The CachyOS team has announced the release of an updated ISO image of CachyOS, a Arch-based Linux distribution with the latest KDE Plasma as the chosen desktop on the live image. The new version 260114 comes with a reworked system installer, new Plasma login manager, and Wayland as the preferred display server: "This is our first release of the year, bringing a host of improvements to the installer, the new display manager (Plasma Login Manager), and much more. First, we have significantly reworked the installer and added many quality-of-life improvements. The bootloader selection has been moved directly into the installer, featuring a description for each option; Limine is now selected as the default bootloader. Architecture detection now happens at the very beginning of the installation process, which reduces the download size by around 1 Gigabyte. Additionally, we now pass the --needed flag to pacman to avoid reinstalling up-to-date packages. The mount options for NVMes have also been improved when Btrfs is selected, now defaulting to compression level 1. Next, the ISO has been switched to Plasma Login Manager, and the Live ISO now uses Wayland instead of X11." Read the rest of the release announcement for further information. It is based on Debian's "Unstable" branch and uses the dwm window manager. "Skywave Linux has been upgraded to version 5.10, bringing some software changes, a kernel upgrade and bug fixes: Linux kernel 6.18.5, with the XanMod efficiency and speed tweaks; adjustments to Tor-Remote and Tor-Controller scripts; added I2P darknet access using Purple/i2pd; adjustments to the Neovim LSP configuration; Neovim plugins have been upgraded; Qtel, the Echolink client, has been removed; upgraded the dwm window manager dwm-flexipatch to version 6.6; updated satellites and transponders for Gpredict and SatDump; expanded the scope of the KiwiSDR list to include OpenWebRX sites; the theme for this upgrade cycle was 'Delegate more to systemd and reduce manual interventions'. I have cleaned out the user's dot profile and xinit files, moving environmental variables to the user's .config directory, for handling by systemd. I also deleted the code which forcefully set the screen dots per inch, based on specs detected by X11. Fonts and application windows are now more consistently sized across more diverse hardware." The MX Linux team has announced an update to the distribution's 25.x series. MX Linux 25.1 maintains the existing Debian 13.1 base and sees a return to offering a choice of init software at boot time. "Making a return as of 25.1 is a dual-init setup with both systemd and SysVInit on the same ISO image. This drastically cuts the number of builds we do and also brings back a feature that was uniquely MX and many users enjoyed. In addition to the usual bug fixes and updates, there are a few nice user-oriented changes related to the dual-init setup from our past releases. Users will be able to choose the init system from the live boot menu on first boot of the live system. The installer will set up whatever init system is running at the time of install as the default for the installed system. The other init will be in the GRUB boot menu under 'advanced', like systemd was on our MX-23 and earlier releases. The tendency for MX-23 to break polkit/dbus on logout/login cycles when systemd-shim was in operation, the main symptom being the root privilege escalation prompt would not appear, appears to not happen with the new setup." Bryan Poerwo has announced the release of EndeavourOS 2026.01.12, a minor "Neo" update of the project's Arch-based, rolling-release Linux distribution featuring a customised KDE Plasma desktop: "We are kicking off 2026 with the release of 'Ganymede Neo'. As you are accustomed to with our Neo releases, this release includes upstream updates and minor changes compared to the 'Ganymede' ISO image. Before I go into the release notes, I just want to remind you of the following. The changes described over here are affecting new installs, our Calamares installer and the live environment on the ISO image only. Running systems don't have to 'upgrade' to 'Ganymede Neo'; if you update regularly, your system is fine. This ISO image and offline installer ships with: Calamares 26.01.1.5, Firefox 146.0.1, Linux kernel 6.18.4, Mesa 25.3.3, X.Org Server 21.1.21, NVIDIA 590.48.01. And has the following bug fixes: the long startup time issue with Calamares has been resolved; the Nemo preview package was removed from the default package bundle for Cinnamon and Budgie during installation due to its removal from the Arch repository; starting with this release, the NVIDIA proprietary drivers have been switched to 'nvidia-open' due to the upstream changes to NVIDIA drivers." TROMjaro, a Manjaro-based Linux distribution with a customised Xfce desktop, has been updated to version 2026.01.13. The new release returns to Unity-style layout (a layout introduced by Ubuntu's now abandoned Unity desktop) for Xfce. This forum post by the project's lead developer explains the reason: "2026 brings something new but also old to TROMjaro - the Unity layout style is back because we managed to fix an annoying thing with it. Let me explain. When I first discovered Linux I fell in love with Ubuntu's Unity. A desktop that had the apps icons on the left bar, then a thinner top bar with useful info and tray icons. If you maximized an app, the app's menu and window buttons were part of the top main bar, and this maximized the space for any maximized app. On top of this (pun intended) you could search through an app's menu to quickly access its settings and options. Again made so much sense. I can quickly search through huge menus for whatever I quickly needed. Lastly, Unity had all sorts of smart searches in their main app search, like you could search online, inside the folders, etc. It made so much sense that they decided to discontinue it. When I released TROMjaro with Xfce I realized that I can simulate the Unity Layout since Xfce is so damn easy to customize." The Linux Mint project has announced the release of Linux Mint 22.3. The Ubuntu-based distribution will receive support through to 2029 and introduces a new tool to help users troubleshoot problems. "The 'System Reports' tool received many new features and it was rebranded as 'System Information'. In addition to its 'System Information', 'System Reports' and 'Crash Reports' pages, the tool received four new pages to show you more information and help you troubleshoot common issues. The 'USB' page shows a detailed view of all plugged-in devices, including their type, name and ID (which uniquely identifies the device and its manufacturer). Devices are grouped by USB controller, so you can see where each device is plugged and compare its connection speed and power usage with the controller's maximum connection speed and total power capacity. This helps troubleshoot common USB issues such as slow transfers or random disconnections." ArchBANG Linux has been through many changes in recent times, including the renaming of ArchBANG, to GreenBANG and back to ArchBANG again. The most recent update involves a new desktop user interface, moving from the Openbox window manager to the labwc Wayland compositor. Inspired by Openbox, labwc is a window-stacking compositor for Wayland. The latest release of ArchBANG also comes with a new wmenu: "Quick post, have built and uploaded a new ISO image. Mostly package updates, also added wmenu which is the Wayland version of dmenu application launcher. If you want to pull up an application quicker than searching labwc root menu then this is for you. It is tied to Alt+F3, now this might seem odd, but bear with me. If as some of you might have a keyboard, laptop, MacBook, Chromebook that does not really have a Super (Windows) key, then this might just be a way in. From wmenu you can open a terminal/editor and make changes to labwc configuration, to change Super key to Alt if the need be. It is not as feature-rich as Rofi but light enough to get the job done. Now that I am happier with everything in ArchBang, time to break stuff. Will start working on making installer easier with fewer options. Over the coming weeks, look at giving ArchBang a new look." David Heinemeier Hansson has announced the release of Omarchy 3.3.0, an updated build of the project's Arch-based Linux distribution with Hyprland as the preferred window manager. It is intended for more advanced Linux users and developers. Besides a long list of additions and fixes, the new release also brings important updates to dictation, hibernation and themes: "Voxtype offers a variety of different local AI dictation models. You can install it using Install, AI, Dictation where the default is a 150 MB base English model. After it's installed, you can start dictating using Super + Ctrl + X. While dictating, you'll see a red microphone in the center of the top menu, which you can click to pick another model (or just run 'voxtype setup model' from terminal). Or right-click to edit the entire Voxtype configuration. With Linux running on a million different systems, there is varying levels of support for system sleep, so by default Omarchy will only show the options that work everywhere: lock, screensaver, restart, shutdown. But plenty of systems do support hibernation and suspend, so now you can enable both via Setup, System Sleep. Hibernation requires a swap subvolume of the same size as your physical RAM allotment. That'll automatically be set up when you run the 'Enable Hibernate' option. So too will configuration for suspend-to-hibernate after 30 minutes on systems that support it." The IPFire project has a new release, version 2.29 Core 199, which introduces improved wireless networking performance and enhances the intrusion prevention system: "IPFire now supports WiFi 7 and WiFi 6 for wireless access points. Although the hardware has been supported before, IPFire can now take advantage of the features that these new WiFi standards are bringing. The most notable features are: It is now possible to select the preferred WiFi mode, and IPFire will figure out the rest. 802.11be and 802.11ax are joining support for 802.11ac/agn. Channel bandwidths of up to 320 MHz will give you a bandwidth of over 5.7 Gbps for two spacial streams, or even a whopping 11.5 Gbps over four spacial streams. Over the air. IPFire will now automatically detect and enable any supported capabilities that the hardware supports. This used to be manually configurable as 'HT Capabilities' and 'VHT Capabilities'. Whereas that used to be a tedious and difficult process, we can now take advantage of all features that your hardware supports for a much more stable and faster WiFi network." Philip Müller has announced the release of Manjaro Linux 26, a major update of the project's set of rolling-release distributions with a choice of GNOME, KDE Plasma and Xfce desktops. Besides updates to GNOME 49 and KDE Plasma 6.5, the release introduces the latest long-term supported Linux kernel, version 6.18: "Manjaro 26.0 'Anh-Linh' released. Since we released 'Zetar' in April 2025 we have worked hard to get the next release of Manjaro out there. We call it 'Anh-Linh'. The GNOME edition has received several updates to GNOME 49 series. This includes a lot of fixes and polish when GNOME 49 originally was released in September 2025. The Plasma edition comes with the latest Plasma 6.5 series, Frameworks 6.21 and KDE Gear 25.12. It brings exciting new improvements to your desktop. Plasma 6.5 includes a number of highly-requested features. With our Xfce edition, we have now Xfce 4.20. Linux kernel 6.18 is used for this release, including the latest drivers available to date. With 6.12 LTS and 6.6 LTS we offer additional support for older hardware as needed." Arne Exton has announced the release of a new version of the "ArchEX" line of Exton Linux. Based on Arch Linux, build 260104 comes with the MATE desktop environment and includes the Calamares system installer: "I've made a new extra version of ArchEX with the MATE desktop environment. This ArchEX version replaces version 240101, which had Pantheon as DE. At the moment (260104) Pantheon doesn't work in Arch Linux. After a full system upgrade, the Pantheon menu is gone and you can't get it back. This ArchEX version has Calamares installed. Using Calamares means that you can install ArchEX MATE in any language. Everything will then be in your chosen language when the installation has completed. ArchEX with MATE works very well when running live on my six computers. Calamares is now installed also in build 260104. When the boot process is ready you will end up at LightDM's login page. Log in to the MATE desktop as the ordinary user 'user' with password 'live' or as 'root' with password 'root'. ArchEX build 260104 is now also for UEFI computers; before you can run ArchEX live you don't have to go into BIOS and change boot mode to 'Legacy Support'." Happy New Year! The minimal Peropesis distribution has a new release which introduces the PHP development language which is commonly used on web servers: "Peropesis 3.1 is released. In the new edition, part of the old software was updated and new software was installed. ... In the Peropesis 2.9 release the lighttpd web server was installed. In the Peropesis 3.1 release, an init script (/etc/init.d/lighttpd) was created, which is intended for managing the lighttpd web server. Instructions on how to use this init script have been placed in the newly created chapter of the User manual - Web Server lighttpd. Since the PHP programming language was installed in the Peropesis 3.1 release, the FastCGI module was activated in the lighttpd server, which creates an interface between the server and the PHP language. In addition, the CGI module was activated, which creates interfaces between the lighttpd server and programming languages such as Perl and Python." The distribution's team have also added new fielsystem tools, a command line AI chat program, and new support libraries. The release announcement offers additional details.
