LRs GNU Linux
LRs-Linux was based upon Linux From Scratch (LFS). In contrast to LFS and most common distros, LRs Linux has the ability to compile directly from the CD. This means that binaries can be natively compiled for the target host during the install, enhancing the performance of the resultant system. The install process was largely automated.

Univention Corporate Server (UCS) is an enterprise-class distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. It features an integrated management system for central administration of servers. The distribution's latest update includes improved virtual local area network (VLAN) management: With version 5.0-2, RADIUS now also allows administrators to assign dedicated VLANs to specific user groups. For example, visitors can be assigned access to a dedicated guest VLAN that allows access only to the Internet, but not to the organization's internal network. This is an important feature for increasing network security. For more info, see the blog article Service-specific Password for RADIUS. Minor enhancements and bug fixes have been released for the App Center, which in detail can be found in the release notes. Here, we have focused on porting more apps to UCS 5 as well as the deployment of new apps." Additional information can be found in the distribution's release announcement and in the release notes. UBports is a community-run comtinuation of Canonical's Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system. The project has published a new update: UBports 16.04 OTA-23. The new release offers improved video decoding, better MMS message handling, and fixes a problem where known wi-fi passwords would sometimes be prompted for again. "Initial support for FM radios (@mardytardi): If you own any of those devices: BQ E4.5, BQ E5, Xiaomi Note 7 Pro - you are lucky: Connect your headphones, download the FM Radio App and enjoy the show. Several improvements are planned, and consider it more like a proof of concept. Also it will not work on other devices since the kernel needs a few options set. More devices to come... Messaging App (@lduboeuf): Some smaller improvements for MMS handling for bigger attachments. Also text messages with special characters from the HTML specification (&, <, >) are no longer truncated. Jingpad A1 (@fredldotme): Support hardware video decoding in the Media Player App." Details are available in the project's release announcement. Bryan Poerwo has announced the release of EndeavourOS 22.6, the latest stable version of the project's Arch-based, "terminal-centric" Linux distribution featuring a customised Xfce desktop. Code-named "Artemis", the new release brings an improved support for the ARM architecture: "We are proud to present the 'Artemis' release, named after the upcoming NASA mission to the moon and I do refer to that mission for a reason, but more on that later. Artemis is our regular ISO refresh release, so users who already are running EndeavourOS don’t have to install this release, you already are up-to-date. Besides the regular updates and improvements on the ISO image and the installation process is this release the first ISO that brings EndeavourOS ARM closer to the main release. Just like NASA’s Artemis mission will be to go back to the moon and also lay the foundation for the future (Mars) missions, the Artemis release is laying the foundation for the future of EndeavourOS ARM. From the launch of our ARM branch in 2020, it was always our goal to integrate the ARM install process as an option on the main ISO release. After a lot of brainstorming and perseverance, we are proud to present you with our first milestone step in bringing the two projects closer together." SUSE has announced the release of SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) 15 SP4, the fourth service pack of the company's enterprise-class Linux distribution designed mainly for developers and administrators to deploy business-critical workloads. The new service package includes extended search for packages across repositories (even those not enabled) and 389 Directory Server replaces OpenLDAP. "The OpenLDAP server (package openldap2, part of the Legacy SLE module) has been removed from SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP4. The OpenLDAP client libraries are widely used for LDAP integrations and are compatible with 389 Directory Server. Hence, the OpenLDAP client libraries and command-line tools will continue to be supported on SLES 15 to provide an easier transition for customers that currently use the OpenLDAP Server. To replace OpenLDAP server, SLES includes 389 Directory Server. 389 Directory Server (package 389-ds) is a fully-featured LDAPv3-compliant server suited for modern environments and for very large LDAP deployments. 389 Directory Server also comes with command-line tools of its own." KaOS is an independent, rolling release distribution which focuses on providing a polished KDE/Qt desktop environment and associated applications. The project's latest snapshot is KaOS 22.06 which ships with KDE Plasma 5.25 and an updated Calamares system installer. "Calamares now uses the 3.3 branch. There are no releases with it yet, but it comes with enough improvements that it is a better fit for KaOS. The integration with KPMCore has improved, LUKS support is more robust and there is now an option to not encrypt the boot partition when encryption is chosen for the install. Some GUI improvements have been implemented too. But for most, the biggest news for this release will be Plasma 5.25. KDE Plasma 5.25 redesigns and enhances how you navigate between windows and workspaces. The Overview effect shows all of your open windows and virtual desktops. Gestures on touchpads and touchscreens put Plasma at your fingertips. The dominant colour of your background picture can be applied to all components that use the accent colour." Philip Müller has announced the release of Manjaro Linux 21.3.0, the latest stable version of the project's rolling-release distribution offering a choice of KDE Plasma, Xfce and GNOME desktops. This release features version 3.2 of the Calamares installer. "Manjaro 21.3.0 'Ruah' released. Since we released 'Qonos' at the end of last year, our developer team worked hard to get the next release of Manjaro out there. We call it 'Ruah'. This release features the final release of Calamares 3.2. Partition module gained more support for LUKS partitions. Users module now has lists of forbidden login names and host names, to avoid settings that will mess up the install. The GNOME edition has received a major update to GNOME 42. A new global dark user interface style preference has arrived. This can be used to request that apps use a dark user interface style instead of light. The new setting can be found in the new Appearance panel in the Settings app, and is followed by most GNOME apps." Continue to the release announcement for further information. The GhostBSD project develops a desktop operating system based on FreeBSD. The project's latest snapshot is GhostBSD 22.06.15 which includes better handling of NVIDIA drivers and smoothly upgrade processes. "Some of the improvements are automation on the livecd to install the proper Nvidia driver, and when a package fails to upgrade, Update Station will reinstall it and resume the update. I have added the BWN_GPL_PHY option in our default GENERIC kernel to compile drivers that include GPLv2 code. Now, most Broadcom devices are detected, including my iMac. In most cases bwn_v4_ucode_load="YES" or bwn_v4_lp_ucode_load="YES" need to be added in /boot/loader.conf. In addition, GhostBSD was upgraded to 13.1-STABLE from 22/05/31. Features added: Do not show updates available when packages are syncing. Add a file called syncing when new packages are syncing and remove it when completed. Add code to update-station read if syncing is in the repository and do not prompt users for upgrades. Add code to software-station to not allow software installation with software-station during a packages sync." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. |
Kevin Chevreuil has announced the release of Kaisen Linux 2.1. Kaisen Linux is a rolling-release, Debian-based desktop distribution. The project aims to be useful for IT professionals. The new release includes several technical changes and some visual ones. For instance, Kaisen 2.1 swaps out the default zsh shell for bash and drops the themed Conky desktop widget. "ZSH is no longer the default terminal for Kaisen Linux! It was since the first release of Kaisen Linux the default terminal, but the majority of users asked for the return of Bash by default, which has been done on this release. Several polls on the different social network pages have been done for this. However, it is still installed as it was before (with oh-my-zsh), and it is possible to reset it to the default. The documentation is here: ZSH on Kaisen Linux. The Conky theme is no longer installed by default with the GUIs, but is a separate package named kaisen-conky, which is no longer installed by default. The reason for this is that user feedback was not unanimous about the default presence of Conky on Kaisen Linux and therefore it is now considered a 'goodie' and can be installed optionally." The full list of changes can be found in the release announcement. |
The IPFire team have published a new update to their security and firewall focused distribution. A key update affects the project's intrusion prevention system (IPS): "Stefan contributed a patch series for notably improving the IPS, particularly when it comes to handling of ruleset providers. While many of the changes are done under the hood, the following are visible to the web interface: Monitoring mode can now be enabled for each ruleset provider individually. This makes baselining and testing much less of a hassle, since newly introduced IPS ruleset providers can now first be used for logging only, without risking disruptions or unintended side-effects. Parsing and restructuring changed or updated rulesets has been improved and is now faster by orders of magnitude. The downloader will now automatically check whether a ruleset has been updated on its providers' server by checking the ETag HTTP header. This allows us to drop the update interval selection; every IPS ruleset will now updated automatically on the appropriate interval." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): ipfire-2.27.x86_64-full-core168.iso (364MB, torrent, pkglist). |

postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project offers three mobile interfaces: Phosh, Plasma Mobile, and Simple Mobile X Interface (Sxmo). The project's latest release is version 22.06 which includes a handy upgrade feature. "First of all, we are happy to announce that one can now upgrade from one release to the next one. We made it work for Sxmo, Phosh and Plasma Mobile. A script that runs every night ensures that this doesn't break for v21.12 -> v22.06 (and v22.06 -> edge to prepare for the next release). While we don't officially support it, the script even allows switching between all possible versions. Say from postmarketOS edge to v22.06 if you are tired of living on the edge. Thanks to Alpine's package manager apk it works fast and reliable. For now this is CLI based, in the future it should be possible to hook this up to graphical apps like GNOME Software and KDE Discover. More on upgrading in the wiki." NEW • Distribution Release: EasyOS 4.0 |
Rate this project
|
EasyOS is an experimental Linux distribution which uses many of the technologies and package formats pioneered by Puppy Linux. The project's new EasyOS 4.0 release makes adjustments to compression, structural changes to the system, and avoids writing data to the hard drive - normal system operations happen in RAM. "Significant structural changes since then have warranted a major-version number bump, now 4.0. Not a complete list, nor detailed, just some brief highlights of new features since 3.4.7, in no particular order: The download file is 'easy-4.0-amd64.img' - no longer compressed, which simplifies writing the image to a drive. During normal usage, everything happens in RAM and there are no writes to the drive. This potentially means that a cheap flash stick (likely without wear-leveling) will last 'forever'. Squashfs files, including 'easy.sfs', are now lz4-hc compressed. This, in combination with running totally in RAM, results in noticeable speed improvements. App startup and container startup now very fast. There is now a 'save' icon on the desktop. You choose when to flush your work from RAM to drive, or not, or let it happen at shutdown. Note, it is possible to flip back to the old mode, direct writes to the drive, without a 'save' icon. An old problem of unclean filesystem shutdown, due to the layered filesystem on '/', has been solved." Further details are presented in the project's release announcement and in the release notes.
