Bryan Poerwo has announced the availability of EndeavourOS 2021.08.27, the latest stable version of the project's rolling-release Arch Linux-based distribution with Xfce as the default desktop. This release brings major changes to the Calamares system installer: "The changes for Calamares are the most significant ones made on this release. In comparison to our previous releases, this release brings us to a higher level and we are confident to say that this ISO image is a milestone step towards our future. The changes made are complete overhaul under the hood of Calamares with a significant speed increase in installation as the most stellar improvement. This was achieved by throwing our previous system entirely out of the window and building the ISO image from scratch, which resulted in an installer that is fast, light, easy to maintain, easy to add new features in and a hugely improved user experience. Test results did clock an online install time from three to fifteen minutes, depending on the available internet speed." See the release announcement for further information and screenshots. Version 10 of LibreELEC, a specialist Linux distribution that runs the Kodi media centre on many popular minicomputers, has been released: "The final version of LibreELEC 10.0.0 has been released, bringing Kodi (Matrix) 19.1 to LibreELEC users. Users of LibreELEC 10 Beta or RC1 get an automatic update to the final version. LibreELEC 9.2 setups will not be automatically updated, you will need to manually update. We can offer stable and good working versions for Allwinner, Generic and Rockchip devices. The RPi4 is also in good shape but the codebase is rather new, so it is not polished yet (keep reading for details). Despite a long development period, there is still a major bug remaining. When you use profiles, LibreELEC's Settings Add-on can crash while switching to another profile. The issue is known, but we have currently no fix for it. So if you depend on profiles, you cannot properly use LibreELEC 10." Read the full release announcement for more details and known issues. LibreELEC 10.0.0 is available for Raspberry Pi, Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, NXP and "Generic" devices; here is the quick link for the last one on the list: LibreELEC-Generic.x86_64-10.0.0.img.gz (262MB). |

The Ubuntu team has announced a new update to the distribution's install media and community editions. The new version is 20.04.3 and it includes bug fixes that have become available since 20.04 was launched along with support for additional hardware. The release announcement reads: "Like previous LTS series, 20.04.3 includes hardware enablement stacks for use on newer hardware. This support is offered on all architectures. Ubuntu Server defaults to installing the GA kernel; however you may
select the HWE kernel from the installer bootloader. As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS." Rodolphe Bachelart has announced the availability of Voyager Live 11, a major new release of the project's Debian-based desktop Linux distribution with a customised GNOME desktop. This version is derived from the recently-released Debian 11 "Bullseye" and it comes with a variety of non-free firmware pre-installed. It ships with the GNOME 3.38 desktop, Linux kernel 5.10, Firefox 78.13 and LibreOffice 7.0. This time the release preserved the internal structure of Debian 11 to avoid any security issues and all the package updates come from official Debian mirrors. It is also a more international release as all languages and translations have been preserved. Voyager has improved the "Box" with new scripts, such as the "Switch" script which allows a one-click switch between the environment of Debian 11 and Voyager 11. Other scripts provide ways to modify various Conky options, install GNOME extensions, switch to a PC Tablet mode with one-click screen rotation, Voyager wallpapers, restore options, installation of Wine Staging, among many others. KaOS is a desktop Linux distribution that features the latest version of the KDE desktop environment, the Calligra office suite, and other popular software applications that use the Qt toolkit. The rolling release distribution has introduced a few new packages, some visual changes, and the system installer now copies over network settings to the newly installed system. "Updates to the base of this distribution include Systemd 249.3, Curl 7.78.0, IWD 1.16, NetworkManager 1.32.8, Mesa 21.1.7, Poppler 21.08.0, Vulkan packages 1.2.187, Udisks 2.9.3, MLT 7.0.1, and Openexr 3.1.1. Qt 5.15 does not receive updates or maintenance from the Qt company (only closed source, paid support is available). KDE has stepped up though and published a maintained 5.15 fork. KaOS now does a monthly patch update from this fork for all of Qt 5.15, so it basically is now at 5.15.3. The installer Calamares has the ability added to carry over the network settings from the Live system, so no longer a need to enter the Wifi password again on booting into the newly installed system. There now also is an option to select the preferred filesystem when using the automated partitioning. New applications added include speedtest-cli, mauikit-accounts, and bibletime. Biggest change here is the addition of Plasma Mobile Apps, which are very suitable for desktop use. They include Angelfish (web-browser), Kasts (pocasts), Kalk (calculator), and Koko (image viewer)." IPFire is an independent Linux distribution that focuses on easy setup, good handling and high level of security. The project's latest release features a new kernel, updated hardware support, and install media that is compressed with Zstandard compression for better performance. "This is a major update for IPFire, as it rebases the IPFire kernel on Linux 5.10, the latest long-term supported release of the Linux kernel. Arne has been working through a long spring getting IPFire ported on this release and it is now finally ready for prime-time. It features: Support for many new drivers, improved support and performance for existing drivers making IPFire more compatible with new, and powerful with existing hardware. Most notably are many network drivers as well as virtualised communication with the hypervisor in the cloud. Networking throughput has been increased through zero-copy TCP receive and UDP and Bottleneck Bandwidth and RTT congestion control (BBR). Those changes will also decrease the latency of the firewall in the network when forwarding packets. Wireless will have improved throughput and better latency with Airtime Queue Limits which practically enables use of all the 'Bufferbloat' algorithms on wireless. Support for 64-bit ARM hardware has been massively improved and we were able to drop a large amount of custom patches who have been upstreamed into the Linux kernel." For Btrfs installations, the default subvolume layout has been improved for easier rollbacks and less wasted space on snapshots. Additionally, swapfiles on Btrfs filesystem are now supported. The GNOME edition has received a major rework the update to GNOME 40. The Zorin OS team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution. The project's new release, Zorin OS 16, is available in two editions at the moment: a free edition called Core and a commercial edition called Pro. Lite and Educational editions are planned for a later date. The new release offers a more responsive desktop experience and added a new Zorin Appearance application to make it easier to change the theme, layout, and fonts used by the desktop. "Zorin Appearance allows you to select a different desktop layout, change the app and icon theme, choose your desktop font, and tweak other parts of your desktop to make it truly yours. In Zorin OS 16, we’ve refreshed the app’s layout to make it even easier to find customization options, with the category tabs moved from the top to the left side of the window. Desktop layouts have also been separated into a dedicated tab, and you can now set the size of desktop icons independently from the Files app. We’re introducing an all-new desktop layout in Zorin Appearance which resembles the default interface in Windows 11. It features a modern and streamlined UI that adapts well to computers with touchpads, mice, or touchscreens. The new grid menu, activities overview button, and taskbar icons are placed front and center for easy access and effortless navigation on screens of all sizes." With Debian 11 freshly out of the bag, the next highly-anticipated release will undoubtedly be that of Slackware Linux 15.0, a major update of the world's oldest surviving Linux distribution. Patrick Volkerding has just announced that Slackware's "Current" branch, which has received a long list of updates recently, has "most things frozen" in preparation for the final release: "Along with the usual suspects, I've been trying to clear out the list of things that needed to get done in order to reach the standard of excellence demanded from a Slackware release, and I think we've gotten it pretty close. GCC was bumped to version 11.2.0 (because we just can't send this out 2 versions behind), and everything was verified to build properly or fixed up so that it did. I don't see any benefit to another public mass rebuild, so we're not going to do one. Anyway, without further ado, here is Slackware 15.0 release candidate one. Consider most things frozen and the focus now to be any remaining blocker bugs. We'll more than likely take that next Plasma bug-fix release, but it's soon time to get off this treadmill." See the distribution's changelog for a list of recent changes. Here are the download links to Slackware's unofficial installation DVD and installation mini CD built from Slackware's "Current" tree (MD5): slackware64-current-install-dvd.iso (3,259MB), slackware64-current-mini-install.iso (124MB). |

Debian Edu/Skolelinux is the Debian-edu's "Debian Pure Blend" distribution. It is aiming to provide an out-of-the-box localised environment tailored for schools and universities. The project has published an update in step with Debian 11, bringing new software and features to the Debian Edu distribution. "New version of Debian Installer from Debian 'Bullseye', see its installation manual for more details. New artwork based on the Homeworld theme, the default artwork for Debian 11 'Bullseye'. The Debian Installer doesn't support LTSP chroot setup anymore. In case of a combined server installation ('Main server' + 'LTSP server' profiles), setting up thin client support (now using X2Go) happens at the end of the installation. Generating the SquashFS image for diskless client support (from the server's file system) is done at first boot. For separate LTSP servers, both steps have to be done via a tool after first boot inside the internal network when enough information is available from the main server. Software updates: everything which is new in Debian 11 'Bullseye', eg. Linux kernel 5.10, desktop environments KDE Plasma 5.20, GNOME 3.38, Xfce 4.16, LXDE 11, MATE 1.24, LibreOffice 7.0, educational toolbox GCompris 1.0, music creator Rosegarden 20.12, LTSP 21.01. Debian Bullseye includes more than 59,000 packages available for installation." Further information can be found in the release notes. The Debian project has published a new version of the distribution's Linux-based operating system. Debian 11 (code name "Bullseye") includes over 11,000 additional packages and a number of interesting new features, including driverless document scanning, exFAT filesystem support, and a generic "open" command which can launch default applications from the command line. "The official SANE driverless backend is provided by sane-escl in libsane1. An independently developed driverless backend is sane-airscan. Both backends understand the eSCL protocol but sane-airscan can also use the WSD protocol. Users should consider having both backends on their systems. eSCL and WSD are network protocols. Consequently they will operate over a USB connection if the device is an IPP-over-USB device (see above). Note that libsane1 has ipp-usb as a recommended package. This leads to a suitable device being automatically set up to use a driverless backend driver when it is connected to a USB port. A new open command is available as a convenience alias to xdg-open (by default) or run-mailcap, managed by the update-alternatives(1) system. It is intended for interactive use at the command line, to open files with their default application, which can be a graphical program when available." elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features a custom desktop environment called Pantheon. The project's latest release, elementary OS 6 "Odin", features sandboxed applications via Flatpak bundles, a new dark theme, and multi-touch gestures. "elementary OS 6 leverages cutting-edge sandboxing technology to enforce privacy and security protections at a technical level. In OS 6, all AppCenter apps are now packaged and distributed as Flatpaks, a modern container format that keeps apps siloed away from each other and your sensitive data. Several default elementary OS apps are now being distributed as Flatpaks as well. In addition, elementary OS 6 utilizes Portals to keep you in control of how apps interact with each other and your data. Apps must explicitly request permission in a well-defined way e.g. to get access to files or launch other apps. A new Permissions view in System Settings -> Applications exposes all the permissions apps have requested and gives you control to override or revoke them."
