NEW • Distribution Release: siduction 2024.1.0 |
Rate this project
|
The siduction distribution is a desktop-oriented operating system and live medium based on the "Unstable" branch of Debian. The rolling release project's latest snapshot, version 2024.1.0, provides several desktop upgrades, including KDE Plasma 6. "The flavors we offer for siduction 2024.1.0 include KDE Plasma 6.2.4.1, LXQt 2.1.0, Xfce 4.20, Xorg and noX. GNOME, MATE and Cinnamon have not made it again, as there is no maintainer for them within siduction. They may return one day or not. Of course, they are still installable from the repository. Plasma 6 has now nearly fully arrived in 'Unstable' and 'Testing' and will be available for Debian 13 'Trixie'. Although Wayland is the default session type in Plasma 6, we have opted for X11 as the default, as Calamares currently does not take the desired keyboard layout under Wayland. This could have severe consequences in encrypted installations. However, you can at any time switch to Wayland in SDDM. As existing users, you've likely already upgraded to Plasma 6 and now the current Plasma generation is also available for fresh installations." Further details can be found in the release announcement. NEW • Distribution Release: postmarketOS 24.12 |
Rate this project
|
postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project's latest release, version 24.12, introduces some key changes, specifically functioning cameras on Android phones. "One thing that people have been asking us over and over is, will it be possible to use cameras with postmarketOS on Androids? While of course we all would like to see that, this is a significant challenge for postmarketOS and other Linux Mobile projects that prefer using the mainline Linux kernel and don't use the proprietary Android userspace blobs for interacting with cameras. But as you can guess from the headline, there has been a significant breakthrough: the Pixel 3A and Fairphone 5 both have front and a rear camera working now, and somebody even reported being able to record video on the FP5. One of the two rear cameras of the Pocophone F1 also works now. As you would expect, this is not on-par with Android's implementation yet and some of the media has a bit of a retro appeal at the moment. Nevertheless, this is a major achievement! Thanks to Robert, Richard, Luca, Joel, Alistair as well as the libcamera and Megapixels folks!" Additional details and changes can be found in the project's release announcement. A list of supported devices and install options are provided. |

CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It focuses on speed and security optimisations. The project's latest release focuses on performance and Bluetooth support: "One of the most notable changes is that the default kernel is now optimized using AutoFDO. Profiling workloads are run through a diverse set of tests, including sysbench, CachyOS Benchmarker, Git operations, kernel compilation, and several miscellaneous benchmarks. Currently, the profiling is done on a Zen5 machine, but in the future, we plan to support merging multiple profiles for even broader optimization. RustiCL has replaced the default OpenCL driver in the Mesa stack, bringing improved performance and compatibility. Additionally, we now use scx_loader for sched-ext scheduler management in the kernel-manager. This allows for more seamless switching between schedulers and ensures they are properly configured using a dedicated configuration file. We've also enabled Bluetooth support, enhancing the user experience for most users." The project's release announcement offers further details. Grml is a minimal, live distribution which is based on Debian. Grml 2024.12 drops support for x86 (i686) computers while expanding support for 64-bit ARM machines. "We are proud to announce our new stable release version 2024.12, code-named 'Adventgrenze'. This Grml release brings you fresh software packages from Debian 'Trixie' and enhanced hardware support, and it addresses known bugs from previous releases. With version 2024.12, Grml, for the first time ever, supports 64-bit ARM CPUs (arm64). As previously announced, releases for 32-bit x86 PCs have been discontinued. With the grml32 flavor removed, we've introduced UEFI 32-bit boot support on our Grml amd64 flavor to ensure 64-bit PCs with 32-bit firmware can use this release. New features: grml-lang - support language settings for UK/GB; grml-vnet - replace tunctl + brctl with ip(8); grml-paste - the Grml paste service is gone, the script uses paste.debian.net now; cpu-screen: replace C source implementation with implementation in Perl (to get arch all packages) + hide...." Rate this project
|
The IPFire project develops a minimal operating system for routers and firewalls. The project's latest release, IPFire 2.29 Core 190, provides a kernel update and begins phasing out support for RSA encryption: "We are starting the path to remove RSA from the IPFire web UI and SSH. On new installations, RSA keys won't be generated any more. On existing installations, this update removes the RSA key from the web UI, but we keep the RSA key for SSH to not break any monitoring tools, etc. We still believe that RSA is strong enough to be used in today's world, but since there is sufficient browser and SSH client support for Elliptic Curve Cryptography which is considered to be much stronger, we want to raise the bar for any potential future attacks on RSA. IPFire is also now using post-quantum cryptography for SSH key exchanges: Streamlined NTRU Prime sntrup761 and X25519 with SHA-512 (sntrup761x25519-sha512) and Module-Lattice-based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism (MK-KEM, mlkem768x25519-sha256) have been enabled." The Kali Linux project has announced a new snapshot of the project's rolling release distribution. The latest version, 2024.4, upgrades Python to version 3.12, drops support for 32-bit x86 kernels and offers GNOME 47. The release announcement offers a summary: "The summary of the changelog since the 2024.3 release from September is: Python 3.12 - new default Python version (au revoir pip, hello pipx); the end of the i386 kernel and images - farewell x86 (images), but not goodbye (packages); deprecations in the SSH client - DSA keys, reminder about using ssh1 if required; Raspberry Pi imager customizations support - able to alter settings at write time; GNOME 47 - now able to synchronize your favorite colours; Kali forums refresh - new heart of the community home. Kali NetHunter - updates to the app, kernels, installer, store and website; new tools - 14 new shiny toys added (and countless updated). Python 3.12 is now the default Python interpreter. While it was released upstream a year ago, it took a bit of time to become the default in Debian, and then even more time to make it to Kali Linux, but finally it’s here. Every new version of Python brings along some deprecations or subtle changes of behavior, which in turn breaks some Python packages." Window Maker Live is a Debian-based Linux distribution that applies the Window Maker window manager as the default graphical user interface. The project has released version 12.8 which is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm". "A selection of TeX Live packages for a decent TeX system, and auxiliary tools like AUCTeX for Emacs and the vim-latexsuite were also included. All of Bookworm's outdated GNUstep packages were replaced with current versions recompiled from their still up to date Debian/Trixie sources. The included GNUstep programs are more tightly integrated in the desktop. Only seeing is believing: The GNUstep packages were augmented by a few GUI themes demonstrating GNUstep's theming capabilities. The current Emacs release 29.4 has been added with its GNUstep based GUI. This emacs-gnustep variant is provided as a self-contained component and does not rely on nor conflict with the official Debian emacs packages. The bare bones Surf browser has been replaced with otter-browser since the former's AppArmor based security sandboxing proved too restrictive for casual usage. Also, the GNUstep based netsurf port WebSurf.app was added." The release announcement offers additional details. Philip Müller has announced the release of Manjaro Linux 24.2.0, the latest stable version of the project's rolling-release distribution with separate GNOME, KDE Plasma and Xfce editions. The new release updates the default Linux kernel to version 6.12: "Manjaro Linux 24.2 'Yonada' released. Since we released Xahea in October 2024, we worked hard to get the next release of Manjaro out there. We call it 'Yonada'. The GNOME edition has received several updates to GNOME 47 series. This includes a lot of fixes and polish when GNOME 47.2 was originally was in September 2024. The Plasma edition comes with the latest Plasma 6.2 series, Frameworks 6.8 and KDE Gear 24.08. Plasma 6 has come into its own over the last two releases. The wrinkles that always come with a major migration have been ironed out, and it's time to start delivering on the promises of the new Qt 6 and Wayland technology platforms that Plasma is built on top of. Significant changes: initial support for loongarch64 was added. As always, make sure to use 'apk upgrade --available' when switching between major versions. OpenSSH service will automatically restart when upgrading to be able to accept new connections. The linux-firmware is now compressed with zstd. Users running custom-built kernels need to ensure that CONFIG_FW_LOADER_COMPRESS_ZSTD=y is present in the kernel configuration. Users with / and /usr on separate filesystems (which is unsupported) need to take special care." The release announcement offers additional details and upgrade instructions. NEW • Distribution Release: EasyOS 6.5 |

Barry Kauler has announced the release of EasyOS 6.5. The EasyOS distribution features custom container technology called Easy Containers which can run applications or the entire desktop environment in a container. The project also includes tools for installing AppImage and Flatpak packages. Users can also set up containers to run other distributions: "The Scarthgap-series is built with packages compiled in a fork of OpenEmbedded, and optimised for EasyOS, but a small package repository; only about 1800 packages. However, more packages can be installed via Appi, the AppImage manager, and Flapi, the Flatpak manager. There is yet another avenue for adding packages to Scarthgap; another Linux distribution can be run in a container and within that container there is access to the entire package repository of that distribution. Easy Scarthgap can run Easy Daedalus in a container, which means that you don't really need to run Easy Daedalus as a separate distribution." Additional information can be found in the release announcement and in the release notes. Download: easy-6.5-amd64.img (953MB, MD5, pkglist). |

The FreeBSD team have announced the release of FreeBSD 14.2. The new release includes several minor changes, mostly in the realm of updated hardware drivers, an update to OpenZFS 2.2.6, and a reduction in size to the boot loader. "The BIOS boot loader added back support for gzip and bzip2, but removed support for graphics mode (by default) to address size problems; the EFI boot loader is unchanged with support for all of those; lots of improvements to the network stack, including performance improvements and bug fixes for the sctp(4) stack; descriptors returned by sctp_peeloff(2) now inherit capabilities from the parent socket; AIM (Adaptive Interrupt Moderation) support has been added to the igc(4) driver, this feature has also been added to the lem(4), em(4) and igb(4) drivers; a major regression in UDP performance introduced in FreeBSD 12.0, including NFS over UDP, is believed to be fixed with this change; the LinuxKPI, particularly for 802.11, has been enhanced to improve the stability of wireless drivers such as iwlwifi(4)...."
