The openSUSE project has announced the availability of openSUSE 16.0 beta, a development snapshot previewing features coming in the next version of the project's stable Leap branch. Many of the key changes focus on removing legacy packages. "Leap 16.0 with its fresh fork brings a renewed foundation and cleaner system. Expected to be Wayland-only (some X.Org remnants remain for now). SysV init support has been dropped. The new Agama installer is now the default. The traditional YaST stack is retired in favor of: Cockpit for system management; Myrlyn as a drop-in replacement for the YaST Software GUI. (Note: YaST is still available in Tumbleweed but will no longer be developed; YaST has been removed from Leap 16 and Myrlyn takes on this role of software installation like YaST. If someone is interested in the maintenance of YaST for further development and bug fixes, the source are available on GitHub. Leap 16.0 will no longer run on machines that do not support x86_64-v2." Daniel Napora has announced the release of Mabox Linux 25.04, the latest monthly update of the Arch-based Linux distribution with a customised desktop based on the Openbox window manager. The new release presents various improvements to the tint2 panel and the status indicator: "The April ISO image update brings a polished look, as well as important improvements to the default tint2 panel. The new look in the form of a thumbnail and additional functionalities have been given to the Panel Icon, which allows you to change the wallpaper and style of desktop elements. ... But the most important new feature is status indicator with a dynamic menu. In addition to the obvious functionality of notifying about available updates and performing updates, it has two additional modules: discs usage reporting, with a configurable alert level; it also allows you to browse the contents of mounted drives using a dynamic pipemenu. AnduinOS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which provides a GNOME desktop which has been themed and styled to resemble Windows 11. The project's latest release, AnduinOS 1.3.0, is based on Ubuntu 25.04 and ships with GNOME 48. "AnduinOS 1.3 is released. This version is highly recommended [because] we first added an app store (based on Flatpak) in it. Upgraded base system - the foundational system has been updated from Oracular (Ubuntu 24.10) to Plucky (Ubuntu 25.04). Added a new shortcut Super + V to toggle the clipboard history. Pre-installed GNOME Software to support installing software from the software store. Pre-installed Flatpak to support installing software from the software store. Fixed Firefox localization issue. The AlmaLinux project has published a new beta snapshot. The new development release seeks to improve performance and security for the 9.x series. The release announcement states: "AlmaLinux 9.6 Beta continues to enhance performance, development tools, and security. Updated module streams improve support for web applications, while new compiler versions bring optimizations for better performance. The release also delivers updates to elfutils, Valgrind, SystemTap, and PCP improving system debugging and performance monitoring. Networking improvements come with new versions of NetworkManager and iproute. Security updates include new SELinux-policy and SSSD versions. Version 48.0 focuses on improving multimedia support: "The status of the 4MLinux 48.0 series has been changed to STABLE. The OpenBSD team have released OpenBSD 7.7. The project, which places a high priority on secure code and correct documentation, has improved performance in out of memory situations, improved hibernate support, and introduced new userland features: "Various new userland features - numerous changes to make the imsg API stricter and better, which were followed by adapting all applications across the tree. Allow the user to provide an alternative perfpolicy when on battery, extending the semantics of hw.perfpolicy to provide two buttons to specify desired behavior. This gives users more flexibility in setting the performance when AC-powered vs. battery powered. Made calendar(1) use the environment variable RECIPIENT_EMAIL for sending mails to. Made security(8) use GMT rather than the local timezone when checking for changes in device nodes and setuid files. Avoids false positives when changing timezones. Added a new variable PASSWDSKIP that can be set in /etc/daily.local to prevent security(8) from complaining about specific accounts that have no password." The CRUX distribution is a lightweight operating system with software added through a collection of application ports. CRUX 3.8 is the first release in about three years and features upgrades across the system. "CRUX 3.8 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.40, GCC 14.2.0 and Binutils 2.43.1. Kernel: Linux 6.12.23 (LTS). CRUX 3.8 ships with X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 21.1.16. CRUX 3.8 includes Wayland 1.23.1. Ports continue to default to X.Org, but Wayland can easily be installed along and run in either pure Wayland or Xwayland mode. If you decide to run a Wayland session, you will need to enable the 'contrib' collection and rebuild a few ports (for example xorg/mesa) to make it fully available. The ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a DVD or putting on a USB drive. UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi/syslinux available during installation. Because all bootloaders are in our opt collection now, no bootloader is installed as a core port by default. To give the possibility to select a bootloader, we have added a new menu to setup. Important notes: glibc depends on libxcrypt now, we have added libxcrypt to our core repository; latest shadow depends on libbsd or libmd, we have added both to core...." "We are glad to let you know that we've released Edubuntu 25.04 and we've replaced some of our apps that were no longer supported with similar applications so you can still get the same wonderful experience. New features: this release includes GNOME 48; for Qt-based/KDE apps, we now include themes via Kvantum, mostly as a workaround for the inability to change the accent color in those applications; this theme is based on GNOME's libadwaita, on which the default Ubuntu theme (Yaru) is based; GNOME Notes is dead upstream, for that reason, we have switched to the resurrected GNote; likewise, GNOME Dictionary is also dead upstream and we have replaced it with Artha, which is more of a thesaurus but does dictionary operations as well. Rudra Saraswat has announced the release of Ubuntu Unity 25.04, the latest update of this Ubuntu community edition that integrates the Ubuntu base system with the Unity desktop (an interface which was used by all standard Ubuntu releases prior to 2017 when it was dropped in favour of GNOME). The release announcement warns of a last-minute bug that affects computers with a BIOS firmware: "Ubuntu Unity 25.04 'Plucky Puffin' has now been released. A bug affecting Ubuntu Unity, Kubuntu and Lubuntu was discovered a few hours prior to the release wherein manual partitioning installs on BIOS systems result in unbootable installations. As it could not be fixed in time for the release, we recommend that you do not attempt a manual partitioning install if your computer only has a BIOS. Upgrades from Ubuntu Unity 24.10 will usually be enabled within a few weeks of the release, upon which you should receive a notification prompting you to upgrade to 25.04." "The key focus for the team for this cycle has been the conversion of our distribution to a Wayland-based distribution. We have been working closely with our fellow Buddies Of Budgie maintainers. Xfce 4.20 features many bug fixes and minor improvements, modernizing the Xubuntu desktop while maintaining a familiar look and feel. The Lubuntu project has released Lubuntu 25.04, an interim release which will receive nine months of support. The distribution's 25.04 release is one focused on transition and gradual changes as the project moves from Qt 5 to Qt 6 and from X11 to Wayland. "Our biggest point of refresh has been on two fronts, which we've previously laid out in our '24.04 LTS to 26.04 LTS' cycle plans: Port as much software as reasonable from Qt 5 to Qt 6. Get Lubuntu fully prepared for Wayland. Of course, some other items have happened, such as our move to Fancy Menu by default. This being said, Qt 6 porting and Wayland preparation were the primary points of focus. Again on the point of 'stability comes first,' we decided to delay Wayland one last cycle. This is the last time we are delaying this. Thanks to the warm welcome and support from the Mir team, Fedora LXQt, and a handful of other teams, we are proud to announce that Lubuntu 25.10, Questing Quokka, will indeed ship with Miriway as the default Wayland compositor, backed by a deb-based Mir 2.20." The Ubuntu Studio team has announced the release of Ubuntu Studio 25.04 which offers a range of creative and multimedia tools. The project's latest release features the Plasma desktop, version 3.0 of the GNU Image Manipulation Program, Pencil2D, Invada Studio plugins, and PipeWire 1.2.7. "The long-awaited GIMP 3.0 is included by default. GIMP is now capable of non-destructive editing with filters, better Photoshop PSD export, and so very much more. The Kubuntu project has announced the release of Kubuntu 25.04 which features version 6.3 of the Plasma desktop. The release announcement shares the highlights: "The Kubuntu team is happy to announce that Kubuntu 25.04 has been released. To test Wayland, log out and select the Wayland session from the first icon at the top right of the login screen. Keep in mind that the Wayland implementation in these desktop environments is still experimental. LXQt and Xfce, for instance, are using labwc compositor, which means Wayland won't work in VirtualBox. After an absence of a new release since nearly five years ago, the GoboLinux project has sprung to life with a leadership change and a new bug-fix release labelled 017.01. GoboLinux is an independently-developed Linux distribution with and alternative filesystem hierarchy that departs from established UNIX standards and it uses Awesome as its default window manager. From the release notes: "We are pleased to present release 017.01 of GoboLinux, the Linux distribution featuring a rethought file system structure. GoboLinux was created out of a desire to try new approaches in the Linux distribution design space. GoboLinux 017.01 is an eagerly awaited bug-fix update that addresses several critical issues since our initial 017 release. Main changes: include UnionFS-Fuse to work around limitations with the sandbox in the live environment; loopback network interface needs to be brought up at boot; update the search URL used by the Scripts package; Ncurses had been replaced by NcursesW, but some packages' metadata still held references to the former; update expired SSL certificates; fix wrong versioning of SQLite...."
