Rate this project
|
OPNsense is a FreeBSD-based specialist operating system designed for firewalls and routers. The project's latest release is OPNsense 22.1; it is based on FreeBSD 13 and it improves boot speed while removing older, insecure cryptography components. "22.1, nicknamed 'Observant Owl', features the upgrade to FreeBSD 13, switch to logging supporting RFC 5424 with severity filtering, improved tunable sysctl value integration, faster boot sequence and interface initiation and dynamic IPv6 host alias support amongst others. On the flip side major operating system changes bear risk for regression and feature removal, e.g. no longer supporting insecure cryptography in the kernel for IPsec and switching the Realtek vendor driver back to its FreeBSD counterpart which does not yet support the newer 2.5G models. Circular logging support has also been removed. Here are the full patch notes against version 21.7.7: improved visibility and flexibility of tunables; move multiple sysctl manipulations to tunables framework to allow overriding them; prevent more than one default route by default; sync recovery utility contents with FreeBSD 13...." Parted Magic is a small live CD/USB/PXE with its elemental purpose being to partition hard drives. The project has published a new update which addresses issues with Secure Erase functionality. The release announcement on the project's news page reads: "Parted Magic 2022_01_18. This version of Parted Magic updates the kernel to Linux 5.16.1 and fixes a few minor problems with the Secure Erase and NVME Secure Erase programs. Manufacturers are starting to get a bit carried away with the length of names given to drives. The names are now limited to 15 characters, so the Secure Erase GUI should now fit well on everybody’s screen. If there is still any doubt to what drive is what, do a mouse over and the entire name will be shown in the tool tip. We are using the bleeding edge NVIDIA 510.39.01 driver because it’s the only driver that will compile with the 5.16.1 kernel." Some of the package upgrades include X.Org Server 1.20.14, Firefox 91.5.0, LibreOffice 7.2.3, PulseAudio 15.0, Ruby 3.0.3, Samba 4.15.3, Nano 6.0, SysVInit, 3.01, Python 3.9.10, Wayland 1.20.0, curl 7.81.0, among many others. Parted Magic can be purchased from the distribution's online store for US$13. A list of included software can be found in the distribution's package list. |

The Slackware Linux distribution has been slowly gearing up toward a new stable release for a while now, gradually releasing new development snapshots over the past eleven months. The project has announced a new (and final) release candidate, tagged Slackware Linux 15.0 RC3. "Good hello, and welcome to the third and final release candidate for Slackware 15.0. We're 99% frozen at this point and are mostly looking for regression or other bug reports that might be able to be addressed before this goes stable. Of course, the management here reserves the right to make exceptions... that 5.15.15 kernel version has a nice ring to it. If your requests didn't make it into this iteration, perhaps we will revisit them for the next -current cycle. Some were just a little too late but will more than likely be needed next time (I'm looking at Didier's grubconfig), while others are just out of scope for the main tree where I like to abide by YAGNI as much as possible. Anyway, let's get some testing done and we'll be there soon. Enjoy!" Besides shipping with an updated base system, the new version also adds the Ventoy utility, an open-source tool for creating bootable USB drives from ISO image files: "The Emmabuntüs Collective is happy to announce the release of the Emmabuntüs 'Debian' Edition 4 1.01 update (32-bit and 64-bit), based on the Debian 11.2 'Bullseye' distribution and supporting both Xfce and LXQt desktop environments. This new update of our distribution brings the addition of the Ventoy utility as part of our re-use campaign launched in early September 2020 in collaboration with our friends from Debian-Facile and Tugaleres.com in France, as well as Blabla Linux in Belgium, as we have just put online a second version of our refurbishing USB flash drive now based on Ventoy. GeckoLinux is a member of the openSUSE family of distributions with a special focus on making the operating system desktop-ready out of the box. The project has publisehd a new set of both Static and Rolling editions along with a Next series of editions. The project's news page offers details on the new install images: "Thanks to some important improvements from the Calamares installer project, and after lots and lots of trial and error to tweak the GeckoLinux configuration, inclusion of openSUSE's famous integration of the GRUB bootloader with Btrfs and Snapper snapshots has finally arrived in GeckoLinux. This also required a major rework of the default Btrfs subvolume layout, allowing for effective snapshot rollbacks without manual manipulation of the bootloader or default subvolumes. Important note: When performing a rollback in GeckoLinux for the first time the command is slightly different from vanilla openSUSE: 'sudo snapper --ambit classic rollback' (please see the wiki entry). Another important improvement to all GeckoLinux editions is the addition of improved installation logic based on whether the system is running in EFI or legacy BIOS mode, leading to much better reliability during future GRUB bootloader updates."
