Mageia is a general purpose, independent desktop distribution from the Mandriva family of projects. The project's latest release is version 9 which includes improves to the installer, package management, and minimal install size of the distribution. "Smaller disk footprint - the size of the minimal install (when disabling the recommended packages) has been reduced, it's the smallest since Mageia 4; the RPM database has switched to SQLite - the RPM database no longer uses the old and unmaintained Berkeley DB, it now uses the modern SQLite, conversion is performed during upgrade from Mageia 8; NFS support is done using system tools rather than our 15 years old forked NFS code, thus gaining support for NFSv4 and co; when using an HTTP server, it's now possible to specify a port different than the default 80; the stage1 images are compressed with zstd instead of gzip; lots of bug fixes and improvements in the partitioner; add 'downloader=curl' in order to switch from wget to curl for downloading packages; the rescue system has been enhanced; live ISO image - the NetworkManager system service is now enabled by default on the Plasma live ISO image (this was already done for the GNOME and Xfce live ISO iimages in previous releases) - this allows network connections to be managed via the Plasma system settings tool as well as by the traditional Mageia network management tools." Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest release is Kali Linux 2023.3. "Today we are delighted to introduce our latest release of Kali, 2023.3. This release blog post does not have the most features in it, as a lot of the changes have been behind-the-scenes, which brings a huge benefit to us and an indirect positive effect to you as end-users. It always goes without saying, but there are a number of new packages and tools as well as the standard updates. If you want to see what's new for yourself download or upgrade if you have an existing Kali Linux installation. The highlights of the changelog since the 2023.2 release from May: Internal Infrastructure - Major stack changes is under way; Kali Autopilot - The automation attack framework has had an major overhaul; New Tools - 9 new tools added this time round! With the release of Debian 12 which came out this summer, we took this opportunity to re-work, re-design, and re-architecture our infrastructure. It is as massive as it sounds, and should not be a surprise that its not yet complete! This is where a good amount of our focus has been for this release-cycle (and also the next one unfortunately)." Ferdinand Thommes has announced the release of siduction 2023.1.0, the new stable version of the project's distribution based on Debian "Sid" (the "unstable" branch) and featuring a choice of KDE Plasma, LXQt and Xfce desktops: "The siduction team is very proud to present an unscheduled release for a special occasion. Debian, whose unstable branch some of us have been following for over 20 years, celebrates its 30th birthday on 2023-08-16 and we think that is worthy of all honor. Debian is the second oldest distribution after Slackware, and is solely supported by the people involved, without a company standing in the background or someone at the top deciding where things go. Debian is considered the 'universal operating system' because of the many architectures supported to this day and the stability of their releases is legendary. The flavours we offer for siduction 2023.1.0 are KDE Plasma 5.27.7.1, LXQt 1.3.0, Xfce 4.18, X.Org and noX. GNOME, MATE and Cinnamon did not make it again this time because there is no maintainer within siduction for them." Here are the complete release notes. Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd. The project's latest release is Devuan 5.0.0 "Daedalus". The release notes share highlights of the new version. "xserver-xorg-core now uses libseat1 to control rootless startx and access to input and video devices - this has several advantages, the most significant being that it removes the dbus dependency from xserver-xorg-core; libseat1 can use either seatd or elogind as a backend; if you need to override the default choice (autodiscovery), use the LIBSEAT_BACKEND environment variable; if you are using seatd as the backend, ensure the user is a member of the video group - this is only relevant to running startx as a user, X.Org run as root by a display manager is unaffected; users can now enjoy a Wayland desktop without elogind by installing libpam-ck-connector, sway and seatd; ensure the relevant user is a member of the 'video' group and run Sway from the terminal." Window Maker Live is a Debian-based Linux distribution that applies the Window Maker window manager as the default graphical user interface. The project's latest release is based on Debian 12.1 "Bookworm". "This release is based on stable Debian 12.1 'Bookworm'. The current Window Maker 0.95.9 is used as default window manager and exclusive desktop session option. The additional Xfce desktop session option was removed. Selected components and utilities of Xfce, MATE and LXQt were seamlessly integrated with Window Maker. A fail-safe mode session option was added for troubleshooting needs. The GTK widget libraries have been recompiled with the gtk3-classic patches. The login manager is now LightDM instead of the former wmlive-gdm. The default web browsers are Pale Moon and Surf. As mail messaging client, Claws-Mail has been chosen. Most wmlive-specific scripts have been localized using machine translation for about 17 of the most common European languages used worldwide. The default init system is now systemd instead of SysVInit. As it turned out, systemd has become the de-facto standard init system over time and trying to circumvent and replace it with SysVInit while maintaining the same levels of functionality has become increasingly difficult and laborious." The release notes also affirm the distribution has moved from SysV init to systemd. Download (MD5): wmlive-bookworm-0.95.9-0_amd64.iso (2,297MB, pkglist). |

Rhino Linux is an Ubuntu-based distribution which offers a rolling release upgrade approach. The distribution's first stable release is available for x86_64, aarm64, Pine64 phones and tablets like the PinePhone, and Raspberry Pi computers. One of the key features of the new 2023.1 release is the unified meta package manager which is called rhino-pkg and can work with Deb, Pacstall, and portable package formats: "hino-pkg (rpk), which is a meta-package manager that combines apt, pacstall, flatpak, and snap into a nice little UI that can be used to install, remove, search, and upgrade all package managers at once. This was also my first time dabbling with i18n, and since it's not a large program, we have translated it into (as of the 6th of August, 2023) 14 different languages along with English, so that hopefully every user can understand what it's doing in their native language."
