-based OpenPGP parser instead of its own implementation. If you’re profiling applications, you’ll appreciate the frame pointers now built into official packages. This makes Fedora Linux a great platform for developers looking to improve Linux application performance." Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest release, Kali Linux 2023.1, introduces a few new features, including defensive (purple) tools and Python virtual environments. "There are times where apt may not work for you, such as if there is not yet a Debian package or what is in our network repository is outdated. Look, we get it. You may need the latest version of a Python library and thus pulling from Pip gives you what you are after. However, there are then repercussions of files getting added / updated / removed which either package manager is not aware of. Things may not break straight away, but they might. An example could be when either package manager has an update of the module, or you try and install a module using the other ecosystem. Enter venv (Virtual environment). This creates an area which is completely independent." Details on these and other changes can be found in the project's release announcement. Ferdinand Thommes has announced the release of siduction 22.1.1, un updated build of the project's distribution based on Debian's "unstable" branch and offering official variants with KDE Plasma, LXQt and Xfce desktops: "We are pleased to offer siduction 2022.1.1 as a bug-fix release. It is based on an excerpt of Debian 'Sid' from March 8, 2023. siduction 2022.1 had some problems with the newly introduced snapshot feature when using Btrfs as filesystem, which were difficult to solve, but are now fixed. In addition, siduction 2022.1.1 reflects the changed sources list due to Debian's new policy on handling non-free firmware. Furthermore, besides many package updates, Linux 6.2.2 and KDE Plasma 5.27.2 are shipped. With that out of the way, let's cut to the chase. 'Masters of War' has quite a few new features to offer that we hope you will find exiting enough to try out. But before that, let's get to the basics first. LibreELEC 11.0.0, a major new version from the project that develops a multi-platform Linux distribution centred around the Kodi media centre, has been released. The new version updates Kodi to version 20.0 and re-introduces support for older Amlogic devices: "The final stable version of LibreELEC 11, bringing Kodi 'Nexus' 20.0, has been released. With the new release cycle, we add a Generic-Legacy image supporting NVIDIA cards, Chrome Browser add-ons and older hardware. We also re-introduce support for older Amlogic devices (S905, S905X/D, S912). LibreELEC 10.0 installs will not automatically update, but you can update manually. Older LibreELEC installs must make a clean install due to the Python 3 changes since Kodi 19. The Generic image now runs the same GBM/V4L2 graphics stack we have long used with ARM platforms. It now supports HDR with recent AMD and Intel GPUs. We have added a Generic-Legacy image that runs the older X11 graphics stack used in LE v7-v10. You can update between the GBM and X11 images without issues." See the release announcement and the changelog for further information. LibreELEC provides IMG images for Raspberry Pi, Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, NXP and generic x86_64 devices, as well as OVA images for VirtualBox. Here is the link to the generic x86_64 variant: LibreELEC-Generic.x86_64-11.0.0.img.gz (226MB). |

Shasheen Ediriweera has announced the release of Rescuezilla 2.4.2, the latest version of the project's "Swiss army knife of system recovery" based on Ubuntu. The new release adds a variant based on Ubuntu 22.10 (besides the ones derived from Ubuntu's most recent long-term supported releases). From the changelog: "Removes the Intel screen tearing fix introduced in 2.3 which should fix black screens on Intel graphics; introduces Ubuntu 22.10 'Kinetic' for best support of recent hardware, but leaves default build as Ubuntu 22.04 'Jammy'; reintroduces a 32-bit (Intel i386) build, currently based on Ubuntu 18.04 'Bionic' after it was temporarily dropped in Rescuezilla 2.0; note - Partclone backwards compatibility is imperfect and 32-bit release uses an old Ubuntu repository Partclone version, not the latest compiled version; fixes Backup mode's broken SSH port field introduced in 2.4; installs lxappearance, hexdump (bsdmainutils), flashrom; installed packages which improve ability to mount encrypted drives with pcmanfm file manager; replaces out-of-service Travis-CI build bot integration with GitHub Actions for improved quality-control and to assist Rescuezilla contributors...." Garuda Linux is a rolling distribution based on the Arch Linux operating system. the project's latest release, Garuda Linux 230305, features an improves interface for the setup assistant and replaces Latte-Dock with standard Plasma panels. "The dr460nized edition has in the past relied heavily on Latte-Dock's features. For most of us, it's not news that the development of Latte-Dock has now more or less ceased. This sadly necessitated significant changes, that required replacing Latte-Dock with more standardized Plasma panels. This change takes away somewhat from the dr460nized edition's eye candy appeal factor by losing features like top bar colors/transparency. Usability is also impacted to some degree as it will no longer be possible to drag the top bar to move windows. However, we expect these changes to make the KDE dr460nized edition's desktop experience far more stable, but also different. We feel these new required changes still provide great OOTB visual appeal worthy of being called dr460nized. Since Latte-Dock will inevitably cause instabilities and glitches in the future, we'd highly suggest switching to Plasma panels before it's too late." Armbian 23.02 is the latest release from a project providing a lightweight Linux distribution optimised for custom ARM, RISC-V or Intel hardware, with fully-featured Xfce, GNOME or Cinnamon-based desktop. This version upgrades the Linux kernel to the long-term supported version 6.1: "Armbian 23.02 'Quoll' is now available. It features a new LTS kernel based on Linux 6.1.y (where possible), with builds around 'Bullseye' and 'Jammy', as well as Debian 'Bookworm' and Ubuntu 'Lunar' for developers. Armbian OS remains one of the most popular operating systems on the new Rockchip RK3588 platform, featuring official support for Radxa Rock 5 and Orange Pi 5. This will be the last release before we switch to the new build framework, which has been completely rewritten. The new build framework has an advanced but simple-to-use logging system and we no longer use external compilers and the caching system has been reworked to maximize space and computing resources. Compilation works on all architectures and operating systems, including now officially supporting WSL2." See the release announcement and the changelog for further details. The project provides images for a vast range of computers and boards, including a generic Intel/AMD builds, based on Debian 11 and Ubuntu 22.04; please visit the download page to see the full list of supported devices. |
