Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 15.0, the new stable release of the project's desktop-oriented distribution designed for home use and based on Slackware Linux, but with a number of interesting modifications. It features the lightweight IceWM window manager with a custom control centre, adds the latest LibreOffice, updates the Firefox browser to the latest stable version and includes other popular applications such as Google Chrome or Google Earth. Unlike Slackware, Absolute Linux is developed for 64-bit processors only. "Absolute Linux 15.0 released. Six years from 14.2, version 15 of Slackware arrived a couple days ago. Still rock-solid. Still without systemd. Still crazy after all these years. I'm giddy. I still love the approach Slackware takes toward a solid, bare-bones system. I like to dress it up just enough to make it quickly productive and up-to-date for myself. I will keep the 'rolling update' going with the roughly monthly snapshots; the next release of Slackware might be a while." Visit the distribution's home page to read the brief release announcement. Paul Sherman has announced the availability of the initial beta build of Absolute Linux 15.0, a major update of the project's Slackware-based distribution featuring the IceWM window manager. This version drops support for the x86 processors and introduces the Kodi media player application: "Absolute 15.0 beta 1 released, based on Slackware64-current. Releasing as beta, giving the opportunity to get extra testing and feedback prior to final. Also to help mitigate the current Meltdown and Spectre security problems, of which the current Slackware kernel (4.14.12) takes care of 2 out of 3 vulnerabilities. Other changes: PaleMoon is the default browser, but is Firefox also installed (if PaleMoons default page search gives you problems, just go to the search page you want, then drag and drop the page icon onto the homepage button); Python 3 (and wxpython/GTK+ 3) and Qt 5 are included, as well as Python 2.7 and Qt 4; includes Kodi home theater 17.6; most everything recompiled." Here is the brief release announcement. Download (MD5) the installation DVD image from SourceForge: absolute64-15.0b1.iso (1,960MB, pkglist). |

Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 14.2, a new version of the project's Slackware-based distribution featuring the lightweight IceWM window manager as the default desktop user interface: "Absolute Linux 14.2 released, based on Slackware 14.2. It comes in a 32-bit and a 64-bit variants. Same basic functionality, but most everything updated under the hood. No longer fits on a single CD - the usual installation method is a USB stick. With this size-constraint removed, larger applications like LibreOffice and Calibre are now included in the base installation. Both installers have an 'Autoinstall' option, which partitions and formats your drive. The 64-bit edition will make GPT partitions if you are booting EFI. But just as with Slackware, you need to turn off Secure Boot in the BIOS if it is set. The applications and development libraries are more extensive than previous releases." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 14.12. Absolute Linux is a Slackware-based distribution featuring the lightweight IceWM window manager as the default desktop. This release is based on Slackware's latest development tree: "Absolute 14.12 released. This release is based upon Slackware Current (prior to 14.2 release). Many of the same applications and features, but recompiled nearly everything due to newer libraries (especially the PNG libraries). Python 3, and GTK+ 3 transitions have begun, I suppose, as both are now available. Extra support packages will be needed by applications that do use them." This version is built on top of Linux kernel 4.1.6. Some other notable updates in the changelog include: "AbiWord 3.0.1, MESA 11.0.0, glibc 2.22, IceWM 1.3.7.2, PulseAudio 6.0, GCC 4.9.3...." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 14.10, a new version of the project's lightweight desktop distribution based on Slackware Linux 14.1 (with updates from Slackware's "Current" tree) and featuring the IceWM window manager: "Absolute 14.10 released. This is a 'first' release based upon Slackware Linux 14.1 It has been a long road back, but here it is. Everythibng has caught up to Slackware (x86), up to and including a recompile with patch for the latest glibc security patch of 20140826. Even have PulseAudio working to keep the Skypers happy. The base install still fits easily onto a CD. If you want to burn a DVD or, more likely, plop the ISO image onto a USB stick, there is also a 'large' version of the ISO image, which includes LibreOffice, the kernel source, Calibre, Inkscape, Skype, Artha dictionary and thesaurus and several developer tools." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 14.0, a major new version of the project's lightweight desktop distribution based on Slackware Linux and featuring the IceWM window manager: "Absolute Linux 14.0 released. Coincides with the Slackware 14.0 release, keeping in step with libraries, toolchain and basic applications. Absolute has moved away from udisks to use the lighter SpaceFM file manager, which takes advantage of native kernel polling. So as always, Absolute will run fast on modest hardware. NetworkManager is taking care of Internet connections by default. Java and multimedia add-ons need to be installed (via system tools, as root) post-installation. Chrome browser is now the default (taking the place of chromium and/or Firefox). I distribute the browser with several plugins and the Chrome browser comes with a more up-to-date Flash release than what is available as a generic plugin for Linux machines." You'll notice edits to .initrc, .bashrc .bash_logout as well as the start-up file for IceWM reflecting the changes." The latest version of Absolute Linux, a lightweight Slackware-based distribution with IceWM, comes with Google Chrome as the default web browser and a number of security fixes: "Absolute Linux 13.1.2 released. Google Chrome replaces Mozilla Firefox as default browser. Lower memory usage, faster rendering and proper URL parsing all contributed to this decision. Firefox package is still up to date and in CD2 directory of repos under /internet. Also several security-related updates as well as multimedia installer update (needed updated URL) Also updated rox-archiver to handle DEB files (to unpack, not install). Note that Google Chrome is a native Absolute build with blacklisting of Gecko Media Player plugin removed. This means that the plugin works. It was blacklisted by Google coders due to crashing complaints, but I have tested it extensively and have not experienced these issues, so I'm watching videos." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 13.1.1, a lightweight Slackware-based distribution with IceWM: "Absolute 13.1.1 released. New kernel and a boatload of updates from Slackware. Almost replaced Firefox with Google Chrome (which I really like) but due to an endless 'upload' bug that keeps crashing Chrome when you try to upload a file, it'll be in the CD2 directory for testing/playing. The 13.1.0 release was a naming snafu as it pre-dated Slackware's update. This release (13.1.1) incorporates Slackware 13.1 as well as several re-compiled packages on Absolute and a couple of scripting changes. Some add-ons in the CD2 directory of the FTP sites (Google Chrome and Picasa for example), gmail-notify added and incorporated into email notification setup as an option. Add/Remove programs (PERL script) updated." There is a brief release announcement on the project's home page and slightly more detailed one in the forum. Download (MD5): absolute-13.1.1.iso (700MB).

Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 13.0.8, a lightweight, Slackware-based desktop distribution featuring the IceWM window manager and solid multimedia playback support: "Absolute Linux 13.0.8 released. Multimedia installer fix. Only a few packages changed, but the multimedia installer was not properly updated and this could lead to some confusion and lack of functionality for users who chose to install the media enhancements. Kernel bump - version 2.6.32.7 and all January Slackware updates. Lots of updates to synchronize with Slackware -current and some multimedia scripts updated to keep pace with new kernel device nomenclature. It turned out a lot less painful than expected. Brasero (CD burning) is back, DVDStyler added. Aside from kernel, a lot of multimedia capabilities were updated and tweaked." Visit the project's home page to read the brief release announcement. Monthly minor release cycle? Primarily security updates (kernel, GIMP, Firefox, BIND, etc.). Also removed Brasero (CD burning) as it is too dependent upon GNOME and switched to a simpler Xfburn. It has a few Xfce-related dependencies but these are small and they also allow easier development for users if they want to use the libraries. You may also notice that wxGTK libraries are in the base install, used by the CHM help viewer and also support Audacity, now compiled and sitting on CD2 in the multimedia folder." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 13.0.2, a new update of the lightweight distribution based on Slackware Linux: "Absolute Linux 13.0.2 released. GTK+ themes engines included along with customized theme changing utility (gtk-chtheme) that calls script that changes IceWM theme, PCMan File Manager desktop background and ROX-Filer background. Makes our lightweight interface more cohesive, but if any setting should fail it does so silently so you can hack away changing stuff and it will not mess up your system. Brasero has replaced K3b. KDE libraries, KDE Multimedia and Arts have all been removed. If you want KDE, you can safely drop in the entire Slackware KDE packages, but for the UI-stay-out-of-my-way types, we've eliminated more overhead. Updates include: Firefox, SeaMonkey, Flash plugin, IceWM and a number of scripts in the a/etc package." Here is the full release announcement. Download (MD5): absolute-13.0.2.iso (685MB).

Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 13.0, a Slackware-based lightweight distribution using the IceWM window manager: "Absolute 13.0 released. During the large number of changes from 12.x to 13 lots of things were broken as I kept up with Slackware and pounded out customizations for IceWM and PCMan File Manager and scripted helper utilities. Focus since end of July, however, has been on making everything work. I managed to get all quirks and bugs out. PCMan File Manager crashes were isolated to thumbnail image use, so that option has been eliminated and integration between ROX and PCMan File Manager has been increased (quick thumbnails and resizing, among other handy features). K3b (Qt 4 version) now closes multi-session disks properly. AbiWord prints without crashing. A log of applications now fit on the CD using the new TXZ packaging; OpenOffice.org is the most noteworthy base install inclusion." Pre-release that includes fixes for slapt-get and wicd, addition of a control panel, centralizing control and eliminating the sometimes confusing utilities menus. Big updates to Midori and Inkscape on repositories (under /CD2). New theme, new log on, Qt 4 up and running, several new applications along with Qt 4-based K3b. Overall a more cohesive look and simpler navigation. Wanted a release candidate so that 13.0 will not necessitate updates -- also wanted to have feedback on whether Midori is functional enough to become the default browser. Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 12.2.2, a lightweight desktop distribution with IceWM, based on Slackware Linux: "Absolute Linux 12.2.2 released. This release brings kernel 2.6.28.7, auto-install defaults to ext4 file system. (Regular install allows for ext3 and ReiserFS as well.) The kernel, for now, is the Slackware 'hugesmp', so it is Slackware 'stock'. Waiting for feedback to see if users like this or would rather get specific configuration tweaked. The large number of changes along with imminent bump in X.Org led me to go with the flow for now in order to allow easier input from Slackware-compatible repositories. In addition to the new kernel there was a very large number of applications, as well as library updates -- so installing via GSlapt is not advised." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 12.0.4, a light-weight, Slackware-based desktop Linux distribution: "Pardon the rapid-fire release, but the kernel source was misconfigured and the kernel size was too large for older PCs. Also, the source code for ROX was altered for nice interface additions, NTFS read-write was implemented, and K3b now works for user accounts without any extra configuration." Some other interesting items from the changelog: "Updated IceWM, added background color change menu item to 'Settings'; added mime-type to ROX to handle .mp4 audio files (m4a and friends) with Audacious, if not encrypted they will play; updated AbScreen; added nvidia-settings to main menu." Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 12.0, a light-weight variant of Slackware Linux using the IceWM window manager: "This is Slackware 12.0 modification. Features kernel 2.6.21.5 (smp) and implements auto-mounting capabilities for devices and media. Updates to Hal and DevTray installation since last release. 586 is NOT supported for now, so don't try to load on a Pentium I or a k6-2 processor. Devices are not actually mounted automatically -- their icons appear in a panel BELOW the taskbar. When you want to look, click the arrow on the right of the taskbar, that bar will slide off to the right, and the devices listed by DevTray appear on the lower panel." Paul Sherman has announced the third beta release of Absolute Linux 11.1, a light-weight modification of Slackware with IceWM window manager and custom configuration utilities: "11.1b3 has been released. Many changes, most small, but some of real importance. Kernel masquerades as 'hugesmp', but it is a recompiled 'genericsmp' with several file systems built in (ReiserFS, ext3, NTFS, VFAT, ISO9660, UDF and USB mass storage). This kernel configuration was chosen to lighten things up, but still make swapping devices as simple as possible. No patches were made to the kernel. Several bug fixes and loads of recompiling; SQLite, pysqlite, K3b and many, many more. Some scripts were updated, including the alsaconf sound setup utility...."
