Emmabuntüs is a light, Debian-based distribution intended for less experienced users. The project's latest release includes content filtering controls for screening on-line content. IPFire is a small Linux distribution for firewalls and other networking devices. The distribution has published a new release which upgrades the kernel to version 6.1 and includes support for accessing 4G and 5G networks. "The Qualcomm MSM Interface is a proprietary interface increasingly used by 4G and 5G cellular modems. Commencing with this Core Update, IPFire supports interacting with such modems, thus significantly expanding its hardware compatibility to QMI-only cellular modems, and providing a faster and more modern interface. Thanks to Michael for implementing this feature. On that occasion, he also refactored related networking code. Arne has updated the Linux kernel to the most recent stable series, 6.1.11, which has become the new long-term series. Aside from the usual improvements such major kernel updates bring like bug fixes, improved hardware support and security improvements, we took the occasion to bring several new hardening changes to IPFire users: System calls permitting processes to read or write other processes' memory are no longer provided by the kernel. On EFI systems supporting it, the firmware is now instructed to wipe all memory when rebooting, to hamper cold boot attacks. Landlock support has been enabled. GCC's 'latent entropy' plugin has been disabled, since it does not generate cryptographically secure entropy." Additional details are presented in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): ipfire-2.27-core173-x86_64.iso (378MB, torrent, pkglist). |

Barry Kauler has announced the release of EasyOS 5.0, code-named "Kirkstone", a major update of the project's lightweight, experimental Linux distribution: "EasyOS 'Kirkstone' series version 5.0. Almost all of the packages in EasyOS 'Kirkstone' series are compiled from source, using a fork of OpenEmbedded (OE) 'Kirkstone' release. Almost all package versions are updated, compared with the 'Dunfell' series. Apart from new package versions, many bug fixes and many improvements, there is one other major improvement - the abandonment of 'langpack' language translation packages, as well as abandonment of language-specific builds. Now, there is just one file to download, the required language is chosen at first bootup, and the user interface is then rendered in that language. More or less, French is just about complete, second is German. MoManager is a GUI translation tool, that has its roots ten years ago in Puppy Linux; it has been extensively rewritten to make it an easy experience for anyone to contribute translations." Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of the beta release of openSUSE 15.5, a distribution also known as "Leap" and developed in parallel with SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE). The release is available for the x86_64, aarch64, PowerPC and s390x architectures. "Leap 15.5 reaches beta phase. The version will offer some newer software versions, but the release is not a feature release. Packages like a newer Mesa and having the OpenH264 repository enabled by default for all new Leap 15.5 installations is planned. Another new element for Leap 15.5 is a migration option. A new single-click migration streamlines a migration process that took three steps in previous openSUSE Leap releases. The users that want to migrate from previous releases or 15.5 alpha can install openSUSE-repos-Leap, which comes with the repo definition and it utilizes zypp services for repo management, although this feature is not enabled by default. However, a zypper-migration-plugin implementation as the main request on the Graphical User Interface has been fulfilled into a separate element related to SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5." Neptune is a GNU/Linux distribution for desktops, based on Debian. The project has published a new testing snapshot, Neptune 7.9 beta 1. The release announcement reads: "As by our tradition, the Neptune 7.9 beta 1 ISO image is now available on time for the Carnaval. This one comes based on Debian 'Testing' with the latest Plasma 5.27 (beta) as well as Linux kernel 6.1.8. For the first time we ship Plasma Wayland as session as well as Flatpak with activated Flathub repository for a vast amount of apps available for Linux. This version is a bit bigger, 3GB in size, due to some apps relying on Qt 5 libraries and the default being Qt 6. We are looking into it if we can reduce the size further but we did already some tweaking to reduce the size. Known bugs: a Btrfs installation ends up with a read-only mount after installation (this still needs fixing in Calamares). Linux kernel 6.1.8 has issues with AMD GPUs and external displays staying black after stand-by and wake-up; this is fixed in kernel 6.1.9 and higher - Debian 'Sid' has 6.1.11 already so it should be fixed soon." Univention Corporate Server (UCS) is an enterprise-class distribution based on Debian. The distribution's 5.0 series has been updated, bringing new features, improved performance, and some new security options. "Determine group membership of users faster: The group membership of a user in UCS is now conveyed via the 'memberof' attribute of the user. This means you no longer have to search across all groups for a user but can access a cache on the user object that contains this information. This considerably speeds up the search for group membership. Synchronisation of password history: With the new UCS version, to prevent the use of passwords that have already been used, a user's passwords that have been used in the past are stored in a history. For this purpose, UCS saves hashes of the passwords in the history. In the past, the history was saved individually by the system that processes the password change - this can be OpenLDAP (for changes via UDM and Kerberos), Samba4 (for changes via desktop systems in the UCS domain) or Active Directory (when using the AD connector)." Tomáš Matějíček has announced the availability of Slax 15.0.1 (based on Slackware's "Current" branch) and 11.6.0 (based on Debian 11.6.0). Both new releases of the project's minimalist live distribution bring updated software as well as improved persistence: "I am excited to announce the release of Slax's latest versions - Slax version 15.0.1, based on Slackware 'Current' and Slax version 11.6.0, based on Debian 11.6. Both versions are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit processor architectures. One of the biggest improvements in Slax 15.0.1 and 11.6.0 are updated packages. Another key feature of the new Slax versions is the use of the newest DynFileFS which implements how 'persistent changes' are stored on writable media. This means that when you run Slax from an USB device, all the changes you make to the system will be stored in a special file (actually, a set of four files) on the USB disk, making it possible to use Slax on the go. In the past, this feature was limited to a total size of 4GB, but with the newest DynFileFS, you can store up to 16GB of data." Read the full release announcement for further details. |
3CX Phone System is a specialist, Debian-based Linux distribution designed to run a complete unified communications platform. The 3CX client, included in the distribution, can also be installed separately on most hardware as well as the cloud. It provides a complete open standards-based IP PBX and phone system that works with popular SIP trunks and IP phones. It will automatically configure all supported peripherals and it also comes with clients for Windows, OS X, iOS and Android. The ISO image includes a free license for the 3CX PBX edition. The ISO image contains the standard Debian installer which installs a minimal system with the nginx web server, PostgreSQL database, iptables firewall and Secure Shell. Options not relevant to 3CX have been removed from the distribution. Download the installation ISO image from here: debian-amd64-netinst-3cx.iso (628MB). |
