The project's 2026.2 release includes several upgrades: "It's the final week of Q2, and Kali Linux 2026.2 is here - right on schedule. We have been heads down since our last release, and we are ready to share what we have been working on. This release is a mix of desktop refreshes, infrastructure improvements, and quality-of-life changes that we think you will appreciate. The Mageia project has released a new version, Mageia 10, which brings updates to the project's package management tools, welcome screen and CPU requirements. "We increase hardware requirements for 32bit systems, you will require a CPU with SSE2 features. You will find that extension for the packages and the part for architecture in the name of the ISO images have changed from i586 to i686. Also, due most of the software projects are dropping 32-bit support, you can find that the support is not as full as in the x86_64 systems. Our atelier and dev teams have worked hard to find the best balance between visual appeal and disk space usage. As usual, we've selected a range of resolutions for the main background to accommodate a wide variety of monitors, and we've also optimized their sizes using tools available in our repositories. For the main screensavers, we have chosen an image size of 3840×2160 and the JXL format, allowing them to look great on modern 2K and even 4K monitors, while maintaining a disk space footprint similar to those included in Mageia 9, which used lower resolutions and the JPG format." AnduinOS 2.0.0 has been released. AnduinOS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution featuring a GNOME desktop customised with a variety of extensions. This major new release brings extensive under-the-hood changes while maintaining the usability and customisability of the desktop. "Today, AIURSOFT Limited is announcing the general availability of AnduinOS 2.0.0. The project is now officially maintained by AIURSOFT Limited (Hong Kong), marking its transition from a solo-maintained effort to an internationally backed ecosystem. When we started this project, like many downstream Linux distributions, we used to rely on a series of complex imperative Bash scripts to modify an existing system image. While functional, it was fragile and difficult to maintain and upgrade. For version 2.0, we took a step back and rebuilt the entire foundation from the ground up. AnduinOS 2.0 is no longer a simple "remaster". It is now assembled entirely from scratch using a clean debootstrap and chroot pipeline, driven by our custom-built, declarative packaging toolchain (aosproj and apkg). The OS core has been meticulously modularized into 56 standard .deb packages across three tiers - Hard Replacements (e.g., overriding ubuntu-desktop), Soft Overrides (e.g., apt-config) and Branding/Capability extensions." The KaOS project has announced the launch of KaOS 2026.06 which completes the distribution's shift to the Dinit init software. "After almost three years of preparation and close the a year of trials, building, testing and rebuilding, KaOS is proud to present to you a first stable ISO image that is fully Dinit-based. For those interested in the reason why all these changes, please read systemd and the future of KaOS. A move away from systemd as init system is completed. KaOS now uses Dinit, turnstile, seatd for the system startup, seats and services. This does not mean the system is systemd free, a much reduced systemd is still in use mainly for udev and tmpfiles (this will stay for the foreseeable future, other options for udev and tmpfiles will be evaluated). Elogind is in use, though not for system login, but purely for a functional polkit. A new display manager is also in use, greetd with tuigreet has replaced sddm. Greetd fully integrates with seatd, so is a better fit for KaOS in the new setup. You will not find Plasma or Kwin on this ISO image, instead you will find a Niri/Noctalia based system." The PorteuX project has published a new release, version 2.7. The new release includes updates for several desktop environments, including GNOME, COSMIC and Plasma. "First of all, apologies for the long delay. There were some upstream issues that were preventing a stable PorteuX release, most notably the ntfs3 kernel driver, now updated to the new ntfs-plus driver, which is faster and hopefully more reliable. Please note that any symlink created on an NTFS partition using ntfs3 will need to be regenerated. There are many exciting changes for this release, including a big round of build flag and stripping improvements for better performance and smaller modules, and many big upstream updates, such as GCC 16.1.0, FFmpeg 8.1.1, KDE Plasma 6.7.0, GNOME 50.2 and Qt 6.11.1. Home Assistant OS, or HAOS for short, has been upgraded to version 18.0. HAOS is an independently-developed, Linux-based operating system optimised to run Home Assistant, an open-source home automation tool. It is available for several popular platforms, including Raspberry Pi and ODROID, as well as generic x86_64 and AArch64 systems. "Home Assistant OS 18.0 is a major release bringing significant updates to all platforms. The Linux kernel has been updated from 6.12 to 6.18 across all targets, Docker has been upgraded to v29.5.3 with containerd v2.2.4, and the underlying Buildroot has been updated to 2025.02.14. Disk images are now significantly faster to flash, the default swap size is now bounded to avoid problems on systems with very low or very high amounts of RAM, and the Raspberry Pi bootloader firmware can now be updated directly from Home Assistant. All users are recommended to update. The Raspberry Pi bootloader (EEPROM) firmware can now be checked and updated directly from Home Assistant OS. Home Assistant Core 2026.7.0 will also expose the firmware as an update entity. Note that updating the firmware is only possible when the system is booted from an SD card, or in general on Raspberry Pi 5 and on Home Assistant Yellow with a CM5." The latest release updates handling of group mailboxes and makes it easier to identify objects in the management interface. "The latest patch-level release of Univention Corporate Server bundles all new features and improvements from the past three months onto new installation media. UCS 5.2-6 brings highlights from Univention Nubus such as a new metrics endpoint for improved observability and technical details for directory objects in the Management UI and additions to the mail stack with alternative mail addresses for groups. When analyzing configuration issues or end-user incidents, it is often necessary to access technical information used in the backends, such as the Univention Object Identifier. To simplify the process of matching real names with technical identifiers for users, groups, and any other information stored in the directory service, the Management UI now includes a new section with these identifiers. This is helpful in several scenarios: if a warning or error containing a technical identifier is logged in a backend service, administrators can now search for that identifier directly in the Management UI and easily access the full information about the affected object." The new version focuses on polishing classic software options, providing X11 support, fixes for the ROX-filer file manager, and improving video playback by swapping out Celluloid for SMPlayer. "Version 7.4 is a 'milestone' release, consolidating EasyOS as supporting 'legacy' software architectures, including Xlibre X.Org server and GTK2-ng. We are committing to ongoing support, updating and enhancing, of GTK2-based applications, including ROX-Filer, that has undergone many fixes and improvements, such as memory-leak fix, back-forward history buttons, and video thumbnails. We continue to refine and improve the inbuilt package collection, as usual including the 'kitchen sink'. For example, we have replaced the Celluloid media player, which has been troublesome, with SMPlayer and VIDplay (a chromium-based video player). Other refinements include replacing StreamTuner2 Internet radio player with YRadio. Having the "kitchen sink" builtin means that we want to have applications builtin to satisfy 99% of users. One niche area is a simple database application; this gap is now filled by Symphytum. Lots of utility applications have been fixed and improved, including EasyCast screen recorder, DropboxGUI dropbox.com file manager, improved optical drive handling and fixes for pBurn CD/DVD burner app. The list goes on." Franco Conidi has announced the release of SysLinuxOS 13.2, an updated build of the project's Debian-based distribution made primarily for system integrators and network administrators. The new version uses the Btrfs filesystem on new installation and integrates the Snapper utility for managing snapshots of Btrfs subvolumes. "SysLinuxOS 13.2 is a substantial revision of how the system handles storage, backups, recovery and boot. The release introduces Btrfs as the default filesystem and builds an integrated snapshot, rollback and backup layer on top of it. All of these capabilities are preconfigured and active from the first boot, with no additional setup required. New installations use Btrfs with the standard @ subvolume for root and @home for home. Calamares performs the partitioning and subvolume layout automatically during guided installation, with no manual configuration. Btrfs enables capabilities that are not available on ext4 - instant snapshots, full system rollback, and native incremental backups. In SysLinuxOS 13.2 these features are integrated and preconfigured out of the box. As soon as SysLinuxOS 13.2 is installed, Snapper is configured and active. The following operations are automatic: a baseline snapshot is created at the end of the installation, providing a clean reference point; each apt install, upgrade or remove operation creates a pre/post snapshot pair...."
