Franco Conidi has announced the release of SysLinuxOS 12.3, an updated version of the project's Debian-based distribution designed primarily for system integrators and administrators. This version is based on Debian 12 and comes with a long-term supported 6.5 version of the Linux kernel. "SysLinuxOS is updated to version 12.3. In this version, numerous bugs have been fixed and it also brings with it several improvements to make it much more intuitive and easy to use. Many changes are under the hood, while others are purely aesthetic, and they improve the menu and icons in both GNOME and MATE desktop environments. SysLinuxOS is a distribution for system integrators and network administrators, it must be chameleonic and therefore have tools that help to interface in a mixed Windows/Linux environment. In this update, I have excluded two or three programs in favor of others that I believe are more useful for greater interoperability. I have therefore added WoeUSB, Teams for Linux, Webex, Github Desktop, Wiregui, Timeshift. As you can easily imagine, there is a lot of work behind this, so I apologize in advance if you encounter any small problems." Vanilla OS is an immutable operating system. While earlier releases were based on Ubuntu, the current development branch is based on Debian. The latest development snapshot features several other changes, including a new approach to handling atomic updates: "The day has finally come, we are proud to announce the release of Vanilla OS 2 'Orchid' beta. Orchid is a complete rewrite of the project, aiming to provide a stable, secure, fast, and user-friendly operating system without compromises. We have reevaluated the project from its roots, incorporating the extensive feedback received with the first version. ... A Root, our implementation of A/B Partitioning, facilitates updates in an immutable system through atomic transactions between two partitions, ensuring a consistently functioning system. In Vanilla OS 2 Orchid, we introduced ABRoot v2, a complete rewrite of the project designed to be more reliable and faster. Transactions now occur through OCI image expansion instead of applying package updates, ensuring the system receives an exact copy of the tested image. ABRoot v2 brings additional features, such as the ability to dump the system state for support in case of issues, switching between flavors without data loss by changing the base image, auto-recovery of the ABRoot file system structure, and more." The UBports team has announced a new update to the project's 20.04 series for mobile devices. The new update, 20.04 OTA-4 adjusts notification behaviour, makes it possible to assign each contact their own ringtone, and makes it easier to switch themes. "Ubuntu Touch is the privacy and freedom-respecting mobile operating system by UBports. Today we are happy to announce the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-4, our 4th stable update to the new Ubuntu 20.04 LTS based system. This release of Ubuntu Touch is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, so latest Ubuntu 20.04 LTS security updates have landed in this OTA. ... We have always had a system-wide dark mode in the system. However, in the past, you had to use a third-party app to access the necessary switch. In this OTA, we've added a new toggle switch in the System Settings to allow you to change it without the need of an additional app. To access it, go to System Settings > Background & Appearance. For now, it will affect applications only, and not the other system components (such as notifications). Also, you'll have to restart the applications for the change to take effect. NetBSD is a highlight portable operating system with a focus on having a clean, minimal design. The project's latest development snapshot is probably the last release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. "Since RC1 there have been numerous changes, including major updates to external software included in the release: Postfix, OpenSSH, and the firmware used for Raspberry PI devices. Various issues with RC1 have been fixed, including installer (sysinst) crashes. Lots of architecture specific fixes happend, e.g. various toolchain changes for VAX (so it is now finaly self-hosting again), and kernel changes for macppc, netwinder, and alpha. For RC3 only few (relatively) minor changes were made, including https certificate verification in libfetch (which is used by pkg_ad(1)), and also improvements to the EFI bootloader to better deal with booting from CD (or in virtual machines ISO images), plus lots of various bug fixes. NetBSD is a highly portable operating system which offers a minimal and clean design. The project has published its second (and probably final) release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. Among the enhancements in this snapshot are cyptographic updates and an experimental implementation of WireGuard. "Compatibility with WireGuard: A new interface, wg(4), provides a VPN tunnel compatible with the WireGuard specification. The driver is experimental and needs more testing. A userspace implementation using a rump kernel server is also included, see wg-userspace(4)/ The NetBSD implementation works with WireGuard implementations used by commercial VPN providers, Android, Linux, and more. Stronger, faster cryptography: Added an implementation of the Adiantum cipher for efficient disk encryption with cgd(4) on systems without AES acceleration. Added support for shared keys to cgdconfig(8), allowing multiple derived subkeys to be used across multiple drives. Switched the default password hashing algorithm to Argon2id, winner of the Password Hashing Competition. The algorithm's hardness automatically scales with system performance. Added support for Argon2id to cgdconfig(8) for use in password-based disk encryption. The kernel now takes advantage of CPU acceleration and vectorization for common cryptographic algorithms on x86 and Arm, including AES and ChaCha. All in-kernel implementations of AES are now constant-time on all architectures. Swap encryption is now automatic using the vm.swap_encrypt=1 sysctl(8) variable." 3CX Phone System is a specialist, Debian-based Linux distribution designed to run a complete unified communications platform. The 3CX client, included in the distribution, can also be installed separately on most hardware as well as the cloud. It provides a complete open standards-based IP PBX and phone system that works with popular SIP trunks and IP phones. It will automatically configure all supported peripherals and it also comes with clients for Windows, OS X, iOS and Android. The ISO image includes a free license for the 3CX PBX edition. The ISO image contains the standard Debian installer which installs a minimal system with the nginx web server, PostgreSQL database, iptables firewall and Secure Shell. DEKUVE is a Linux distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch, featuring a customised Xfce desktop. Some of its features include a custom launcher for finding applications, browsing files or running commands, a performance-control applet that provides real-time control over the computer system's energy profile, a custom themes tool with an ability to transform the look and feel of the entire system, and out-of-the box support for Flatpak packages.
