Oracle Solaris
Solaris is a computer operating system, the proprietary Unix variant developed by Sun Microsystems. Early versions, based on BSD UNIX, were called SunOS. The shift to a System V code base in SunOS 5 was marked by changing the name to Solaris 2. Earlier versions were retroactively named Solaris 1.x. After version 2.6, Sun dropped the "2." from the name. Solaris consists of the SunOS UNIX base operating system plus a graphical user environment. Solaris is written in a platform-independent manner and is available for SPARC and x86 processors (including x86_64). Starting from version 10, the Solaris licence changed and the product was distributed free of charge for any system or purpose, but after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle in 2009, the product is once again proprietary with a restrictive licence.

NEW • Development Release: openSUSE 15.6 RC |

The openSUSE project has entered its release candidate phase for Leap version 15.6. The new release will include a number of new features, such as Cockpit for remote administration. "Users who are eager to install Leap 15.6 on their machines should check the release’s known issues to see if there is any issue that prevents the use of the RC. The release team was able to deliver a long time awaited Cockpit for both Leap and SUSE Package Hub users. Users might be familiar with Cockpit’s web-based admin interface from Leap Micro tutorials. Users are advised not to publicly expose Port 9090 used with the admin interface; just like people shouldn’t expose their router’s web interface to the public. Previous attempts to include Cockpit in Leap 15.5 were made, but there were several blockers. Inclusion was possible thanks to a refresh of the Python 3.11 stack, which was part of massive update effort for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 Service Pack 6 along with unification branding. The team was able to build Cockpit once and provide it for both SLES and Leap users with this RC." Additional details on the new Cockpit feature can be found in openSUSE's release announcement. T2 allows the creation of custom distributions with bleeding-edge technology. The project's latest release, version 24.5, runs on 25 CPU architectures and includes updates to the Linux kernel, GNOME, and KDE Plasma. Garuda Linux is a rolling, desktop distribution based on the Arch Linux operating system. The project's latest release, Garuda Linux 240428, ships with a number of upgrades, the most immediately apparent being the new Plasma 6 desktop: "The main focus of this release is certainly the already mentioned Plasma 6 upgrade which already arrived in the Dr460nized edition. Meanwhile, Sway and Hyprland received some major improvements to their respective editions as well. Also, FireDragon was rebased to Floorp, meaning we now profit from its interesting feature set. Lastly, our build system for the garuda repository received major updates, and the pilot phase for Chaotic-AUR infra 4.0 is supposed to start soon. As KDE 6 was released in February, the Dr460nized edition underwent some minor changes to how we create our desktop layout. Multiple plasmoids needed to be ported to KDE 6, which also caused some of them to be replaced with updated forks (eg. the original Latte dock window - title, appmenu, buttons - are no longer maintained and were ported or forked by other people)." Additional information is provided in the release announcement. Steve Revill has announced the release of RISC OS 5.30, the latest stable version of the independently-developed computer operating system originally designed by Acorn Computers Ltd in 1987. It is available for some of the popular ARM computer boards, such as Beagleboard, IOMD, Iyonix, OMAP5, Pandaboard, Raspberry Pi and Titanium. "We are proud to announce RISC OS 5.30 is now available for the seven platforms that met or exceeded benchmark. The gestation time has allowed a bumper crop of 347 improvements to the 'HardDisc4' image and applications, and for the main operating system 'ROM' image around 329 improvements, the exact figure depends on which hardware you have. For the first time, the OMAP5, most commonly used with the IGEPv5 hardware design, has switched to a stable release after resolving a previously blocking issue with its video driver. For many new users the low-cost Raspberry Pi computer is their first inroad into using RISC OS. The ready made SD card image has been refreshed to include: Ovation Pro desktop publishing application; out-of-the-box WiFi support for those models which have the chip on board; the full read/write edition of SparkFS, now integrated into the standard distribution across all platforms...." Continue to the release announcement for further details. Images of the operating system for supported devices can be found on the project's download page; here is a quick link to the compressed Raspberry Pi image: RISCOSPi.5.30.zip (157MB). |

Lubuntu is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features the LXQt desktop environment. The project's latest release re-introduces an OEM install option, features a new installer prompt, and provides three install modes: Full, Normal, and Minimal. Minimal provides just a desktop environment with bare essentials, no web browser, and no Snap software. "Traditionally, installing Lubuntu only provides a regular installation mode (a single option for installs). This changes with Lubuntu 24.04, where you can now pick between Normal, Full, and Minimal. A Normal installation gives you a traditional Lubuntu experience. The Minimal mode ships with just the desktop environment and essential components (no web browser or snapd). A Full installation is the same as Normal, but comes with several recommended third-party apps: Virtual Machine Manager, Element, Thunderbird, Krita. The release announcement shares the highlights: "Fedora Workstation Edition features the GNOME desktop environment, now updated to version 46. Check out What's New in Fedora Workstation 40? for the highlights! The KDE Spin now includes KDE Plasma 6, and runs with Wayland out of the box. Read more about that and other KDE Spin updates at What's New in Fedora KDE 40? We're also officially reviving the “Fedora Atomic Desktop” brand for all of our variants which use ostree or image-based provisioning. Our technology isn't really 'immutable', so this provides a better grouping. Read more about this at Introducing Fedora Atomic Desktops - but in short, Fedora Silverblue and Fedora Kinoite will remain, while the other desktop variants will become Fedora Sway Atomic and Fedora Budgie Atomic." NEW • BSD Release: NetBSD 9.4 |

The developers of the highly portable NetBSD operating system have announced the release of an update to their NetBSD 9.x branch. The new NetBSD 9.4 release mostly contains bug fixes and minor upgrades. The project has also issued a warning about the 9.4 release containing an out of date version of OpenSSL for compatibility purposes: "NetBSD 9.4 contains various improvements pulled up from the current branch to the netbsd-9 stable branch since NetBSD 9.3 was cut on August 4, 2022. NetBSD 9.4 is primarily a bug and security fix release, however, there are some new features, such as support for more MegaRAID controllers, ZTE MF112 and D-Link DWM222 USB 3G modems, and improved CPU feature detection for newer AMD/Intel devices. All users of netbsd-9 should upgrade if they are not following the stable branch. Important: the version of OpenSSL included with NetBSD 9.x is now unsupported unless a support contract is purchased from OpenSSL, and cannot be upgraded without breaking the ABI compatibility we’ve promised for the netbsd-9 branch. Users are recommended to update to NetBSD 10 or use OpenSSL from pkgsrc." The release announcement offers additional information. Download (MD5, pkglist): NetBSD-9.4-amd64.iso (495MB, torrent). |

Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux MXE-23.2, a bug-fix update of the project's earlier release. AVLinux is based on Debian 12 and MX Linux, it is designed primarily for content creators, and it uses Enlightenment as the default desktop user interface. "This is an ISO image update to AV Linux MX edition that addresses a few annoying and potentially show-stopping bugs that appeared in the first release of AVL-MXe 23.1. Obviously the jump to a new Debian platform ('Bookworm'), a completely new desktop environment (Enlightenment) and a whole new way of handling system audio(PipeWire) was bound to scare a few new bugs out of the woodwork and boy did it ever. Hopefully this ISO will help people get off to a better start with these various new features. Don't fade backlight is now set by default which should fix Enlightenment setting the backlight to 0 which was making the lightDM login screen invisible after installing AVL-MXe to hard disk and booting it with its default of SysVInit (systemd boot recommended). A shortcut to change the keyboard layout for Enlightenment to use is now easily found on the main panel." Read the rest of the release announcement for further information and screenshots.
