Eric Turgeon has announced the release of GhostBSD 21.04.27, the latest version of the project's desktop operating system based on FreeBSD, with MATE as the default desktop. This release updates the base system to FreeBSD 13.0: "I am happy to announce the availability of the new ISO image, 21.04.27. When we started to port all the GhostBSD code from 12.2-STABLE to 13.0-STABLE, several problems arose with OpenRC, devd and drivers not loading at boot. We discovered that OpenRC devd and devmatch services implementations were not working properly. We had to create rc.devmatch to replace the OpenRC service implementation of devmatch.conf for devd. With devmatch now starting properly, all drivers get loaded at boot and when a new device is inserted. In addition, we were able to remove all changes we made in the GENERIC kernel, making the default kernel a bit smaller. I fixed ntpd and WireGuard services. Automatic configuration for network cards has been removed from NetworkMgr and added to the script started by devd." KaOS is a rolling release distribution which is focused on providing one polished desktop (KDE Plasma) on one CPU architecture (x86_64). The distribution has published a new snapshot, 2021.04, which revamps the KaOS Community Packages utility (kcp). The Calamares system installer has been updated along with some changes to the distribution's package mirrors: "The installer Calamares has picked up the transition to QML again. All navigation is now done in QML for KaOS. The Finished module was also ported to QML, this gives a simpler end page, with clear buttons showing two options. It also opened the way to give users a clear message regarding installation logs once the install is completed. Usersq is another module being ported to QML, a preview is included in this release, but is not the default users module yet. The default mirror used for all KaOS installs is provided by Fosshost. Big change with Fosshost is that with just one mirror users will have access to a worldwide network of mirrors through Fastly CDN. No longer is there a need to adjust a mirrorlist, you will always be connected to the fastest mirror in your area. As always with this rolling distribution, you will find the very latest packages for the Plasma Desktop, this includes Frameworks 5.81.0, Plasma 5.21.3, and KDE Applications 21.04.0. All built on Qt 5.15.2+." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): KaOS-2021.04-x86_64.iso (2,507MB, pkglist). |

Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 34, the latest version of the popular Linux distribution sponsored by Red Hat: "I'm excited to share the results of the hard work of thousands of contributors to the Fedora Project: our latest release, Fedora Linux 34, is here." As usual, Fedora ships in several editions and spins, available for the x86_64 and AArch64 architectures. The "Workstation" variant now comes with GNOME 40: "Fedora editions are targeted outputs geared toward specific 'showcase' uses on the desktop, in server and cloud environments, and the Internet of Things. Fedora Workstation focuses on the desktop, and in particular, it's geared toward software developers who want a 'just works' Linux operating system experience. This release features GNOME 40, the next step in focused, distraction-free computing. GNOME 40 brings improvements to navigation whether you use a trackpad, a keyboard, or a mouse. The app grid and settings have been redesigned to make interaction more intuitive. You can read more about what changed and why in a Fedora Magazine article from March." The Ubuntu Studio team have announced the release of version 21.04 of their multimedia-focused distribution. The project's latest release will be supported through to January 2022 and includes several updated utilities: "This release includes Plasma 5.21.4, the full-featured desktop environment made by KDE. It uses the Materia theme and the icons are Papirus icons. Studio Controls has seen further development as its own independent project and has been updated to version 2.1.4. Ardour 6.6+ (a future 6.7 snapshot). Ardour has been updated to version 6.6+, meaning this is a git snapshot of what will eventually be Ardour 6.7. This had to be done because Ardour 6.5 started to fail to build with a newer library introduced into the Ubuntu archives, and could only be resolved with this snapshot. We hope to have Ardour 6.7 in via official updates once released. Agordejo is new to Ubuntu Studio this release. Canonical has released Ubuntu 21.04 which carries the code name "Hirsute Hippo". The distribution's new version ships with GNOME running on a Wayland session as the default desktop and includes the built-in ability to join Active Directory domains. "Ubuntu machines can join an Active Directory (AD) domain at installation for central configuration. Univention Corporate Server is an enterprise-class distribution based on Debian. It features an integrated management system for central administration of servers. The distribution's latest release is Univention Corporate Server 4.4-8 which improves the performance of the distribution's web-based services and paves the way for a smooth upgrade from the 4.4 series to 5.0. "The performance of the UMC web server in large environments where there are many requests has improved. For this purpose, the UMC web server has changed from single to multi-processing. Thus, it can no longer run in one process only, but in several processes, to actively use several CPU cores, at the same time. The number of processes used is configurable and should not exceed the available CPU cores. In particular, large UCS environments with many login requests in a short period benefit from this change. Bryan Poerwo has announced the release of a new version of EndeavourOS, a rolling-release Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It aims to be an easy-to-install and pre-configured system featuring Xfce as the default desktop environment. From the release announcement: "We are proud to announce our second release of 2021 and this one is a bit more than a refresh ISO image release, so before you hit the download button and go play with it, just sit back and let us inform you first because we are really excited about this release. We already covered our websites receiving a new look but in this case, I want to put the spotlight on our wiki. Our Discovery magazine has been discontinued due to a lack of writers and it now has been rebooted as the EndeavourOS knowledge base for both x86_64 and ARM. The Zorin OS project has released a development snapshot of its desktop distribution. Zorin OS 16 Beta includes a new desktop look, performance improvements, and a wide range of software made available through Flatpak and Snap. "You’ll notice that even more apps are available to install from the Software store in Zorin OS 16 than ever before. This is thanks to the addition of the Flathub repository to Zorin OS out of the box. Flathub is the de-facto standard repository from where to get apps using the Flatpak package format. It has flourished into a huge ecosystem of apps and games from many independent developers, as well as software directly from big names like Spotify, Zoom, and Mojang. Now Zorin OS comes pre-loaded with the app catalogs of Flathub, the Snap store, and the Ubuntu and Zorin OS APT repositories, as well as the capability to install .deb and AppImage packages and Windows apps (optionally using WINE). Thanks to this, Zorin OS 16 has the largest library of apps available out-of-the-box of any Open Source desktop ever." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. Barry Kauler has announced the release of EasyOS 2.7, a new version of the project's minimalist (and experimental) Linux distribution with roots in Puppy Linux. This version is part of the "Dunfell" series, compiled from the source code of a port of the OpenEmbedded project. From the release announcement: "EasyOS 'Dunfell' version 2.7 has the driver's seat and is the flagship release. Almost all of the packages are compiled in OpenEmbedded, with the exception of a few large and difficult-to-cross-compile packages, such as LibreOffice and SeaMonkey - these were compiled in the running EasyOS 2.7 pre-release. LibreOffice and SeaMonkey are the latest versions, 7.1.2 and 2.53.7. Network management has been enhanced with ModemManager, which NetworkManager Applet and ModemManage GUI are frontends for. NetworkManager Applet is an icon in the systray and ModemManager GUI is in the 'Network' menu. The Linux kernel is 5.10.26. There have been some significant bug fixes since the previous release of EasyOS, including faster startup of a Linux distribution desktop in a container (without wallpaper corruption), Osmo stability, and the X.Org Wizard previously causing X not to start." Patrick Volkerding has announced that the development branch of Slackware Linux (known as "Current") has now reached "beta" status: "I'm going to go ahead and call this a beta even though there's still no fix for the illegal instruction issue with 32-bit MariaDB. But there should be soon. No build regressions noted with the official GCC 10.3 release. Please report any new (or old) issues on the LQ Slackware forum. Enjoy!" The latest entries in the changelog indicate various updates, including an upgrade to Linux kernel 5.10.29 (default; a newer 5.11.13 kernel is available in the "testing" repository) and GCC 10.3.0. It also lists a couple of security fixes to dnsmasq and irssi. All KDE packages have been recently upgraded, so KDE Plasma is now at version 5.21.4 and KDE Applications at 5.81.0. Thunderbird has also undergone an upgrade due to recent security issues. As always, Slackware does not provide any official testing images, but users interested in installing and testing the distribution are welcome to download Eric Hameleers' unofficial installation DVD or installation mini CD (built from Slackware's "Current" tree and updated daily): slackware64-current-install-dvd.iso (3,166MB, MD5), slackware64-current-mini-install.iso (121MB).
