The OPNsense project develops an operating system for firewalls and routers based on FreeBSD. The project is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a new release, OPNsense 25.1: "For an entire decade now, OPNsense is driving innovation through modularising and hardening the open source firewall, with simple and reliable firmware upgrades, multi-language support, fast adoption of upstream software updates as well as clear and stable 2-Clause BSD licensing. 25.1, nicknamed "Ultimate Unicorn", features numerous MVC/API conversions, improved security zones support and documentation, ZFS snapshot support, a new UI look with a light and dark theme, PHP 8.3, FreeBSD 14.2." The release announcement shares a detailed changelog along with migration notes for people performing upgrades from previous versions of the operating system. |
The Solus project develops an independent, rolling release distribution with a focus on desktop computing. The project has published Solus 4.7 (also labelled 2025-01-26) which features improved video card support and does away with the old software centre. "We encourage you to try one of the new software centres as a replacement for solus-sc (Solus Software Centre). A new software centre gets you out-of-the-box support for Flatpaks, and better app descriptions through Appstream metadata support. Our contributors and staff have been hard at work adding and fixing the metainfo.xml files used for Appstream support. Our goal is for every packaged GUI application to have a working metainfo.xml file, so that the software centres can show users all kinds of information about an app before they decide to install it. Curious Budgie, GNOME and Xfce users can install GNOME Software, while Plasma users should install Discover." Additional changes, along with screenshots, can be found in the project's release announcement. BSD Router Project (BSDRP) is an embedded free and open-source router distribution based on FreeBSD. The project's latest release is version 1.994 and uses the FreeBSD 15 development branch. "Starting with this version, BSDRP requires at least a 4GB disk. If you installed BSDRP on a 2GB disk, upgrading will not be possible. However, if it was installed on a 4GB or larger disk, you can resize the system partition using the following command: 'system resize-system-slice 3921924'. New features: This is an intermediate release preparing the branch 2 that will use the poudriere-image framework in place of NanoBSD. Based on FreeBSD 15-head 8f6b66a9d3f and ports tree. New packages: dns/dnsmasq (will replace isc-dhcp44 and dhcprelya); Python 3.11 (this one added more than 100M of libs). Removed packages: freevrrpd (carp is now supporting VRRP mode); ucarp (no more conflict once carp enabled in VRRP mode); net/aquantia-atlantic-kmod (does not build on latest head). Deprecated packages (will be removed in next release): isc-dhcp44 (use dnsmasq, kea requires 300MB disk space with its dependencies); dhcprelya (use dnsmasq)." NEW • Distribution Release: Rhino Linux 2025.1 |
Rate this project
|
The Rhino Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu and offers its users a rolling release. The project's latest snapshot is version 2025.1 and it offers a number of upgrades, including dynamic workspaces and a new welcome application. "One of our more exciting changes will be the inclusion of our brand-new Hello Rhino application. Written in Rust and using IcedTK, this application serves to help provide useful links to our homepage, blog, Discord community and documentation. Hello Rhino will automatically launch after post installation to help jumpstart the Rhino journey. Hello Rhino was created by a new contributor, so we would like to extend a big thank you to Sundaram Krishnan for making this possible. The Unicorn Desktop finally has dynamic workspaces, bringing extra efficiency and flexibility to the already powerful Unicorn Desktop. Previously, with static workspaces, you were restricted to a maximum of four, or had to manually create and manage the number of spaces yourself. Unicorn will now automatically create a new workspace each time the previous ones have an application open on them, and once there are no applications open on a workspace, it will be destroyed. The decision to incorporate this feature draws inspiration from desktop environments like GNOME, and the expandable workflow they provide." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): Rhino-Linux-2025.1-amd64.iso (2,672MB, pkglist). |

The Linux Mint team have published an update to the project's 22.x series. The new release, Linux Mint 22.1, modernizes the APT packaging tools, introduces new power modes to help uses find a balance between battery life and performance, and Cinnamon now provides a Night Light service which will reduce blue light exposure. "Choosing a power mode allows you to balance between power saving and performance optimization. The following power modes are available on all computers: Power-saver mode - limits performance to conserve energy; Balanced mode - adjusts performance based on your needs. On supported systems, an additional Performance mode is available. This mode maximizes performance at the cost of increased power consumption. Power-saving modes reduce performance but can extend battery life, reduce heat generation, lower CPU frequency, and decrease fan noise. Note that the system may override user settings based on the selected mode to adjust display brightness or make temporary adjustments to further reduce power consumption or enhance performance. In Cinnamon, you can select the power mode by navigating to Preferences, Power Management." The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project has published an update for its 6.x series which fixes a serious security vulnerability. "The vulnerabilities described below were identified during an external security audit by Radically Open Security and disclosed responsibly to our team. We are not aware of these attacks being used against Tails users until now. These vulnerabilities can only be exploited by a powerful attacker who has already exploited another vulnerability to take control of an application in Tails. If you want to be extra careful and used Tails a lot since January 9 without upgrading, we recommend that you do a manual upgrade instead of an automatic upgrade. Prevent an attacker from installing malicious software permanently. In Tails 6.10 or earlier, an attacker who has already taken control of an application in Tails could then exploit a vulnerability in Tails Upgrader to install a malicious upgrade and permanently take control of your Tails. Doing a manual upgrade would erase such malicious software." The project also introduced new features, such as detecting when a USB thumb drive might be corrupted or have damaged partitions. Additional details can be found in the distribution's release announcement. On-screen keyboard now comes up within the installer instead of taking up half the screen Network check has been removed. Nobara can be installed completely offline from any ISO downloaded. This can happen as a regression because we shipped Vulkan built from git. Moving forward we have changed that.
